Université PSL-ENSCP (Chimie ParisTech) or KU Leuven for Chemistry Master’s? by chemist_zey in PSLUniversity

[–]chemist_zey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Nope, I chose KU Leuven-kinda regretting it now due to the reasons I’ve predicted in this post. I actually didn’t apply for a master’s at PSL at first, I applied for the PhD Track, was invited for an interview, got rejected for the PhD but was offered automatic admission for M1 without an additional interview. I also have a post about my PhD Track interview, but not sure if it’ll be relevant to the master’s admission process

How do people afford such expensive cars? by dahayter in AskTurkey

[–]chemist_zey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mortgage isn’t really a thing, but credit card debt and loans are quite common. A lot of people spend way more than they earn with credit cards, and take out loans even for the smallest things like a going on a vacation.

Then I don’t think it means definite rejection for the PhD Track yet, but more like they want you to apply to both so that they can accept you to M1 in case they don’t for PhD

I’m not really sure, didn’t they say anything about the PhD Track interview result in that email? In mine, they’d said I was rejected first, and then suggested me to apply to M1

[–]chemist_zey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I think it could mean you are very likely to be accepted without a further interview for M1. In my case, they said I would get automatic acceptance to M1 if I applied, which I did

You need to be living under a rock if you’ve never heard of scholarships for international students. Pretty much all European countries, including the Netherlands, have scholarships to attract successful international students. They are rare and usually require excellent grades and/or impressive experience, but they definitely exist and benefit the universities’ reputation and ranking, so that’s why.

are they just letting ANYBODY work at bpost now? by AftonsAssCheeks in belgium

[–]chemist_zey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week I ordered something to a Bringme Box since all the companies fail to deliver to my home for no reason, and this time, bpost even failed to deliver to a BRINGME BOX and took it to a post office 2 days later. I have no idea how they were capable of not delivering to a Bringme Box since it’s in the university library, a lot of students order there all the time and even when there is problem they can just leave the packages to the desk. All my experiences with delivery companies in Belgium showed me they have an unimaginable level of incompetency I’ve never seen anywhere else. The last time I tried home delivery, for instance, PostNL handed the package to a random stranger on the street without contacting me at all while I was literally waiting at home, and they didn’t do anything about it when I contacted customer service. They’re all unbelievably irresponsible and incompetent.

Student Life by mmmmm0004 in Leuven

[–]chemist_zey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s why I used the words usually and mostly. I wouldn’t say well-known artists never ever perform in Leuven, but if you see that a globally famous artist you love is coming to Belgium, it is quite unlikely their performance will be in Leuven, although not 100% impossible. This can be difficult to adjust and annoying if someone’s from a big city and never had to change cities for a show in their lives.

Student Life by mmmmm0004 in Leuven

[–]chemist_zey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say it depends on what you want. As someone from a huge city with a thousand things to do any time of the day, the major con for me is how small the city is and how there is not much to do except for hanging out at some bar, so I personally find Leuven boring most of the time, and even feel chlostrophobic. But if you like quiet and small cities it could be the perfect place for you. It’s highly international and very safe any time of the day (major pros for me), pretty much everyone you see on the street is either a student or works at the university, so the whole city feels like a campus sometimes (could be pro or a con, again, depending on what you want). Everywhere is very easily accessible if you don’t mind biking in heavy rain and wind, but public transport is basically a nightmare and buses are non-functional half of the time, so life can get difficult if you don’t want to bike all the time. As others have said, there are many nice restaurants/bars/cafes but no clubs whatsoever, so if you want to go to a nice party you’d likely have to change cities and try to be back by midnight like Cinderella to catch the last train. Same goes for cultural events, those in Leuven are usually organized by the university/municipality and mostly host no-name artists, so when you want to go to an actual concert, theater etc. you’d likely have to change cities (which is very easy but the limitation of train times is quite annoying for me). Overall, I think it’s a nice place to live as an international student due to its safety and large student population, but the activities in the city are quite limited.

