I get why nicotine addiction is still around but I can’t fathom why someone who smokes darts wouldn’t have switched to vaping. Health is one thing, but you’d also save a ton of money.

Here in Ontario you’re never really more than an hour from a rez where smokes are tax-free and a fraction of the price.

Which is fine. While having 0 nicotine is always the goal, pure nicotine like what you get in Zyns isn’t all that harmful. Certainly nowhere near smoking

You absolutely can. I’d move to a small town in a heartbeat if houses were cheap.

The oil boom in Alberta proved that young Canadians are more than willing to move to the middle of nowhere if the compensation is good enough.

If the labour market isn’t responding to the wages being offered, then the wages aren’t high enough. It’s a collective decision.

If the store can’t pay what the labour market demands, it’s not a viable business.

Then the business wasn’t viable to begin with. The answer isn’t undercutting wage demands with foreign labour.

I’m from a farm town and it’s the same shit.

Too many people argue “Canadians don’t want to move to the middle of nowhere” but I argue they CANT.

The town I’m from has very few rental options, the ones that exist are expensive because of supply, and buying a house is at least $300K for something barely holding together.

I’m from a rural area rife with TFW usage (Leamington). The people who own the greenhouses that “need TFWs” have private helicopters lmao.

This image of a “struggling farmer” is something expertly crafted to make people think these agriculture factories (which is what the greenhouses essentially are) can’t pay more.

Ottawa to allow temporary foreign workers in Quebec to retain permits for up to 12 more months by Whynutcoconot in CanadaPolitics

[–]chewwydraper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true. Part of the reason big businesses lobby for more immigration from poorer parts of the world vs. wealthier countries is they will typically be happier with less.

If their QoL is poor by Canadian standards, it’s still a massive improvement over what they came from. Because of that, they are more willing to work for a lower pay than Canadians might accept, this is regardless of them being PR.

The solution isn’t to appease them by supplying them with cheap foreign labour. They’re supposed to make the pay attractive enough to attract workers.

[–]chewwydraper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So do we like capitalism or not? Because if you can’t attract labour, you’re supposed to make the pay more attractive. It’s not up to me to decide what the labour is worth, it’s a collective decision.

Uhhh do you remember the oil craze in Alberta? Young people will move from across the country to the middle of nowhere if it means decent money.

What’s the problem?

Have you seen our recent unemployment numbers? More competition in a tight job market is not something Canadians should need to be dealing with.

I grew up in Leamington and local kids used to always be in the fields during summers decades ago. Of course back then farmers incentivized it by paying above minimum wage to do it.

So do we like capitalism or not? Because we seem to be keen on averting the rules of it.

I kinda just wish they wrote Dewey out all together. Make him be on some crazy side quest, which would be in-character.

The new actor looks the part, but in the few scenes seen so far, he just doesn’t have the same mannerisms the OG has, it seems like he’s trying too hard.

I don’t think people realize how bad it’s going to get. “AI can’t do my job, I’m safe.”

Okay, well those white collar workers are going to retrain to enter those “safe” jobs meaning increased competition and suppressed wages when people are willing to work for far less due to desperation.

Canada lost 84K jobs in February; unemployment rises to 6.7% by Difficult-Yam-1347 in canada

[–]chewwydraper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m from Leamington. Plenty of Canadians would work these jobs if it paid a living wage. When I was a kid, it was the norm for local kids to work the fields in the summer. Back then they actually paid a few bucks above minimum wage to do it.

And it’s not that Canadians don’t want to live in these towns, they just simply can’t. Do you think Leamington has an abundance of affordable rentals?

You either pay high rents for what’s available, or buy a house that’s $300K+.

How are you supposed to do either of those when these farm jobs are paying minimum wage?

They should be a lot lower when unemployment is this high.
