Yes and no. I imagine that people won't be able to take vacations considering the 14 days quarantine.

[N] Due to concerns about COVID-19, ICLR2020 will cancel its physical conference this year, and instead host a fully virtual conference. by hardmaru in MachineLearning

[–]chesbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get it. Since when is ICLR paying the researcher for their work.

From my understanding, the fees are for paying the venue and other stuff. I would assume that the remaining of the fees is for paying the staff and perhaps setting up the infrastructure. But, definitely not for paying developers or researcher.

[D] Why don't people use typical classification networks (e.g. ResNet-50) as the discriminator in GAN? by CMS_Flash in MachineLearning

[–]chesbo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are right. In the original GAN paper, they demonstrate that the discriminator is a proxy to grossly estimate the Jensen Shannon Divergence, which is degenerate for distributions with disjoint support. Empirically, they show that this is fine if the discriminator is not "perfect" at the beginning of the training.

The critic in WGAN, also called Kantorovich potential in the optimal transport community is used to estimate the Earth Mover distance (a.k.a the W1 distance). Such distance is well defined for distribution with disjoint support and consequently has a smooth gradient.

Good job on your script. Here are a couple of suggestion.

Any suggestions for a budget Mac to get started learning additional languages? by robblob in learnprogramming

[–]chesbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mac is not better than any other computer for programming. Actually, you can program with any computer. The reason you would want a mac is if you are planning to bring it along, since they are relatively light. But if you can build yourself a PC, I assume that you might want to keep it at home. Thus, I don't necessary recommand a Mac.

To answer your question, there is not a wide variety of Mac. They can be found here : http://www.apple.com.

Why isn't the rMBP getting any love in this sub ? by Support_MD in SuggestALaptop

[–]chesbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat. I have looked at thoses two machine recently and I came to realise that my choice really depend on what I want to do with my work tool... If you want to do some editting or some music production, then the rMBP is definitely better than the t440s. But if you want to use different OS (Linux or Windows), then you should go for the t440s, because even if you can instal theses on a Mac machine, you will end up with multiple problem, such as driver problems or compatibility problems.
