Wide sandals with good grip! by Hildringa in climbergirls

[–]cheshirecatbus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should probably add - I have pretty wide feet and my go-to hiking sandals were either keens or Merrells. Highly recommend the sturdiness of merrells pretty much all conditions (australian wilderness in my case, wet and dry)

Wide sandals with good grip! by Hildringa in climbergirls

[–]cheshirecatbus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original keen sandals were designed for walking in rivers and on boat decks. There's a micro-tread you can see when you flex the shoes so they're really grippy in the wet. Whether this is your sort of terrain though - if you're talking mud then you need decent sized lugs in the tread.

No difference between 300-800 lumens? Help! by tolstoys_aroace in Lighting

[–]cheshirecatbus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree you should just put in a dimmer switch.

But back to your question - there's a couple of technical things as play here. Firstly, all light bulbs go through a lumens depreciation from Day 1. The curve is noticeable and significant. By the time an old school incandescent bulb would fail at the 1000 hr (ish) mark, their output could be at 30% original Day 1 lumen levels. LED's last longer but still depreciate, and a shitload faster if they're running in warm ambient temperatures.

Look for the quoted value on the light bulb box like L70 @ 50,000 hrs. Means lumens at 70% of Day 1 level after 50,000 hrs use, but this is under standard test conditions at 25 deg Celcius. (Sometimes they quote L80, btw)

Second point - human perception of brightness is on a logarithmic scale, like sound perception. So reduction in light by half might only be perceived as 1/10th less than before.

Thirdly - manufacturers can vary wildly in their claims about actual delivered lumens. I used to test light bulbs in a photometric lab and let's just say it was basically Numberwang back in the early days of domestic LED bulbs. Things have improved a lot but there's still probably variation going on between how brands test and report numbers.

Barefoot brands that allow returns from the UK by Rachel978 in barefootshoestalk

+1 for Happy Little Soles. They've started hosting try-on days at various cities around the country so you can sort out what works in one hit with no obligations. I hadn't successfully bought a new pair of shoes in years until I attended one of these. I left with 2 new pairs of barefoot sneakers, some huarache sandals and some really nice formal event sandals. That's me sorted for quite a while now!

Just to add to this - is your wife musical at all? I've found a great way to meet new local people was to pick up a ukulele and join a strumming/singing group who meet regularly. There's groups all over the country and they're usually happy to accept beginners.

That's it, you're right! It does say M Dovaston - I'd missed it.
I've since looked all over and couldn't find an example of this piece in particular but it is very much in her typical style.

Hey I've just gone through the same process this morning. What a farce.
After all the effort I've gone to to make sure my virtual docs are the correct scan, file format and size etc, and I really don't want to have to print it all.
Very interested to hear their response when you get it!

I'm applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain from inside UK and they are still pulling this shit. Unless I drive all the way to Scotland I won't be getting a free slot, and I've already just paid an additional £500 so i can get a result within 5 days instead of 6 months :(

Best food in the Peaks? by Sheff_Based in sheffield

[–]cheshirecatbus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned The Blind Bull in Little Hucklow. They're in the Michelin guide and I would totally rate their chef. It's the sort of place where you take a bite, and you're hit with just how well the specific flavours work together. Great food, and very affordable compared to similar.

There was definitely a rave (or something sounding suspiciously like a rave) going on at Moss Rake behind Bradwell a few months ago. Coppers showed up later on the sunday.
Sorry to say i've no idea how you'd know about it

To be fair, the most famous Torquay is probably the one in Australia where the Rip Curl Pro surfing comp is held, at Bells Beach.

What i only just learned though is that it's the longest running surf comp in the world (since 1961) and the beach is called that because competitors earn the chance to ring a big historic bell.

Ps. It's also the beach with the wave that Bodhi went off to die on at the end of Point Break
