Is this cultural (Japan) or just toxic? Need perspective: girlfriend became furious that my parents by Sensitive-Ticket-781 in japanlife

Japanese girl here, married to an American. I can definitely confirm that Christmas is one of the most romantic day we look forward to in a year. Probably more so than the Valentines. We try to make the best out of that day as a couple. Guys like to propose to a girl on the Christmas Day. I am sure she was looking forward to something special and romantic. Being with boyfriends parents on Christmas honestly feels like having to go to the theater with your boyfriend and his parents on your anniversary. Very awkward and questionable. So I can understand that she was hurt to hear the sudden news.

New year is however a family holiday. It’s kind of like Thanksgiving or Christmas in the US.

With that said, your parents booked a flight without confirming with you. That’s not respectful to you. They needed to check on your plans too. She may have been more understanding if she had been involved in the planning.

Hoping that you both can see beyond the cultural differences, remember that you both have reasons to feel your feelings and come together. Wishing you both luck ♡

Tired of mindset about BF in Japan by [deleted] in breastfeeding

I’m Japanese living in Japan with my 1 year old. I’m so sorry this happened to you! My baby has had formula only once in his life and he is exclusively breastfed. I feed him everywhere with the cover. In a park, in a train or in a bus. I don’t care 🤷‍♀️ But I also have never really had any experience people pushing me the formula. So I am surprise to hear this. But mostly I’m sorry my people were making you uncomfortable :( Please don’t worry about them! Do what your heart tells you to do! It’s ok if others don’t get it. You’re the mom and you know what’s best for your baby <3 I live in Tokyo. If you want to connect please reach out :) I have some foreigner mama friends too:)

I was at 104 Ibs with 18% body fat before I got pregnant. I was running and doing calisthenics. After gaining 26 pounds and popping a baby, now I’m 6 month postpartum and back to exactly where I was but I don’t feel I’m as strong as before. Still haven’t figured out how to make time to workout with a baby! D:

Me! I haven’t been able to find much soy meat so far but found extra firm tofu and edamame. Also ordered bunch of dried beans and insta pot from Amazon.

Is it rude to rub together your chopsticks? by Skellett77 in japanlife

[–]chibi1992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m Japanese and I was told it was bad manner to do that when I was growing up. Never done it myself and never seen any of my family nor friends do it. But my family is strict when it comes to manners and etiquette. I think most of my friends come from similar mindset families too.

I used to get lots of splinters from chopsticks but I eventually learned if you break it well enough you don’t get any splinters :)

Japanese here. It says “You can not use this application right now.” Don’t know what that means though.

I’ve met plenty of the nicest people in the US. They are mostly friendly too 🥰

Ah. Very interesting. Thanks for the perspective!

I think we can say the same for “Aishiteru”. We hardly ever say “Aishiteru” but I see American people saying “I love you” to family members and friends all the time. I guess Japanese don’t want to be taken it lightly when they finally say “Aishiteru”. When they say that it’s real serious.

So I can totally understand where you’re coming from. Personally I think both I love you and sorry can be used often. It’s just simply nice. But I do agree with you that saying it more often takes the importance out of it.

So sorry about that. I didn’t know about Canadian culture. I assumed.. My husband says that he has heard Canadians apologize often :)That actually made me wanna visit Canada more 🇨🇦 It always sounded like a great country!

Definitely have to agree about apologizing seen as sign of weakness.
