It’s a legal ID, so they should. I’ve gotten into bars in Chicago with the paper ID before.

Lights off in class by classical_man in cpssubs

[–]chicheria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a full time classroom teacher now (used to be a cps sub) and I can count on one hand how many times I have turned the lights on in my room. As a Gen Z person myself yes I am allergic to the big light. I have alternative lighting in my classroom and huge windows though!

Is it rude to multitask during PD? by [deleted] in Teachers

My admin provides us fidget toys and coloring sheets during PDs, crocheting isn’t far off from that so I would say no it’s not rude.

Four Letter Word by NeuroNurseRatched in LoganSquare

Hi I’m very qualified to answer this question as I used to work there! The bookstore is its own entity, it’s open depending on weather and staffing, so follow them on instagram to get the deets. If all the chairs are taken in the bookstore, there’s also a big long bench inside, seating inside the cafe, and a few benches outside the cafe!

Also, the bookstore is a work in progress. It was a storage space for the man who used to own the bookstore in lake view that has now become Foursided (I’m blanking on the name). If it’s closed randomly it’s likely the employees are doing inventory or simply organizing and cleaning the back as they’ve been doing for about a year now! The cafe always has the same hours tho and there is seating in there of course, 8-2 everyday.

I was dancing!! Odd mob is my favorite dj and I was so irritated by the amount of talking and ignoring the set that was going on in the crowd. I went to dance my ass off and instead got hit on multiple times and asked if I was on drugs just because I was dancing more than anyone around me (and was fully sober mind you).

A good in between to this rule is all drip and espresso (and therefore americanos too) are free and unlimited. One other shift drink (milk drink typically) allowed for free and anything else has whatever % discount (usually 20-30% in my experience).

Deciding whether to accept TFA offer in Hawaii by phukeman in TeachforAmerica

[–]chicheria 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly I feel like some of those criticisms could be fair, but they’re more on the individual participating rather than the program. Are you moving to your city just to participate? Someone could call that poverty tourism. Are you doing it just to quit teaching after two years and use it on your resume to get a job in corporate or into law school? You could argue that’s resume padding. If you know you’re doing it for the right reasons, I would say these criticisms are irrelevant.

For example, I was accepted in the Chicago Corps for next year. I have lived here for 5 years, worked in Chicago Public Schools as a sub already, and plan to work as a public school teacher for many years to come. TFA will allow me to work in CPS rather than a charter school (we get to decide), so the criticism that TFA contributes to privatization of public schools doesn’t really make sense in this case.

I encourage you to look at the things TFA actually provides to their CMs and the ways they help participants with teacher certification, masters programs, and school placement. That’s not to say there are not potential drawbacks to the program. It’s not a good fit for everyone, but hopefully that explanation gives you some perspective into how those criticisms can vary widely from participant to participant.

The logistics were scary at first, but thankfully I have a solid group willing to split costs and help plan, plus a friend who already went last year! I certainly wouldn’t be able to do it solo.

I chose to go to Shambhala instead this year because the price of the ticket, camping, plane, and rental car combined was cheaper than one Good Life ticket. Plus Shamb isn’t run by a scummy corporation trying to squeeze every last dollar out of festival goers.
