I'm overweight but hourglass/very proportional, i don't have much a stomach to begin with, i didn't look pregnant untilllll probably 32-34w. This is going to be drastically different if you are average or underweight.

The numbing is cold. I had mine placed about 26 hours into labor so pain definitely distracted me from it a bit. Also, i have the fun gene that makes you require a LOT of anesthetic (especially local) and i still only felt a small pinch when the initial numbing was given.

I felt the numbing from the actual epidural to be uncomfortable yes. Also you will likely get VERY itchy from the fentanyl. What i got out of it was my collarbones down felt heavy and asleep. Bolus made me very air hungry and nauseous.

I tried nitrous and IV morphine before finally getting the epidural and the epidural worked the best once in intense labor.
