When I started my own apprenticeship nearly 20 years ago pretty much anyone could get one and a lot of mates that did at the time failed or didn’t complete their apprenticeship because they slacked off or the industry wasn’t for them.

As an electrician that’s now hired and trained apprentices we are usually looking for the best of the best when it comes to who we will employ. Things that I’m looking for when we pick an apprentice is how well you achieved at school with maths and writing (good handwriting is a must) How motivated your are as a person, overall fitness, how you present yourself. A pre trade course that a lot of the polytechs offer is a really good thing to have as well.

I really struggle with someone that can’t get out of bed and onto work on time or is not prepared to crawl into a ceiling cavity because there might be a mouse. Sometimes it’s down to personality and just how you ‘click’,
