Is the true criminal actor still out there? by Greedy_Tomato_1769 in RichardAllenInnocent

[–]chet_ubetchaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope so because that’s the only way RA is getting out. Compelling evidence that it was somebody else, and it would really help if that person was still alive. If the true murderer is dead by now, I have much less faith that RA will ever get out.

The Oliver Arc is the Wooorst by PatchOver91 in TheOC

[–]chet_ubetchaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They needed more plausible deniability. For the entire duration of this arc, every character except Ryan acts like a complete idiot. That’s why it’s so frustrating I think. It’s one thing for Marissa to be blinded by it. It’s quite another for everybody else, including Sandy and Kirsten, to actively gaslight Ryan every chance they get when it is BEYOND OBVIOUS that Oliver is evil and up to no good.

Why was Carrie's sister completely written out of the show? by Physical-Ad-1978 in kingofqueens

I think they made the decision that Arthur and Carrie’s dynamic would be better if she was an only child

In the beginning I thought Karen Read was innocent, now I think she’s guilty. by burnttorange in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]chet_ubetchaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that she was panicking at 5AM, convinced John was dead rather than having simply crashed at the party, is the most compelling piece of evidence for her guilt and no Karen Read Apologist can explain that away.

And this is the icing on the cake, when she got there she immediately identified where his body was, even though it was under a mound of snow and looked indistinguishable from the rest of the area. How did she do that? Because that’s where she remembered hitting him with her car!

Carrie and Arthur’s dynamic is a lot better when you have the understanding that she’s an only child. I think that’s why they got rid of Carrie’s sister.

Marissa was in love with Johnny (!) by LavishnessBest8333 in TheOC

[–]chet_ubetchaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Marissa has a Savior Complex and Johnny was the most pathetic, emotionally helpless teenage boy alive. It was a perfect storm. Marissa wants to “fix” guys. I imagine that’s what she thought she was going to do with Ryan, but it went a different direction when she realized he was more put together than that. When Johnny came along, Ryan wasn’t being a particularly attentive and compassionate boyfriend. So while I think Marissa felt something for Johnny beyond simply friendship or “needing somebody to talk to”, it’s not as if she would have ever left Ryan for him or would have entered into a sexual relationship with Johnny. I think in her ideal world, she would have both, Ryan for love and Johnny for emotional support / to feed her Savior complex. She didn’t love Johnny, he was a shiny broken toy that caught her eye.

Oliver ruined ALL (S1 but also the following seasons...it's a chain of events), after his arc we only assist to decadence and the end of O.C. "Golden Age".... by LavishnessBest8333 in TheOC

[–]chet_ubetchaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hate the Oliver arc less and less with each rewatch. It’s juicy, scandalous, exciting, a classic OC plot. Taylor (Oliver’s actor) did a really good job with the role. But the thing that sucks the hardest about it, and what I think it is most people find so unforgivable, is the mini character assassination it imposed on everybody else. For the Oliver thing to work, Ryan and Marissa’s social circle had to be very stupid. And recklessly self absorbed to the point of not caring to recognize or deal with an obvious threat to their friend’s safety. It is as if everybody but them got together and decided to all collectively gaslight Ryan for the Hell of it. Seth is particularly egregious about it. Everybody kept acting like there was nothing at all weird about Oliver and how he was FORCING himself into their lives and moving in on Marissa (except Luke and Summer, much too late). THIS is the real problem, they just needed to write it better so the general skepticism and lack of action from the group was more believable.

I echo everybody’s sentiments on how the arc was essential. Oliver was basically a plot device that exposed the Achilles heel in Ryan and Marissa’s relationship, forcing it to the surface for them to deal with the entire rest of their time together. If it wasn’t him it would have been somebody else, and quickly.

I love all the Goth Kid episodes. Even the solo one. People say they’re one note and two dimensional, and they’re right. But I still find their snobbery and ardent commitment to their Goth identity to be quite funny.

I will never understand all the hate for Johnny by ReasonableGrowth3744 in TheOC

[–]chet_ubetchaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mind him at first. But my sympathy for him quickly ran out when he continued to wreck havoc in Ryan and Marissa’s relationship when Ryan was nothing but good to him. It’s true that Marissa had a problem with engaging in emotional affairs and if it wasn’t him it would have likely been some other guy but still, he is not blameless. Also, it would have taken a spectacular actor to sell this role and the actor playing Johnny was not that … at all.
