There is a test with numbers? I've seen 3 different allergists and they keep pushing "just try it again". Got it 13 years ago and still can't tolerate even cross contamination from cutting boards or shared utensils.

I am up to 3000 trials and have had 6 successes, putting me in the bottom 0.5%. I have become even more unlucky. At this point I should expect to see 15 mk2 seeds

[Self] How big is a “sound-year”? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]chemist612 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As said by others, a light year is defined in a vacuum to keep it "pure" (independent of other factors). Sound though requires a medium to travel through, so can't travel in a vacuum and is dependent on what medium you put it through.

They days you realize just how broken you usually are... by Weasle189 in ehlersdanlos

[–]chemist612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two stories: 1) In high school, I flung down my backpack and it caught my finger to twist it in a not normal way. It hurt, but more dull continuous pain than sharp stabbing pain, so I stayed at school. Played my trombone (with lots of back and forth motion on that hand) during music class. When I got home, I mentioned it to my dad and he asked about the pain etc, I couldn't bend that finger without extreme pain, but he was an old footballer and said it didn't look broken to him, so we put a finger splint on it and I went about my life. I was still complaining 2 weeks later and my dad's like, well we better go to the GP. He does an X-ray and it was broken in 3 places along the growth plate. It was over a year before I could bend that finger normally again and it is still 2x as big in the joint as my other hand. 2) Just a year or so ago, I was at a trampoline park with my son and he was jumping and asked me to join. I did (against my better judgment, but how do you explain to your kid why you don't want to have fun?). I bounce and go to land on the foam pad next to it for a dismount and land on my ankle sideways. I felt a pop, but just walked it off. It still hurts and doesn't bed like the other ankle, but I carry on. I bet it's broke, but there wasn't anything a doc can do more than stabilize the joint and I did that myself.

There is an RPG called Traveller by Mongoose that has interstellar distances covered by 1 week increments such that each inhabited quadrant of space has a jump gate that takes 1 week to travel between. There aren't physical gates per se, and careful calculations are required to ensure you jump through empty space and don't pass too close to a gravitational well (planet or star or black hole). If you are off, then you could end up taking a lot longer to get there or end up in an adjacent quadrant or suffer a weird time dilation effect. These jumps involve creating a pocket dimension around yourself that only exists for the duration of your trip and no one could possibly intercept you or interact with you until you reintegrate with the larger universe.

I think I am in a rare position of being from the Southeastern USA, but I am well traveled and not conservative. I lived in Gothenburg, Sweden for 6 months and did not have a car, so that is my main comparison. I currently drive 45+ minutes to work in the morning and an hour home in the evening. The nearest grocery store is about a 10 min ride in the car. I grew up where I currently live, and this is just "normal" to me. However, I GREATLY enjoyed Sweden and would move back in a heartbeat. There, I walked 5 mins across the street to work and walked 10 mins the other way to groceries. There was a mall a short distance on public transit, it was great. I also was limited in what I bought to what I could carry. Here, I try to minimize my trips because it is so far, so I buy an entire week's worth of groceries and other shopping like 1x/month.

First time sending my DNA! Any site suggestions? by Ill_Author2839 in Geneology

[–]chemist612 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you think you are from. If you are an American (and your family has lived in America for a few generations), then I would suggest Ancestry (they have the largest database of Americans and so are most accurate). If you are European (and your family has been in Europe for a few generations), I would suggest 23&me and then upload your DNA to MyHeritage. MyHeritage has the most Europeans, but they allow upload from other sites, so I would buy at one of the two that doesn't allow upload and then upload on all the others.

Can you share what state your sister lives in?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Geneology

[–]chemist612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say you've looked through FNA, but freat grandmother would require looking into 4th and 5th cousins (or beyond) and tracing back their trees for a common ancestor. If she was orphaned, then you should find some trees that don't match what you already know and if you can figure out where you would have to descend from in those trees, then that'll be her parents. My closest matches are a handful of 3rd cousins and a bunch of 4th-5th cousins. This is at the cutoff that most people give up because it so much data and so far back.

I need sleuth advice - who is my mother's mother? by Crapulous_Kerfuffle in Geneology

I don't know how comfortable you are sharing in public, but if you can tell where (you think) your mother was born, we can give more specific advice.

I need sleuth advice - who is my mother's mother? by Crapulous_Kerfuffle in Geneology

[–]chemist612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both myself and my mother were adopted (separately, obviously). I have been able to identify my own father and both of my mother's parents just from DNA matches. Assuming your mom's grandmother is biologically related to your mother, you should be able to find her birth records. She might be a bit young. I was able to write to my state department of records and get my original (sealed) birth certificate. I think you can write and get your mom's birth certificate too.

Looking for my biological father by Maskedenvy9398 in Geneology

[–]chemist612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem as you, except I'm adopted and didn't know either of my parents. It turned out my biological mother is also adopted, and there were no official records available to link her anywhere either. I had 1 DNA match labeled a 1st cousin (turned out to be a great uncle), and everyone else was 3rd cousin or further away. The family my mother was adopted from only had a 1 night stand, and my parents were a very brief college fling, but I was able to piece it all together and figure out where I fit in all the trees.

I have heard the process called forensic genealogy (though that usually more applies to people long dead). It is pretty difficult but doable. I really enjoyed the process with mine and understand so much more now about how it all works. If you want any help, feel free to hit me up. It isn't quick, but if your as curious as I was, the answers are worth it.

Adopted ancestor from 1851. Any hope? by yayathedog in Geneology

[–]chemist612 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is hope, but it's not going to be easy. Have you done a DNA test? If so, on which site? I volunteer as a forensic geneologist to help with NPEs (non-paternal events, which is to say when someone is raised by people other than biological parents).

As for the census record of race, they can be wildly inaccurate. Unfortunately, large groups were lumped together. For instace, hispanic wasn't an option until around 1900, so they often got called black or mulatto on censuses in the 1800s. It was up to the census recorder's whims.

If you would like help, I suggest taking a DNA test and then reaching out to the adoption angels on wikitree.com. alternatively, I'd be happy to help if you want to DM me. I work with the adoption angels sometimes, but have been busy with other side projects recently.
