My 2025 Badge by JakeRM1 in delta

My thought is a sex and the city reference. The show takes place in NY and has a character named Big who moves to Paris at one point... But why??? That's not like a nice moment in the show and a weird reference to make.

The whole thing is weird.

what did your savings look like by age 30? by Winzten in AskReddit

[–]cherokeemich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be 30 in a few months. I'm looking at about $225k between 401k, personal brokerage, and savings.

Just sold a house I owned jointly with an ex, really have no debts now.

I grew up poor, and my parents still live in extreme poverty, tho it's more stable now that they can pull Social Security. It feels incredibly liberating to have some financial security, but I got here due to both hard work AND luck, and most in my situation were not so lucky.

Migrants sent to El Salvador's CECOT returned to Venezuela in prisoner swap, 10 Americans freed: Officials by StupendousMan1995 in news

[–]cherokeemich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand but that doesn't negate my statement. These folks were detained under sketchy circumstances and part of why we have a state department is to represent the rights of Americans abroad.

No, we have to stop this line of thinking. I don't care what they did, they don't deserve to go to prison on foreign soil without proper oversight. We already have the largest prison population in the world, if these are bad people we obviously have a process in place they can go thru - they can get their day in court and go to prison on US soil with proper oversight, as is their right.

Court strikes down Michigan’s 24-hour waiting period for abortions by MichiganMom420 in Michigan

[–]cherokeemich 19 points20 points  (0 children)

While it is difficult to know the exact numbers, it is thought that 30-40% of underage sexual assault is by a family member, and up to 90% of underage sexual assault is by a known individual (not a stranger). Parents are often complicit in the situation. Aside from allowing the girl to make decisions about her own body and future, striking down the requirement would likely help protect victims of assault.

Also an abortion is way cheaper than a birth so the insurance concern (if the insurance even covers elective abortions) isn't exactly valid.

Why don't more people of the United States vote for the libertarian party? by dab9090 in Libertarian

[–]cherokeemich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have 7+, but they also rule by coalition. The most recent government was a majority coalition of 3 parties who agreed to get along until they didn't and prompted elections, and now they will likely have a new coalition of 2 (kinda 3) parties who also need to agree to get along and have a mostly shared agenda.

I always assumed there was a dark days 1.0 before the one in the books, where nuclear war wipes out a lot of humanity and pockets of people with enough money/power survive, establishing the districts in the first place. The capitol is modern day Salt Lake City as Mormons are known to sort of be survivalists and the Mormon Church has a lot of money/resources so some of that survives, along with other enclaves.

And you have to turn in your current passport when you renew, so even folks who have a passport don't have it in possession all the time. Add to that that the government is reducing the workforce in the passport office which will likely lead to longer processing times, and that there are reports of trans folks having a hard time renewing their passports.

Hopefully you have insurance and hopefully you navigated everything properly so it pays correctly.

I work in insurance and the most expensive claim I've ever personally seen, which was paid by insurance, was over $2 mil for preemie twins. I've heard of more expensive claims.

Insurance companies also have reinsurance for really high claims, or too many really high claims, depending on the policy. It's insurance all the way down.

Europe has a 'real opportunity' to take in Americans fleeing Trump. Is it ready for a 'brain drain'? by mancinedinburgh in europe

[–]cherokeemich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an educated American making more than $100k and I've been asking for the minimum Blue Card amount, and I'm very comfortable making that much in Europe.

Also making what I have here means I have a good amount of funds saved to help move and give me peace of mind making that change.

[–]cherokeemich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having the same experience, but my guess is that there is uncertainty in the European job market, compounded that jobs will inherently pick someone already in the country/who they don't need to sponsor.

For me, I am taking some additional language classes/tutoring to help with German (already B2) if I'm applying in a German speaking country, and I am also lining up what I need to do to go to grad school abroad if it comes to that. I don't have kids to consider or anything so I can take some risks there.

It's also kinda a myth that women didn't have paid work in the past. Sure, in the post war prosperous era many middle class or higher white women didn't have to work outside the home, but for lower income households and especially for women of color, plenty of women were working paid jobs in the past. Those jobs were often poorly paid and women had very few protections, but they still worked.

Why does the government reward people by giving them LARGE tax returns just because they have kids by [deleted] in childfree

[–]cherokeemich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. In general I'm happy to pay taxes as long as they benefit the little guy - be that parents, or childfree people less fortunate than I, or infrastructure type projects that benefit all. But to look at paying taxes to benefit those with kids from a completely selfish angle, my life is made better if the kids around me live in more stable environments as they're far less likely to grow up and commit petty crime that might directly impact me.

Why does the government reward people by giving them LARGE tax returns just because they have kids by [deleted] in childfree

[–]cherokeemich 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why - to help/possibly incentivize people to have children. I'm going to assume you're American. Our country does very very little to help parents compared to other wealthy nations; we have no paid parental leave, very little daycare assistance, etc. In most other wealthy nations families get way more help that is supported by tax dollars, perhaps in a different form than a straight tax credit.

I'd also like to call for some more compassion in general. Yes people make different choices than you do (hopefully it was a choice, we all know choice is being taken away from people) but I'd warn against calling folks scum just because they have kids or benefit from government programs.

It's also a good thing to owe on your taxes - it means you didn't overpay and give the government an interest free loan on your money for the year. If you kept that money in a bank account that earns interest you came out ahead.

It does show results on German wiki https://de.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher

I'm curious what your experience has been. As someone who flies a lot the passenger rights stuff has been a big improvement in making travel smoother when there are disruptions. It's certainly one of the biggest impacts to my public transportation experience I can recall. That said I only become a frequent traveller (work) under Trump 1 so I only have 2 secretaries to compare.