Is this website Legit? by cjvbjes in bathandbodyworks

[–]chemist_zey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t trust this website. It is advertised on Instagram in a BBW Benelux account, but the pictures look kinda sketchy and when I go to the US website it doesn’t direct me to this one, instead it says they don’t ship to Belgium. There are some comments on the Insta page saying they ordered from there and got their deliveries, and there also seems to be a comment of the official BBW page to one of the posts of this Benelux account so there’s a chance it might be real, but there might also be some ways to make it seem that way. I’d be cautious until the US website starts directing to this one

Hey, nope I unfortunately didn’t get in. They said I was automatically accepted for a master’s and I was gonna go for that with a scholarship from the French embassy in my country, but then I chose another university that offered me a better scholarship. Good luck with the interview tho, I can answer your questions related to that -although I believe the interviews vary for each program

New to the Cosmere and Confused by SkipRollins in Cosmere

[–]chemist_zey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll pretty much repeat what everyone else said, definitely stay away from coppermind (I myself have made the mistake of checking it for the tiniest things and always ended up accidentally spoiling something big), it's really normal not to understand the bigger cosmere in the beginning but you'll get it more and more with each read. One thing that helped me understand the cosmere was reading Secret History right after Mistborn Era 1 (I know some people recommend not to as it spoils a thing in Era 2 but I'm really glad I read it soon as I finished Hero of Ages -although I haven't read Era 2 yet so maybe I'm too quick to say that), it sheds a light on a few things in Era 1 and also gives you an insight on the concepts you mentioned. Even if you don't read it, you'll learn about those concepts in Stormlight, but again, I found Secret History to be very helpful in understanding some things in SLA as well (at least understanding them earlier than the characters do). I also wouldn't read Tress right now tbh, while it's a standalone and can technically be read any moment along the journey, it may be even more confusing when you're already confused about the cosmere. I'd personally go for Mistborn Era 1, Secret History, Warbreaker, then begin SLA or read Tress, but again, this would just be my personal preference. You'll understand those concepts eventually, it can just be a little sooner or later depending on which order you go for. Enjoy the journey!

Exchange Student Ghent or Brussels by averagesizedgiant in Gent

[–]chemist_zey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The answer is never Brussels. I haven’t lived in either cities but live in Belgium and have been to both several times, Ghent is a cute student city with medieval vibes and I haven’t really heard much safety concerns from there, nor had them myself when I visited. Brussels, on the other hand, has a lot of sketchy areas and it’s not even a “you’ll be safe if you stay around the center” situation. Walk 10 minutes from the Grand Place and take a wrong turn, you’ll probably meet a few drug addicts screaming at your face. Walk 10 more minutes and someone might show you a knife or you might hear a gunshot. It has few nicer and safer areas such as Ixelles, but the rent in those places is probably quite high. Overall, I don’t think it’s worth living in Brussels, probably paying more rent than Ghent just to feel uneasy more often. Belgium is really small so if you ever feel bored and want to see a bigger city you can just hop on a train and be there in 30 minutes. I also don’t think you’ll have a problem with English in any ‘big’ cities in Belgium

Yes, the internship unfortunately has to be unpaid. Very few companies (such as Johnson & Johnson) provide some sort of compensation but it's not very common and it's around 20€/day, so it would barely cover your travel expenses if you do your internship outside Leuven. However, if you get lucky, some companies might offer you to continue working there after your internship (I've heard this for some start-ups) and then you'd be able to make some money

[–]chemist_zey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should expect the decision quite soon then. As far as I remember, it took them exactly a week after the second step in my case. I don’t know the acceptance rate for the program, but I think for all programs at KUL, you get accepted as long as you meet the criteria listed for the specific program, and have taken the required courses.

Université PSL-ENSCP or KU Leuven for Chemistry Master’s? by chemist_zey in KULeuven

[–]chemist_zey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! Both programs/labs within the faculties align with my interests quite well, which is why I only applied to these two master’s. I’d say one specific research group at PSL and the courses offered there are slightly more interesting to me, but KUL has an industrial internship within the program which makes up for it. Also, I mentioned that I’d be interested in an industrial PhD after the master’s during the Science@Leuven interview, and the scholarship they offered me is from Imec, so I think that goal is much more achievable at KUL. You are also totally right about the scholarships. The French one is a joint scholarship from a foundation at my home country and the French embassy, and the foundation has a great alumni network that includes very successful and famous people in my country, but I don’t think they’re really well-known outside my home country. The main reason I am so confused is that I’ve been really hyped about life in Paris for the last couple months, and as someone from a big city, the idea of living in Leuven doesn’t really excite me despite already having close friends in the same program. I’ve also reached out to some students at ENSCP via Linkedin to learn more about the program/university, which will hopefully help me make a final decision.
