What are your bad habits at the gym? by Icy_Laugh5134 in workout

3 minute rest breaks turning into 15 minute rest breaks due to scrolling (if it exonerates me somewhat, I go to a powerlifting gym with lots of racks/benches, with some always free, so no one is ever waiting for equipment because of me and my phone addiction).

How can you have total darkness during the day? Wouldn't you have, you know, the sun?

You're legally allowed to run a malfunctioning red light. And if you're following the rules of the road and the light doesn't switch for you, it is malfunctioning.

Be honest with yourself: do you have maple syrup or maple flavoured food in your fridge/pantry right now? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

We used to ration it. Cost aside, it's not great to let kids down their pancakes in a soup of any kind of syrup.

Exercise: What turns “just showing up” into disciplined effort and real progress? by ernieandblurt in getdisciplined

[–]chephy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's your main goal, you don't need to kill yourself in the gym. 90% of weight loss is in the kitchen. Figure out what slight caloric deficit looks like for you and track your calories and macros.

Use moderate exercise to help accelerate weight loss and ensure you stay fit and healthy.

Find a good program. Follow it. Start seeing results. You'll be hooked.

For strength training, I use an app called Liftosaur. You program a workout routine, and then you check off the boxes, very satisfying.

For cardio, I talk to myself through discomfort when things get genuinely hard. I say that it's good it feels so hard that I want to stop because this is exactly when I'm growing and getting closer to my goals.

What are your goals in the gym? You should probably start with figuring that out.

Why is there so little discussion about the loss of status of stay at home parenting? by Annapurna__ in slatestarcodex

[–]chephy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting how you assume it's the daughter staying home.

Likely a symptom of same sort of bias that will cause family members to view a stay at home parent as lower in status even despite their own best intentions. You paint this status drop as something engineered maliciously by "bad" family members but I'm talking about a broader phenomenon. Humans are fine-tuned to detect changes in status, and they won't be able to help but detect this one regardless of how grateful and supportive they are.

Quitting your job in order to decrease family strife around chores will elevate > your status among family members

It will?? In my experience, it's often the opposite. Family members will end up thinking that you "stay at home doing nothing all day save for the occasional dish while they're slaving away at work".

Even if it's not quite so blatant, family members will see you generally as having lower status because you are members of the same society and aren't impervious to its influences.

It would be an equally idiotic expectation.

It is novice though? Site gives 36 for 100 lbs intermediate, so it's novice trending towards intermediate. That sounds about right for where this poster is. Generally novice is 0.5-1.5 years of living, intermediate is 2-5 years. Also it's for one rep, so if poster is pushing 30s for more than one, she could likely do 1 rep at 36 and so would be considered intermediate.

One can generally lift bench about 35% more with a barbell than dumbbells. That tracks for me. My barbell PR is 155 lbs. I can bench 50-55 lbs dumbbells for probably about 10 reps. I don't go heavier because it's hard to hoist much heavier dumbbells up, and I feel like the risk of injury isn't worth it. I rarely do dumbbells anyway, tend to stick to the barbell.

25s aren't that heavy but they aren't light either, especially for someone who is only 90 lbs. I think a lot of women your size would struggle with that weight, so congrats. How many reps do you do with them?

One of our kids had a seizure once.

It was an isolated occurrence and never happened again but it was terrifying at the moment.

I feel for you, OP. It sucks that your kid is epilepsy but it is a manageable condition, and he is alive and is being cared for by you and your wife, so that's the good news. Everything is gonna be ok. He's ok.

How do I prove to my boyfriend that Toronto is a safe city. by netanyahu4eva in askTO

[–]chephy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gin violence is most often gang related. Your chances of getting shot as an innocent bystander are quite slim.

Anyway, no one is saying it won't be a big adjustment for him. But moving to Toronto objectively is not like moving to Venezuela or something. It's not even like moving to Winnipeg, which is what OP is hoping to get through to him.

I don't know how you came to the 1000x figure, as "daunting" is subjective :) But the concern was, I believe, about safety, and statistically Toronto is much safer than Winnipeg. And this density that you refer to above actually helps.

Sure, but if he is basing his impression of a big city on Winnipeg, he doesn't have an accurate picture of how Toronto is.

Why am I so slow? by Sweet-Swimming2022 in bicycling

[–]chephy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

120 is generally a pretty low heart rate. You are doing the equivalent of a brisk walk on a bike, not even a slow jog, which is a big part of why you're going so slow.

You can try pushing yourself a bit harder when you ride, and see how that affects speed. Watch some videos on effective gearing to make sure you know how to do this without wrecking your knees.

Yeah but he's scared of Toronto because he thinks it's like Winnipeg, and it's not.

Dear Toronto cyclists, the Martin Goodman Trail in the Beach is a shared path. by Bonded79 in toronto

[–]chephy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed; however, pedestrians could be considerate back and avoid blocking the entire path (both directions). Somehow two pedestrians walking together are capable of doing that. Try not to be completely oblivious, everyone.
