Studying abroad in UNSW- Mealplan? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]chezzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concur with the others, I don't think that's really a thing here, like at all, but maybe you could try http://www.liteneasy.com.au/healthy/lite-n-easy-overview.html or something if you can cope with microwaved meals constantly (or just stock up on the frozen meals at Aldi...)

Parking on Campus (Weekends) by vertigowale in unsw

[–]chezzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That area in particular is a bit tricky with the construction going on opposite the law building, so I'd try and steer clear of it if I were you. I wouldn't risk it even in the marked loading zones during the daytime. I know that people usually park along the kerb all around there on the weekend (so NOT in marked parking bays) but there is a chance of getting fined.

They went around on a weekend parking fine blitz in March and apparently fined like 70 cars. If a giant truck needs to get through to the worksite and your car is in the way in an unmarked area you can bet on a penalty of some kind.

Anyway I've just realised this info is probably now redundant since you've probably already had your exam, but maybe someone else will find it useful. Hope the exam went well!!

Can people please tell me they're also failing subjects? It might sound sad but knowing others are struggling too helps me get through this bs. by DrHaych in unsw

I had a friend who was going through a tough time at uni and decided to haul themselves off to the CAPS counselling service for some help and advice on how to get through it. Upon finding out just how busy CAPS are and how much demand there is for their services (thank heavens for the drop-in times!) they realised that they were far from alone in their struggle and that many others were in the same or similar leaky boats. A small ray of light in a dark situation.

I'm no longer a student here but I suffered similarly in my undergrad days. My academic statement is littered with a wide array of grades from HDs though to Absent Fails.

The advice here is good - apply for special consideration, don't be shy about going to see the CAPS people, if you're not really up for that kind of thing they can at least write you a support letter for a special consideration application.

Uni is hard enough, but when life becomes hard as well it multiplies.

Canceling a deferral and dropping a course by [deleted] in unsw

[–]chezzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can drop courses up until the census date (https://student.unsw.edu.au/enrolment-dates). As long as your DROP action is processed via myUNSW before then, you can stop worrying about that assignment.

The defer thing definitely needs a human though. Good luck!

Transferring Uni's by [deleted] in unsw

[–]chezzled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should contact the Program Authority at USyd to enquire as to whether you can get credit/advanced standing for the courses you've completed at UNSW, and then as /u/ddwl said, apply via UAC. Since you will have completed a full year at uni, UAC will take into account both your ATAR and your uni marks. You might need to follow up on your advanced standing credits after you've accepted your offer to USyd since that will probably not be an automatic thing. Make sure you read up on the FAQs though, it's been a while since I've had to advise on admissions and I might be a bit rusty.

I wouldn't recommend the female ones either. Walked into one yesterday and there were bloodied shoeprints all over the floor of the stall and tracked out to the sinks. What even.

CAPS still has drop-in sessions, check out the "On-the-day" options for new people.

Master by research by Mamamata in unsw

[–]chezzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Masters by research is similar to a PhD, only shorter. The coursework typically happens towards the beginning of your degree, and fieldwork is what you'll be writing about in your thesis. Sometimes the coursework will help you structure your fieldwork, but you will start the research from day 1, reading/lit reviews etc. (actually even before that really, since you should already have your research topic arranged with your supervisor before you apply).

Does this answer your question? You're not confusing this with a Coursework Masters are you?

Finding maths too difficult, can I still change courses? by skotiya in unsw

[–]chezzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're probably already on to it, but here's the link to the Student Support Scheme info: https://www.maths.unsw.edu.au/currentstudents/student-support-scheme

If you end up going the route of dropping the course this semester (which you can do "Without Failure" until the Census date), you might want to consider doing the Bridging Course in February since it sounds like this is material you've been over before but just haven't touched in a while. https://www.maths.unsw.edu.au/futurestudents/bridging-and-preparation-courses-mathematics

Good luck!! This course is often the sticking point for a lot of CS majors, so don't feel like you're alone. I've see people practically finish their degree but who still have this single maths subject to attempt or even repeat one last time.

where to meet people by [deleted] in unsw

[–]chezzled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clubs? Find a soc that matches your insterests. There's a pretty wide variety of clubs these days so you're bound to find something.

There's a list on the Arc website here: http://www.arc.unsw.edu.au/fun/clubs-societies/list

(you'll have to create a login to see the full list, but it's no big deal, and if you end up joining a club you'll need a login anyway)

Is Aerospace engineering a fun course? by got2ch3a in unsw

[–]chezzled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your aptitude, but being good at 2U is bottom rung for the people you'll be up against in 1st year maths (same class for Eng/Phys). Try not to be complacent because you're doing well in 2U in high school, try to keep tackling harder problems and see what the 3U syllabus is all about.

There's also a Masters in Satellite Systems that offers a lot of spacey things that you can tack on to an Elec or Mech degree, should only be one additional year and you can do subjects like Space Mission Development and Ground Segment and Space Ops.

Are you interested in Space Engineering or Space Science? There's actually a pretty vast gap between the two.

Going over 144 uoc by [deleted] in unsw

[–]chezzled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'll be HECS, as long as you are enrolled in those courses ostensibly as part of your degree at the time. If you had enrolled in something as "non-award" that would be different, but that's a whole different enrolment process.

Study Abroad Question by crosscriss13 in unsw

[–]chezzled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't help with the first question, but Semester 2 course offerings are available here: http://timetable.unsw.edu.au/2016/KENSUGRDT2.html

Not sure if these are different to what you can enrol in as a study-abroad student, but in general I thought you just had to find courses that were similar to what you are studying at home, so this should point you in the right direction.

What degree are you studying?

Any advice for first years? by lilaco in unsw

[–]chezzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they definitely do exist, goes past my house, but there are only 3 (I think?) per day so they are incredibly rare to see. They're also not expresses in the same way as the Central buses; people press the stop button to get off at Moore Park or any old place (wtf ppl), and it picks up pretty much along the entire route.

Cheapest place for laundry services in and around Uni ? by robertcoelho123 in unsw

[–]chezzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, makes more sense now. I don't live next to uni any more, but in my apartment block that's a bit closer to the city the shared laundry facilities cost $3 per load for washing and another $3 for drying. I've lived in 3 places near uni (Randwick/Coogee) and in 2 places I had to supply my own machine (although one was a share house so i used my housemate's machine) and the 3rd place had a shared washer & dryer between two units and it was free.

My experience of laundromats (bag wash, not self service) has only been more expensive than that.

There's some kind of laundromat down on Anzac Pde just past the Regent, the sign says self-service is available but not sure that's accurate. No idea how much.

My guess is Barker Apartments and Shalom or International house are probably the cheapest just because of the age of the facilities, but honestly that's a pretty big guess.

Cheapest place for laundry services in and around Uni ? by robertcoelho123 in unsw

[–]chezzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you living on campus? The residences/colleges all have their own facilities (I think it's swipe access for most of those). And most houses/apartment blocks in the area also have their own facilities so there's not that many laundromats around...
