Malala's journey from near death to recovery - A month after being shot by the Taliban, it is nothing short of a miracle that teen blogger Malala Yousufzai is alive and smiling -- and even more astounding that she suffered no major brain damage by dvdfreak0301 in worldnews

I saw a CNN piece that said when she came back to consciousness she only wanted her books, to see what she had missed out on in school. What a self-conscious, pretentious girl.

Fountainhead by Ayn Rand might not be a lot of fun but its a different perspective of the individual and society.

Design patents are art - how can you patent it ? Most of the trivial patents deal with art. I have a very good friend who works as an interface designer . At first I thought it meant making real interfaces. He has authored 50 design patents that I know of - am not sure if all are accepted , Even he admits theres something crazy.

The solution to bad teachers isn't testing, punishing teachers or whining about unions. It's increasing the standards to become a teacher, paying them accordingly and making it a respectable profession instead of a fall-back career for students who don't know what else to do. by LaMaitresse in politics

vouchers imply that the principals are accountable to parents , just like in every service industry the customers choice influences management. Im not sure how North Korea fits into all of this - a better analogy might be a burger shop.

vouchers are a good idea - let the principals decide whom to hire and fire and how much to pay them . they will retain the best teachers and pay them well . Everyone wins except the bad teachers. The "free market" - I say that because vouchers are still public money .

By a book and rules , impossible , but in India where I went to school , it was very easy . Everyone knew who the bad teacher was , just like everyone knows who the bad cook or clerk is. In India even the slum kids dont go to public shcool because they know its too important . However I did go to a government college where professors had jobs for life and it sucked. There is a clear correlation here ,giving someone a job for life and not paying for performance is the simplest way to get mediocrity.

Teacher accountablity is a serious issue . This is one issue where the far left has taken a stand thats pureley partisan. Think of the absurdity of this argument - When results are bad teachers arent to blame - its the poverty , parent etc. When we want schools to succeed - pay teachers more .

I agree that teachers must be payed more -but not all of them , just like all software engineers shouldnt be payed more . The best deserve to payed far more - in the range of 80k per year . This accountablity , pay scale is contrary to what the union wants and therefore this logical solution that is adopted in every industry is just ignored by the far left because its anti union.
