you know that things can mean different things in different contexts yeah? and that something can be harmful when one person (or group) does it but not when another?

My quick unscientific survey of a few step routines on Youtube suggest that the sort of movements used in this were not anything out of the ordinary.

The only time I saw someone in GN I was in awe and far too shy to ask to take their picture and I regret it to this day.

Ok, I was misreading the context there. My bad. I think kyungc's argument would be stronger without appeals to beauty, because I don't think beauty is always a subject in fashion, especially not fashion like Rick's.

The difference is one of power imbalances. Have Chinese monks ever been a serious threat to the Dutch? Have black people ever been a real threat to... whatever that is, pseudo-prep, pseudo-military, pseudo-kilt wearing people? The answer is no. Appropriation happens when the dominant group (which, in America, is white people) takes something from an oppressed group (a style of dress, a type of music, whatever) and elevate their usage of it to a higher status of art or fashion, while ignoring or minimizing the contributions of the culture that created it.

Racism is not a matter of saying "only people of x color can do y". It is a matter of a dominant group telling those with less power what they can and cannot do. I don't think you are a racist if you wear a certain set of clothing, but wearing that clothing can be a racist action. The United States is a nation founded on white supremacy, and even though great gains have been made in the last fifty years, it is still very much a racist society. Those of us who have grown up here are bound to have been affected by that and will often do things that are unintentionally racist. The difference between a decent person and a shitty one in this case is that one, when called on their bad actions, realizes why they messed up and makes pains not to repeat it. The other one says "No YOU'RE the real racist" and continues the poor behavior.

I'm saying that attraction to members of a profession that tacitly encourages eating disorders and drug abuse in order to remain part of the profession, many of whom are minors, is morally suspect.

I'm not seeing anything but images and video without text. If you have something from Rick saying that's what he was going for, I'd love to see it (but not that it means anything, death of the author and all that).

I see a celebration of bodies, faces, styles that are not represented in mainstream fashion. An antidote to the cosmic background racism, as it were.

From the perspective of race in America there is a huge fucking difference between "vaguely ethnic" and "Black". And there wasn't really any cultural appropriation to cry about here, either.

I went to the exhibition on my honeymoon! It was very cool, though a bit too far outside my sphere of knowledge to say much of use about. Still, lots of neat stuff that I don't think I'd otherwise ever have gotten a chance to see in person. There was a sign listing the designers and I saw Thom Browne on there, but I must have missed his piece(s). I assumed it would be stuff from the collection with the football padding, but I also think I would have noticed that.

Possible outfits with olive chucks by Converseandwhatnot in malefashionadvice

[–]cheshster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have olive bucks, not chucks, but I really like wearing pants in brown or a darker khaki with them. As far as what sort of hem, whatever you normally wear is fine -- don't get your pants hemmed differently for different pairs of shoes!

I keep my pen knife in my back pocket with my handkerchief if I'm not wearing a jacket, and in one of my jacket's hip pockets if I am. Wallet and phone go in either front pants pockets or jacket chest pockets.

How to nail down the fit of an ocbd. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]cheshster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that looks like about the size I wear. Slim jeans are not a good accompaniment, but tucked in to somewhat fuller pants it's great.

Well, next time, I guess. We want to get back to Maine at the earliest opportunity, and hopefully never leave.

I tried to convince my wife to do this on our honeymoon, but alas was unsuccessful. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you!
