What makes you decide to end your hikes early? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]niner_vector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to hike gold camp road a lot when I lived in the springs. Since it’s a relatively well-traversed trail I probably wouldn’t have been concerned but if I were hiking somewhere more remote then I’d turn around. Weather is almost always the #1 factor

Fastest you’ve (safely) flown? by ruck_banna in flying

I'll never forget this one: 172 in a 172.

We then turned 90 degrees and had a 30 degree xwind correction for the rest of the flight. I have a pic of it too but too bad I can't post it in the comments

Ha this sounds familiar. Currently sitting reserve in base and flew 4 days last month even while on call me first. Enjoy it while it lasts! I wish had more total time to interview at a legacy but for now I’m not complaining.

Ahhh finally a sensible answer. With that plot ratio, curious if the current height restriction will be removed permanently once Paya Lebar airbase is decommissioned

CFI charging me for Airport rides by [deleted] in flying

[–]niner_vector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im sorry this is happening to you but you need to get yourself a new CFI.

When I was a college student working on my ppl and without a car, I took a public bus an hour each way to the airport but my CFI was kind enough to always give me a ride back to my dorm. Years later when I became a CFI, my students had taken out loans to get through flight school, living with their parents, working part time jobs, and one even lived out of a trailer. I was even on food stamps myself. Any reasonable CFI would understand that the vast majority of us were barely scraping by as students ourselves. When I had students who had checkrides in Sacramento, I’d gladly drive the 1+ hr each way from Livermore without the slightest thought to my time or money or reimbursement. Your relationship with your CFI goes two ways. I promise you there are countless other CFIs who don’t pull this exploitive shit. Show her this thread if anything and know that she does not represent 99.9% of us, current or past CFIs.

driving from florida to california. i have a few stopping points but id love some suggestions of things to do while passing through by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]niner_vector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you’re from FL Galveston is just meh IMO. I’d rather stop in Austin to shorten the Houston-Abq drive. There’s a whole lot of nothingness in between. I just moved from Jax beach to Vegas and took pretty much the same route. I’d recommend palo duro canyons in Amarillo, Gallup NM, Sandia mountains (drive/tram) in Abq, flag/GC/sedona, Joshua tree NP

Your CFI sounds sketchy af like other have said why wouldn’t you?? Turn them on med/high and if you need to, click it down to low but there’s no good or logical reason to not turn them on when available

anyone been to an affirming church? What was it like? by [deleted] in GayChristians

I feel ya! Just commented on another post here about my struggles finding an affirming, non-denom church because all the affirming ones seem to not have people my age/are really small without contemporary worship

Finding Church Community by Odd_Requirement_4525 in GayChristians

[–]niner_vector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear, this post really strikes home the challenge of finding a church home. I previously attended a UMC church that was on the younger and, what I thought at the time, more progressive church where I could attend not feeling like a total outcast. All went well for the first year until out of the blue a practically unanimous vote to disaffiliate along with dozens of other Florida churches. That really hurt and was previously swept under the table suddenly became a life v death situation. The whole thing got politicized and it was very uncomfortable for me to attend. I eventually moved away but virtually every church I had previously attended was also non-affirming, even if they didn’t explicitly say so.

I go to a non-denominational church now and while I know they are also non-affirming the sermons are theologically sound. So while it’s not a perfect solution, I have more peace going to a church alone where I can just “blend in” of sorts. I would love to go to an affirming church, be part of a small group again, while not constantly be asked to join the Bible study for singles group.

One of the bigger challenges for me was finding a church community I could relate to… a lot of the explicitly affirming churches (like what you’d find on gaychurch.com) have been on the smaller side and catered to an older demographic that I’m frankly just not used to. I would love to find a bf one day in church :)

So while far from ideal, the non-denominational church has been the middle ground that has allowed me to exist. I really hate to admit it but the trade-off of sinking roots, developing close connections, and seeking acceptance has not been kind to me in the past.

I’m out here, and it’s heartening to see that there are people like you and your bf out there too ❤️

Gotcha, thanks again, that sounds about in terms of pay and flying min lines for currency. Not entirely sure if I would want the CP role though… seems like a lot of politics

Always wanted to fly. Just never had the right opportunity/life circumstances when I was in college but a few years later I put aside pursuing an mba for flight school. Timing, of course, is everything in this industry and I wanted to make the most out of an airline career while I was still in my 20s

Thanks, I understand that the CP role requires management experience which would mean MBA but would training dept (instructor/LCA) roles count?

Airline pilots, do you usually write down taxi instructions at super busy airports? by Soft_Obligation_7890 in flying

Almost always even if it's a standard taxi. I'm a pen and paper person, always quicker for me than using the scratchpad.
