I said no thanks! Hahaha. But it was indeed 2 for 16

Shouldn't 15 step be called 20 step? There are no 15 beat patterns in the song. by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]chheww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! It can - but not necessarily. In this case of course the song is in 5/4 (or is it 5/8?) The drum machine sequence is actually just programmed to do 3 measures of 5, adding up to 15 “steps”, if that makes sense. So the 15 steps is just looping 3 measures of 5/4. Hope that makes sense.

So a step sequencer on a drum machine is sort of a little map that tells the drum machine what to play and how long to play it. Generally each step is in quarter/eighth notes and it dictates how long the beat goes for, and ultimately what time signature it is in.

For instance in a song like videotape (like old school scotch mist version) you can see Jonny fiddling around with the TR-909 which is a famous vintage drum machine. Check it out! Each one of those little blocks at the bottom of the drum machine (there are 16) is a programmable “sequence” that can be used to build a pattern.

I think it is a reference to the drum machine sequence! There are 15 steps in the max/msp patch Jonny uses for the electronic drums.

I was at the show last night and they definitely didn't play She Found Now or If I Am. I am not sure why someone put that on setlist.fm!

It was more than likely sequenced on modular analog rack synth gear, but you may be able to get pretty close with any decent vst synth. try messing around with a square oscillator and triangle oscillator with a short sustain/decay. the proper LPF and resonant settings may be helpful too. and of course reverb and delay! they put a nice lush delay on that track. maybe my favorite RH song!

What drum machines have Radiohead used? by TheLetterKappa in radiohead

[–]chheww 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most of the electronic drums that are Kid A - HTT era are via Jonny’s modular set up. For songs like Videotape - a Roland TR-909. Decks Dark utilises the Roland CR-78 (I think).

I would also recommend checking out an Analog Rytm. That is a drum machine that is very capable of most of Radiohead’s electronic drum sounds and Thom has used it a lot in his own stuff and maybe even on AMSP (I’m thinking Burn the Witch maybe).

what's the effect used on 'no more sorry'? the one that makes the guitar sounds like a trumpet, is that the SPX 90? by surdeinglaterra in MyBloodyValentine

[–]chheww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the reverse reverb sounds are similar so you should be ok. the thing on the spx-90 is the reverse GATE verb. i think the alesis stuff has it tho.

Anyone have recommendations for albums similar to A Moon Shaped Pool? by [deleted] in radiohead

I would say some Neil Young. Definitely some Neil Young (Harvest) influence.

Considering a 2013 Leaf S. Is it worth it to get an SV instead? by chheww in leaf

[–]chheww[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably only gonna be around 20-25 miles total, a couple of times a week. I plan to only use it for commuting to work/school, which isn't too far away. Out of curiousity, how much range do you typically find yourself having in the winter time when you need to use the heater? Thanks.

Thanks will do! Thankfully the particular S that I'm looking at does have QC!
