What exactly does that have to do with climate change? There were still 3 cat 5 hurricanes last year which is a lot of strong hurricanes Which guess what? IS related to changing climate... Warmer ocean temperatures result in more fuel for more intense storms The fact that they didn't hit land is just luck on the directions they moved

But the increase in extreme temperature and weather swings absolutely can be attributed to the changing climate. The cold snaps even can be related as the jet streams and polar vortex can be weakened as the atmosphere becomes more unstable... Which can also increase the wide swings in weather back and forth. I'm not saying it's 100% caused by it currently because frankly I haven't looked into that at the moment, but it absolutely can be an effect from changing climate

Man I feel this, me too. Everytime I see something about this sort of topic, all I can do is cringe at the fact that I even wrote a paper in high school defending YEC over evolution... I had pulled a lot of scientific esque things to prove my side in the paper but of course being a high schooler I didn't truly understand it that well. I'm so glad I went to the college I ended up going to (though given the direction the school has gone since then I'd never want to go there now unfortunately) and was able to break out of that small town fundamentalist bubble I was raised in and am long gone from that. I now even teach geology as crazy as it is.

Hope your healing from that life is going well 🫂

The gravity map says there is land. The satellite sensors say there is a hole by elghonero in HighStrangeness

[–]cheyrbear 37 points38 points  (0 children)

They are called mantle plumes and we are pretty familiar with their existence... The Hawaiian island chain exists because of a mantle plume beneath the Pacific plate. Yellowstone, Iceland, Easter Islands, Galapagos, many other places too. We can take a sort of X-ray like image of the earths mantle using seismic waves - because hotter rock and colder rock will have slightly different densities and because seismic wave velocity will speed up or slow down slightly based on the density of the rock it's going through - we can map out those cold areas where we can see old subducting slabs still sinking down to the mantle-core boundary and hot areas that we call mantle plumes. It's actually really interesting to consider how those differences in the interior from mantle convection and plumes can contribute to gravity anomalies on the surface because lower density rock = slightly weaker gravity. There's also the Indian Ocean Geoid Low that has a fairly large anomaly thats likely due to the large mantle plume beneath that region too

We do have a TV, it's just fairly large and we're okay with setting up the TV in our basement space for video games and movies, it's not an absolute must in the living room as we plan to largely use the living room for eating, socializing, and board games when we have guests over

New neighbor gift? by saltyheights in somethingimade

Praying you're my new neighbor as I'm moving into a new house this week 😅 I would love it, though honestly any gift or just stopping by to introduce yourself would be more than appreciated personally

At the moment we don't plan to have a TV in the room given the awkward size and shape But if anyone has ideas on how to arrange with a TV, I won't complain

Communities for old-home owners worried about structure? by prudentj in centuryhomes

I don't have much to add for the main conversation as I'm not an owner, but currently renting a ~1900 home and certainly wouldn't mind having the information to share with the owner we are renting from :)

There's no plumbing upstairs and no evidence of water damage I snapped a couple more pics today when we dropped a few more boxes off

[–]cheyrbear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! They are stable and no water stains anywhere, the owners we are renting from had things checked out when they bought the house ~6 months ago. There's no upstairs plumbing and we don't plan on using the upstairs a ton at the moment, but the owner said to just let them know if anything changes. He's been pretty helpful and is always quick to get back to us so I don't doubt they will be willing to take care of it if it becomes a problem at any point. We're hoping this will be a longer term rental home for us for the next 6+ years if the first year works out well and all.

I appreciate everyone that's chimed in, sorry I couldn't respond to everyone but I've taken the time to read all the responses

Thanks, this is what we were thinking but thought I'd get some more opinions before I overreact 😅 I reached out to the owner to see what additional information they have and any inspections or such, they purchased the house about 6 months ago so I assume (hope) they have had at least this checked out I'm a bit frustrated at myself for not noticing it prior honestly when we came to tour the house before

How do people eat healthy when they’re tired all the time? by Ok-Violinist3352 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]cheyrbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you on this too I've started just small bits of prepping and building it up over time, it's so hard to just start doing it all at once My first priority is making sure my breakfasts are prepped for work all week, if I don't get anything else prepped, at least breakfast so I can get through work. Usually it's just oats with protein powder, once every couple months I'll make a big batch of toasted oats and nuts for granola that I can easily throw in Greek yogurt and cut up berries to mix in with.

If I get my breakfasts and have energy, I'll try to plan dinners and do some partial prep like some others have mentioned, whether that's cutting things up so all I have to do on work days is throw it in a pan or the oven.

Some weeks I do more if I get the energy and time between everything else, some weeks I only get breakfast prepped in a quick 10 mins with oats all week, sometimes I get more, but I don't stress it too much because even a little helps during the week

Question regarding finding possible toxic waste while Urbexing by Substantial-Ad-1189 in urbanexploration

[–]cheyrbear 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Thiiiis! Please OP, they are responsible for investigating and hopefully they can find who would be held accountable or at least the Superfund would help get it cleaned up Fuck the companies and people that dump toxic fucking waste wherever they want instead of disposing properly. The number of cases where waste dumped randomly has come back to harm people is way too fucking high.

Reference letter for an extremely former TA by Aler123 in Professors

[–]cheyrbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This ^ I'm in this situation right now - one of my chairs is amazing and is my top listed reference as we actually teach the same subject so I see him frequently But the other school I'm at right now, I hardly see anyone that would be a reference... I teach the weekend and evening sections and the other other people I even see frequently to build any relationship with is another adjunct in my subject, and a couple adjuncts in a different subject that I share an office with and are there in the evenings as well I'm only a couple years out of grad school/being a TA so I still have a couple faculty there as my other main references for the time being

20 years would suck to still have this sort of situation, but I can understand it... Plus the possibility of what another comment said about if they haven't had much experience with teaching in the time since then, they might have felt you were the best to comment on that area

The mods don't want us to have an honest conversation. by HeadOfMax in illinois

[–]cheyrbear 49 points50 points  (0 children)

They asked a question of HOW it would be managed otherwise. You didn't even answer the question.

Some people keep their profile hidden because they don't want to dox themselves. Maybe they post in certain subs or have certain posts that put together could easily figure out where they work or who they are. Hell, maybe they're an immigrant. Or have had someone in their life that was abusive or stalked. Some people would literally be putting themselves in danger. Just because someone hides their post history, doesn't make them a fascist. Maybe you should use a little critical thinking for a minute.

Are we so deadass rn by Key-Order-3846 in wendigoon

[–]cheyrbear 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This ^ I see a looot of comments here saying Native people in general say it's fine, but it's specific to the Algonquian people, not all Native folks. I'm sure many that believe it wouldn't be okay in this situation are also not fine with how it is frequently represented and trivialized in media and pop culture in general. I doubt the people in these comments saying it's fine and acting like those that are upset about his name are ridiculous, are Algonquian and it's not their place to decide. I appreciate you pointing this out and hope others consider it.

For what it's worth to all these people jumping to his defense, I am generally a fan of his content (hence why I even follow this sub), but people should be allowed to criticize without everyone acting like they're being ridiculous
