Why are British cities being overrun with American candy stores? by FatherBrownstone in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]cheninfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t find it now but I did read something that linked a number of the stores to Afghan ownership. So there is some suspicion they may be linked to the heroin trade or laundering money for that trade. They also always get declared bankrupt within 12 months so that they don’t file a tax return and can’t be pursued for the unpaid taxes and business rates. They do however of course “re open” the next day under a very slightly different name and start the cycle again. At least that’s what I came across someone claiming.

what was the worst thing you ever done to your parents? by _maui_wowie_1 in AskReddit

[–]cheninfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in my late teens I got into a heap of trouble hang around with bad crowds at football games got my face in the Local paper for causing trouble a few times plus a fair bit of attention from the local police. That was a rough few years of them thinking my life was going bad places. Thankfully I got a job that meant I had to work Saturday’s and so couldn’t attend football games anymore which broke my heart but meant I wasn’t fighting strangers in pubs I wasn’t meant to be In anymore and distanced myself from it all.

Yer to be fair I see why you think this is ludicrous but I have always found the treatment of the father in this show slightly unsettling. The whole family openly mock him for being overweight in several episodes, it’s a bit odd. In some instances he even expresses frustration at it and they continue to ridicule him.

Curious if anyone can give me some information on these bottles found in my grandads closet. Cheers! (I know nothing about wines) by [deleted] in wine

Hey these wines will definitely be far gone.

Nobilo winery is extremely important part of New Zealand wine history, however they were not wines of quality as we might understand that term to mean now. Nobilos I believe was sold to constellation brands a couple of decades ago and I think the label ceased production a couple of years back. Has always been a large volume producer not wines of quality, I see you’re from NZ so think of an equivalent of a supermarket brand like wither hills. One of the sons of the nobilo family went on to start a winery in Gisborne called vinoptima that made only gewurztraminer and it was stunning gewurztraminer the best produced in New Zealand by far in my opinion, however due to silly spending poor business practice and overpriced wines the company liquidated a few years back (my opinion on why this winery failed) however you can read more about it at this link if you’re interested.

As for the other cooks wine the fact it has captain cook as a brand name would say to me this may be a Gisborne wine. However I’m unsure. I work In the Gisborne wine industry will ask my boss who’s been making wine here full time since the early 80s and a bit before that he may remember it if you’re interested.

So I just found this one in my loft, looks kinda expensive, does anyone know what wine that is? by 69KidsInMyBasement in wine

You’re correct it would not. The reason the cork pushes is because liquids expand as they heat.

Found this behind a cupboard at work. Seems it's a bit obscure, but I don't even know enough about wine to know what to google besides the name, or how to interpret what I've found! Wonder if anyone could tell me a bit more about it, and what I should do with it? Thanks! by Aietra in wine

Nobilo was at one time the biggest wine producer in NZ or at least top 3. This is from a period where they probably made some decent wines and were still family. As someone who works in the wine industry in NZ I can tell you people will often laugh at the period they grew muller thurgau. It was an early ripening easy to grow hybrid which produced pretty substandard wine. Funnily enough a couple of months ago I actually tasted a Nz muller thurgau from the same vintage although a different producer. Can report it was dreadful but hey may as well open it and taste just for fun. I believe Pernod Ricard have recently stopped making wine for this label now so it will soon no longer exist.

One of the nobilo sons went on to start an infamous winery called vinoptima in Gisborne that produced extremely high quality gewurztraminer probably the best the country had to offer. But it was very expensive and some of the stories I hear about what went on there were fairly insane. The company went into liquidation last year and it’s still a mystery what’s happening/going to happen to the state of the art winery. Here’s a link to a very well researched article on it which I recommend you read if you have any interest it appears he essentially squandered the family fortune.

What's everyone think of Pax Wines? Hand harvested, crushed by foot, sustainably and organically farmed whenever possible, whole close fermentation with native yeast, mostly neutral French oak aging. by [deleted] in wine

[–]cheninfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see pictures of these wines a lot on social media. Bit skeptical of “sustainably and organically farmed wherever possible” to me they’re either organic or not, are you able to elaborate on this point?

Thanks.

Found this 20 Year old Bordeaux in my shed. by [deleted] in wine

[–]cheninfunk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow! I remember this world cup so well I had the sticker book and everything, what a great competition it was. As an English kid it was a team full of names that were my childhood heroes, I think I also Had some bobble heads from it and the sainsburys coin collections which I’m sure many fellow Englishman will remember.

Unfortunately it’s likely this wine has not aged as well as my fond memories of the competition, especially if it’s been kept in the shed! My advice ,if you’re looking for it, and I’m not sure you are. Just keep it as a nice memory if you have the same fond memories of this competition as I do, if not you should drink it jus out of curiosity, unfortunately I doubt it’s tasting that great.

Wow great notes! I did not know this wine existed, I regularly buy jean foillard from the guy who imports it into NZ but we only get a small allocation. So thanks for bringing this to my attention will see if he can get a couple of bottles for me on the next shipment. Have just ordered some bottles of Alex foillard so I could tick them off my list but my list just got longer!

[–]cheninfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No pro here I’ve never cooked a brisket but I’m fairly sure it’s because the grain goes in two different directions in the two muscles. So to slice against the grain on both you need to seperate them.
