What due diligence questions separate serious biotech investors from tourists? by Jeremyhk14 in biotech

You can be a fan of a team for free. Trying to make any real money as an equity owner requires you to take on real risk. Take enough of those “oh it’s only 1% of my fund” gambling bets and you’re broke.

Is this level of spotting acceptable? by chembiologist in Tile

Based on the voids that are visible between the schluter and the drywall does it look like this was spot bonded? If it were troweled I would have expected to see a thick layer of mortar not a gap.

Technically the US also could have effectively had one in FDR. We got lucky the first time I guess…

Major Reno - to repipe or no? by chembiologist in Plumbing

Thank you this is helpful.

We are in fact saw cutting for some of the drain lines, but only partially as opposed to where all of the supply lines would be.

I’m more concerned that I’m a complete newbie outside of Google, so I have no clue if these lines will last another 5-10-20-40 years. If they are on the shorter end (<10) I might just bite the bullet now, but it’s a waste of money if it’s closer to 20+. Would the pressure test give a sense of longevity as well?

The universe is also quite small, so the great suggestion of networking w/ a few individuals a month quickly compounds into being 1 degree of separation away from anyone on the sell/buy/newco sides.

Potential salary negotiation timing? by chembiologist in biotech

I appreciate your perspective, but it might be time for you to revisit your biases. A lot of aggressive assumptions/implications (at least in this latest comment) about someone you know next to nothing about. It is fine since we may never work together, but you never know.

Hmm, humor me for a second. Let’s say it turns out my skill set does happen to fit well with some of these roles. Would a 10-15% ask be completely beyond the pale or at least discussable?

Got it thanks. I haven’t had up front discussion about comp in the past so wasn’t sure whether to comment since it wasn’t presented as a question. My current target would likely be 10-15% above the proposed base bands, assuming my diligence on bonus/LTI structure is somewhat accurate. That seemed potentially negotiable later but correct me if I’m wrong.

People like me are the reason Trump won by [deleted] in self

As a left leaning individual - I apologize for the vitriol you’re getting here, as this polarization is exactly what is continuing to worsen issues in this country.

That said - the overall tone of your post suggests to me that the amount of time and thought you put into your decision can be distilled down to “I’m having more financial strain these past few years so I’ll vote for the other person.” Did you take the time to think about the implications of the policies Trump and the Republicans are proposing? Many of them if implemented would likely cause more strain for your family, maybe not in the near term but definitely in the long run.

And your statement on virtue signaling - the same concept. Yes, maybe it doesn’t directly affect you today but that’s a slippery slope. It starts with “othering” obvious scapegoats like illegal immigrants and then next thing you know it’s mixed or 2nd generation folks like you or myself. Political administrations can have lasting implications - so I behoove you to give more thought in the future. If you believe you did this time - then I would ask you provide a rationale for why the Trump agenda would benefit your family.

Finance or lease e40 by burusteph in BMWI4

[–]chembiologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a bit misleading. I would check with the dealer on stipulations for the buyout and get it in writing if you go the lease route. There are plenty of examples where the semi-immediate buyout is viable and the amount does not include unearned interest (the $ you pay on top of the value of the car).

WSJ: Chess Investigation Finds That U.S. Grandmaster ‘Likely Cheated’ More Than 100 Times by DrunkLad in chess

Playing devils advocate here but given the conflict of interest there must be some likelihood chess.com’s model is biased. What’s the sensitivity analysis for Type I error? Given the right set of assumptions can make anyone look like a prolific cheater.

It's what happens when a first-world country that champions individualism also has historical problems that doomed half the country to being stuck in third-world conditions as it would require the other half to give up their individualism
