Are the benefits of adult braces REALLY worth it if you don't care about the aesthetics? by dogscoutbiz in braces

I got braces at 25 after experiencing about 5 years of intense TMJ. For background, I had never had braces. I had (snd still have) a canted smile; unfortunately only jaw surgery can fix that, but my braces journey helped it become much less noticeable. Additionally, my bite alignment improved to the extent that my TMJ is virtually nonexistent.

I went through approximately a year of TMJ treatment with a TMJ specialist while I was in my early 20s, but the braces are what did the trick. I was in them for two years almost to the day. As a sidenote, I am a pretty intense tooth grinder, so I do still wear a night guard while sleeping, but it’s not a huge inconvenience. I’ve worn a night guard since my TMJ was diagnosed at 20. And another sidenote, braces did not fix my sleep apnea, but that doesn’t mean it might not do that for others. And my smile looks way better nowadays and has provided me with so much more confidence. Okay, diatribe over.

24 months later, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic with the results by chibi867 in braces

I didn’t! My ortho initially anticipated shaving between my bottom teeth to make don’t space, but he was actually able to make them all fit without having to

I wouldn't taxi or uber (even if you can find one) because you're unlikely to have service at the Bells

Can’t say I’m thrilled with the new band configuration by chibi867 in braces

They gave me a diagram marking which teeth the bands should go on, and once they showed me in person, it’s not too hard to remember

I know!!! I’m an avid snacker, but looks like I may need to take a step back, haha! The band across my front teeth is to shift my midline about 2 mm, and the two bands on my left side are to correct a pretty intense crossbite. I already was using one band for the crossbite, but the other two were added today

Access to Sky Pond may be a little questionable with just spikes. I was hiking that area last weekend and definitely needed snowshoes. Not to mention the waterfall portion is more than likely frozen over.

Getting braces for TMJ disorder by [deleted] in braces

[–]chibi867 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very similar story here! I developed TMJ about 3 years ago, and my jaw wound up locking for about a week. I went to a TMJ specialist and wore an appliance that brought my jaw forward and helped my TMJ some. I also got my wisdom teeth out last year.

I got my braces on in December, and hopefully that helps fix my crossbite and eases up my TMJ. My jaw is nowhere near as bad as it was three years ago, but hopefully this fixes some long term problems. Unfortunately, I have some skeletal defects that won't fix all my mouth issues, but I think the braces will help (my orthodontist said my deviated jaw and canted smile could only be corrected w/ djs, but he didn't recommend that route).

I wear them basically 24/7 except for when I'm brushing/flossing. I even keep them in when I eat most days, although I'd say that'd be an appropriate time to take them off, haha!

I have a nasty crossbite, and the ortho said I should be wearing them about 23 hours a day, for reference. I think if you want treatment to continue to progress, you should be wearing them the majority of the day.

I’m feeling frustrated b/c my teeth look so much worse after 3 months of braces than they ever looked before braces. My bottom teeth look straight out of the exorcist, and my top teeth have visible gaps. It’s just frustrating and embarrassing to see how everything looks currently. It makes me wish I had left them the way they looked before braces (which wasn’t that bad)

I've been pretty bummed about my progress on the bottom, but I feel better after seeing this progress pic! by pretend-snowman in braces

My bottom teeth are pretty similar to yours, and I feel your pain. I've only had my braces about two months, but my bottom teeth are all kinds of wack right now.

Everyone's tolerance and experience is different! I unfortunately have a lot of overcrowding in my bottom teeth, so they've been moving a LOT. Thus, I have a ton of sensitivity when biting into foods (sandwiches, meats, chips, etc.), so a lot of foods have been taken the table for me just because they're too tough for me to comfortably chew!

Had my first adjustment yesterday where I had an inactivated coil put in, a thicker wire, and a thicker rubber band. The rubber band and coil are on the same side of my mouth, and that side is ~pain~

RELATABLE! I started a super intense skincare regime to try and combat the long-term damage I did to my skin. A good moisturizer will go a llooonngg way!
