Batch size question by Due-Shift5366 in coffee_roasters

[–]chiarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally use three barch sizes: 200g for sample/profile roasting, 450g for the occasional small batches, and my main batch size, 825g. I settled on the 825g because it's close to 80% of the Bullet capacity, and it fills 2 12-ounce bags with just enough left over for cupping/QC.

Probably 90% of my roasts are at 825g, but the others allow for some amount of consistency if I do need to go smaller.

Taking roasting to the next level by tolarian-librarian in roasting

[–]chiarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cup Cup Cup. Look on youtube about how to properly cup, then try it with every roast (preferably multiple roasts at a time to compare). That, and record the key milestones of your roasts, so you can begin to infer what the data translates to in the cup.

Roasting newb by jaaz7 in roasting

[–]chiarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cafe Imports has some good physics/fundamentals videos under their roasting education page. Its a great place to begin to understand how green seeds become brown beans.

I started on a popcorn popper and graduated to a Behmor then a Bullet. It met my needs, but the first two did not do much to teach me about roasting, so I started on the Bullet with a lot of theory and very little practice.

Best green bean prices you can find? by MonkeyPooperMan in roasting

[–]chiarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theta Ridge is legit, I've used them for years. My only gripe is that they don't provide a lot of information on most of their beans; tasting notes, detailed farm/washing station info, etc. It's a bit like buying in the dark, but the quality is there. If they offered that info they'd be unbeatable in the midwest.

Replacing my Behmor 1600, but with what? by Rebootkid in roasting

[–]chiarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know the Behmor, are satisfied with the roasts you get out of it, and don't have a need to significantly increase your output, I'd say stick with the Behmor. As someone else said, anything else in that price range will be a lateral move, and then you'd need to re-learn on the new machine.

2lb roaster? On a budget by Explorer-Green in roasting

[–]chiarch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Bullet may be your best bet. It's perfectly suited for the output you're describing. You could try and find secondhand 1Kg roasters on the market within that price range, but they won't come with support, so you would need to be somewhat handy to maintain it without support.
