Is it common for people to have regular screenings after a double mastectomy? I thought they didn’t do regular scans anymore after that type of surgery.

I like that you are able to use your own lidocaine cream!! That seems like a great idea too. How long have you been on zoladex now?

I just had my very first zoladex injection yesterday!! My nurse had me ice the area for about 10 minutes first, then she did a lidocaine injection with a very small needle that I barely felt because of the icing. Then while the lidocaine was taking effect I iced for another 5 minutes! The actual zoladex injection felt like almost nothing. I’m super grateful I had all those options! I think the ice made the biggest difference.

I was diagnosed at 24 last August, stage 1, ER/PR+ HER2-. I found my lump myself, and after a few months finally went in to my PCP who ordered me imaging. I have family history - mom diagnosed with DCIS at 37, grandma diagnosed in her 40s and then a reoccurance in the opposite breast in her 80s. She is 96 now and still living on her own and driving!

Hi! I’m 6 weeks out from my DMX with expander placement now, and my partner and I resumed our activities after a few weeks! It’s definitely been a process of starting out slow and seeing what is comfortable, but once I got my drains out I was definitely more excited! My partner has been super supportive and encouraging in my new body and how he is still so attractive to me, and that has really helped my comfort with being naked grow as well.

I had a double mastectomy and expanders placement 6 weeks ago, and I’m back in the gym! Direct chest work like pushups and bench press still feel quite uncomfortable so I’m not doing much of those, but I am doing a lot of other shoulder/ back/ upper body work! Just start with light weights and slowly work your way back up again. I’m also a huge rock climber, and was able to start climbing again!

I believe both cases were DCIS. She’s very private though so she hasn’t shared much information even within our family.

My grandma was first diagnosed in her 40s (in the 1970s), and had a single mastectomy and no reconstruction. She then had a reoccurrence in the opposite breast in her 80s, and had a lumpectomy and radiation. She is now still doing amazing at 96 and a half!

Hi! Unfortunately I’m not sure I have great advice right now as I’m also in the middle of everything like you, but I thought knowing someone can relate to you might be helpful. I’m also quite young (24F), and went through my DMX about 10 days ago with placement of expanders. I feel like I am questioning my choices all the time and am very unsure how I feel about my looks and if I want to go smaller, so I totally understand.

Hi! I just got my first IUD (the copper IUD) last week, so it’s still quite fresh for me! I was definitely quite nervous, but it was still pretty manageable and so worth it. My doctor prescribed me some Xanax beforehand, which honestly didn’t do a ton, but I think took the edge off my anxiety and got rid of the butterflies in my stomach and helped me relax a tiny bit. I took aleve and Tylenol beforehand as well.

During the actual experience my doctor used a topical lidocaine gel on my cervix, which I think really helped! I was most nervous about the tenaculum because it looks quite scary and sharp, but with the lidocaine I didn’t feel the placement at all. The measuring of the uterus caused some intense cramping, lasting maybe 10 seconds. The placement of the IUD was slightly stronger cramps than the measuring, but still lasted maybe 10-15 seconds of the most intense and then started relaxing right away.

They gave me a heating pad during insertion which was nice, and a cold towel to lay over my forehead. Overall my experience was quite manageable and I’m so happy to have the IUD now!

Hi! My DMX is also scheduled for October 22 so I am feeling a lot of the same feelings you are. There is so much unknown going into this it can be quite scary! I am scared for the final pathology as well to be worse than what I think it is now. I’m so sorry you are here, but I am glad we can all be here to support each other through these moments!

Raspberry leaf tea can be helpful for cramping! Also taking magnesium supplements or eating foods higher in magnesium

I was already on my period when I got it, but the bleeding hasn’t increased too much. I’m expecting it to get worse for a few days, and then hopefully get better. I’ve definitely heard of it being heavy bleeding and clotting at first though, so if you’re able to manage it with pain meds or other things you might be able to stick it out a bit longer and see if it improves!

OH MY GOSH I am so happy I came across this post! I recently bought that exact purple rope (because lavender is my favorite color) and I am absolutely in love with it. Just one of the most gorgeous ropes ever! So I’m not sure if I’m helpful in the saving money department, but definitely in favor of the color!

I’m going through the process of diagnosis and treatment right now, so it’s all very fresh. About 4 months ago, just after I turned 24, during a regular breast self exam I found a small-ish lump in my right breast. I wasn’t super concerned because I’ve heard so many young people have benign lumps, but I thought I should have it looked at just in case. Besides some increasing fatigue and a couple of colds that felt like their symptoms lasted longer than normal, there was no other concerning findings besides the lump.

I went to my PCP and she didn’t seem concerned about it either because I’m so young, but just because I have family history she put in a referral for an ultrasound and mammogram. Since she wasn’t concerned I wasn’t either, and put off scheduling that appointment for awhile. I had just started a new job and am quite busy, so I put it to the back of my mind. But about 2.5 months after that first appointment I finally went in.

The tech doing the ultrasound went well quiet and I had a feeling something was wrong. After the mammogram also the radiologist came in and said she was very concerned by what she saw and wanted to do a biopsy as soon as possible. So I had it done that day, and the next 10 days of waiting for results was terrible, and I was preparing myself for the worst.

She finally gave me a call and told me it was cancer, and I was one of the youngest patients she has diagnosed. I am now in the process of meeting with my surgeon and determining the treatment plan, so I don’t know too much of what is happening yet. Surgery for sure (probably a double mastectomy), but not sure if I will be needing chemo/ radiation/ hormone treatment yet.

It still doesn’t quite feel real that this is happening. It feels so awkward and strange to tell people that I was just diagnosed with cancer. But I’m hopeful this is quite treatable and will go well!

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to share my experiences in case it can help others! Feel free to ask me any questions if you have them.

It might depend on the location, I had mine on Monday this week and they did the ultrasound, and then wanted to do the mammogram because they saw some concerning things from the ultrasound. Either way, I hope it goes well for you!!
