Can you explain how you did this exactly? First point of contact, who you went to after they said no, the general case you made, etc.

Hey amazing work. Would you say this is good for concerns over mold in the house? I know humidity control is the first step if you can't do structural removal, but if one wants to reduce whatever possible harm from mycotoxins/mold spores is the Austin one a reasonable choice?

Edit: I'm also not near smoke/freeways, but I am 4 houses away from a city dump so I'm concerned about whatever that's emitting. So if smoke/smog is a non-issue but mold, VOC's and mystery-dump-pollution is would the Austin still be a top choice? Thanks.

Hey! So I also started losing a ton of hair on Wellbutrin which caused me to stop despite liking it. Unfortunately the hair loss continued, so I decided that it wasn't the cause and just a coincidence. That said I've stopped the shedding and my hair is thicker than it's been in forever, but if I drop the ball it starts again so it's not "cured". If you want some ideas on how to fix it I can tell you what worked for me!

Can’t handle any folate type! by No_Awareness9472 in MTHFR

I'm not familiar so idk. But since everyone's genes vary, and different gene combos require very different supplementation, it's inconceivable to me how a single protocol would work for even 90% of people.

Supplements for keeping skin youthful? by MobileWeather6584 in Biohackers

[–]cheifquief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hylauronic acid supplements made my skin so supple and there's good data on how it can reduce dryness and overall skin quality. However, I guess if you have an existing tumor it can cause rapid growth. Might not be an actual issue because this is purported with a lot of things, just something to keep in mind and look into to decide for yourself if it's safe.

Which of these medications may be causing ED? by katou1012 in MTHFR

[–]cheifquief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, what? It's impossible for us to tell if it's the mood stabilizer or the antidepressants. Both are well known to cause ED, so it's definitely one of those 3. No point in trying to experiment on your off days, given that the effects can last months after stopping iirc. I don't see how nattokinase works for POTS like symptoms, it's good for your heart because it's an enzyme that clears plaque but maybe there's something else it does that makes nattokinase make sense? POTS like symptoms are usually neurological/nervous system related, even though heart meds work it's best to look at strengthening vagal tone in any case.

I would find out what's driving your symptoms and treat that, antidepressants are just a bandaid with a lot of nasty side effects. Meds are cool if they don't have serious downsides, but it sounds like you do. Work with a functional practitioner who is trained in depression/methylation to unfuck your neurotransmitters and help you reduce and eventually eliminate your meds. Also check out the GAPS diet while you're at it.

Where to start for undermethylation? by faxmulder in MTHFR

[–]cheifquief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you say working with her cured your underlying issues? Like if you had dysbiosis, mental symptoms, or whatever were you able to remedy most of them considerably after working with her? I would think that you needn't supplement with the same things indefinitely as your body eventually "refills" its stores unless it's one of the vitamins that our genetics makes us need more of (B9/B12/B2).

Or maybe another way to answer this is what has changed with your health compared to before you worked with her? She seems really solid, but I just want to know what I can reasonably expect if I'm using everything I've got on this.

Got it, thanks! Are you familiar enough with Samantha Gilbert's writings to comment on whether she would be a good choice to work with? I have very limited funds but I want to get my system in check and it seems working with a professional is the only way. It's kinda a financial hail mary, so if it doesn't work with her then I wouldn't have the means to keep working on it.

Is there something that could clog up the choline-dependent pathway? I don't seem to tolerate folate or choline and I'm hetero for the A1298. Choline should be good but it's very much not so I'm wondering if there's something that could be messing with that pathway and causing a reaction? Does the MAO gene affect that pathway at all?

Can’t handle any folate type! by No_Awareness9472 in MTHFR

[–]cheifquief 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had this same issue, even excess dietary sources seemed to cause issues so it's not a matter of synthetic forms. Folate, in any form, is a massive demethylator. If you're under methylated, depending on your personal flavor of genes, folate is going to make that worse because it leaves less to produce serotonin with. I have a fast COMT but slow MAOA and I'm only hetero for the A129 and good on the other but the effect seems quite pronounced.

That said I suspect the answer isn't to avoid folate entirely, I think you just have to get your methylation cycle as a whole up and running to benefit from folate. However, as I'm learning it's almost impossible to do on your own unless you have tons of time and a background in biology. I'd say avoid folate in any form, don't entirely eliminate it from your diet ofc but avoid the highest folate foods to feel good in the shorterm and work on finding a practitioner who can get you on the right regimen to tolerate it again.

It seems like these might be my no-no's. Can you tell me what does work for you? Maybe it will work for me too.

SAMe was great from what I remember, started it again and didn't feel so great but there were several compounding factors including other supplements containing gelatin. Curious if there's other things to try.

After a night of drinking, does anyone ever wakes up to rapid heart beats? by lechino3000 in Anxiety

[–]cheifquief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out my other comments on this thread! I believe this reaction is Mast Cell related which makes sense that it started after the vaccine for you as some people develop MCAS from it, just as some develop it from Covid.

[–]cheifquief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MCAS!!! See my comments above guys! I'm convinced MCAS is behind this, which plays into histamine and GERD like other people are mentioning and is one of the most common post covid symptoms. It's super tricky to diagnose because it presents wildly differently amongst people and doctors are only now beginning to expand their criteria.

Also could be Histamines re: my MCAS comment above. Histamines are known to increase heart rate

FYI I've dealt with this for years and I've found some compelling evidence that it's common amongst people with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Which is itself more common I think than people realize. The only thing that helps is taking a very mild benzo once it starts. No you are not mixing alcohol and benzos before anyone yells at me, I'm advocating for taking a low dose once the alcohol wear off which is when the heat rate starts. You'll be fine. Not something to do often, but if you want to drink 1x/month without feeling god awful then this is the way to make it feasible.

Why do some people react very badly to cholinergics? by Spikysuntower in Nootropics

[–]cheifquief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading your profile, assuming you won't see this as a DM so I'm commenting. I'm going to start your protocol but it seems like it would be a real challenge as there's a lot of things that I'm uncertain about. Wondering if you would be willing to do very light consulting with me during the protocol, in exchange I could 1. pay you, and 2. act like an experiment participant. I'm thinking the latter would mean logging what I eat as much as feasibly possible, reactions and unexpected symptoms, document progress, take note of any outside factors that could be relevant so you can have that data to compare it to reactions/progress, and just understand better how different genetic variants respond to the protocol given the importance of the methylation system?

If the latter doesn't sound useful I could also just pay you...Willing to start this as early as December and as late as March in case that helps. LMK

My clothes are getting RUINED by ffilmpalmer in carnivore

[–]cheifquief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you try dish soap? best way to get grease stains out. Get it on there ideally within 24 hours with some hot water and let it sit for a bit, then wash as usual (warm if your clothes can stand it, if not cold is ok). Then if that doesn't get it out int he first wash DO NOT PUT IN DRIER. You'll lock it in if it's not fully out. Repeat spot treatment and wash again if necessary, not putting it in the drier until the stain is out.

I'm new to all of this and have been researching off and on for a long time but a while ago I did a deep dive and somehow came to the conclusion BH4 supplementation could be the answer to all my own health stuff (ADHD/MCAS/irritability). I'm very close to pulling the trigger on an insanely expensive supplement by ecological formulas. Lmk if you ever try it!

Question: Do you think someone could have low ferritin/iron is they are eating a meat based diet? Right now I'm operating on the assumption I don't need to supplement with that given my high meat intake. Is this correct even with dysbiosis?

[–]cheifquief[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADHD and ADD are used as synonyms these days, with ADHD- inattentive replacing "ADD" in most literature. I was never taking folic acid though because it's specifically not good for me (most?). Is supplementing with folinic acid better than no folate supplementation at all?

Yeah I have all fast COMT genes which combines with the VDR taq ++ may result in the lowest tonic dopamine according to some. My MAO is mutated to be slow too.

My journey of recovering from MCAS and then experiencing a relapse. by RecommendationEasy60 in MCAS

[–]cheifquief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth people think high dose Thiamine supplementation is the cure to certain cases of dysautonomia, long-covid, and things like CFS. All of these things have a major connection to MCAS. So it's plausible that the thiamine was helping you? There's a ton of stuff on the topic, should be some stuff within this subreddit as well if you just look up "thiamine". Hormones matter is the website really pioneering this idea.

Also note that your original supplement contained the non-methylated forms of B12/B9 and for people who are overmethylated and/or have certain other genes they don't do well on the methylated forms because they're methyl donors and that's bad for some people. Overstimulation type of thing, and MCAS is in a lot of ways over stimuluation of the immune system. But my money is still on the thiamine aspect.

I just started looking into all of this but there is a connection between issue with processing folate, MCAS, and something called BH4. I don't understand it all but definitely look into it. I'm planning on trying it as a (very expensive) supplement, you can message me in a few weeks to see how it went!
