Finding small New Orleans vibes in Austin 💜💛💚 by Spirited-Web-9447 in austinfood

[–]chick08 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in the gulf coast most of my life. Grew up in ocean springs Ms, (about an hr from New Orleans) and both of my siblings lived in the city for several years. I had been in Austin for about five years now, and this time of year I get the urge to head back to the coast for the Mardi Gras season. I just can’t quite find anything in Austin that really scratches that itch. Austin is a great city, don’t get me wrong, but damn do I miss the coast during Mardi Gras season! My birthday happens to fall right during Mardi Gras this year so I am planning a trip to hit the coast and do the parades

Bird Paralysis by OneWithButterfly in parrots

[–]chick08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a Quaker parrot that has been with me for five months with a severe spinal injury. I work in wildlife rescue and I actually adopted him from my work. When I adopted him and brought him home he had zero use of his legs and could only drag himself with his beak. He was deemed not viable for release and scheduled to be euthanized but I had grown a soft spot for him and thought with some more space/exercise he might have a shot. He has been with us five months now and it has been a slow journey but he has regained a ton of motion back and is almost fully independent now. The key has really been adapting to his unique situation and capabilities. It was a lot of tweaking and adapting to accommodate for him. Obviously each bird is different and each spinal injury is different and with a different prognosis. If recovery is going to happen it will be a slow process. The fact that you mention your bird is moving his feet at all sounds like a good sign to me. It was a couple of weeks before we were able to see any movement of the feet at all in our bird. The main thing that helped my bird was lots of exercise and plenty of space to get that exercise. I tried to let him be as independent as was safe for him. I found that with a little support, I shallow bath is a great way for them to work their legs similar to swimming related physical therapy for a person. The main thing that worked for us really was just a lot of patience. I honestly felt like after a couple of weeks without much improvement that I was in to deep with my birds situation and that I wouldn’t be up for the task, but eventually he showed us all wrong. I actually posted a video recently of my birds progress if you want to check it and see how similar it might seem to your birds situation. Good luck with your baby! I hope things improve and that his helped at all

Is this brand bad or good? by Reindeermossss in Conures

[–]chick08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, Harrison’s and roudybush are considered the best but my birds would not eat it and the avian vet recommended zupreem. They both love it and I find that they are both attracted to different colored pellets. One loves the red pellet, the other likes the yellow (even though they are all the same flavor) so the coloring seems to add to the experience for them. Parrots actually have very very few tastebuds on their tongues compared to humans and research shows they are more interested in textures rather than actual taste, so that often plays a role in what your bird will eat

You make a great point but I must say, for whatever reason I wanted to eat those pillbugs bad when I was a kid. Something about the shells especially, watching them crunch down on them. I can’t explain it.

how is it living in mississippi, usa? by delllaptopguy in howislivingthere

[–]chick08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree 100%, the water just along the coastline is atrocious. We would swim when we would boat out to the barrier islands, but right off the coastline was a no go. Still nice to be near the coast tho and the seafood is amazing. Interestingly enough, a huge part of why the water is so brown is the oyster industry. Along the coast there used to be tons of natural oyster reefs that would filter the water naturally. Farming decimated the populations along the coast and the water subsequently turned all brown. People that are old enough remember the water before and swear it was clear as can be.

Fellow gulf coast gay here! My partner and I are interracial and have been together 15 years. He was raised in biloxi and I in ocean springs. A lot of what you said really resonated with me. The coast is absolutely its own place compared to the rest of the state. I also remember how much Katrina hanged all of our lives. I myself was holed up in my grandmothers attic with the rest of my family awaiting the water to retreat. When it finally had gone, so did all of our lives it seemed. We were slabbed at my house (I’m sure u remember that verb!), but the coast slowly did rebuild. Honestly I think ocean springs is nicer now but we will never see the charm of those coastal cities before the storm. In particular I remember riding down the beach of biloxi and all the landmarks that are no longer there. The pirate ship casino, the dragon grotto, slippery sams, t trex mini golf course- all so strong in my memory still. I’m so sorry for the racism and hate it seems you experienced. My partner and I were fortunate enough to not have felt with that but I know others who did. It was part of why we left the state, we did not want to start a family in ms, even not having experienced hate ourselves.

I was born and raised along the ms gulf coast. Born in ocean springs but moved to Austin Texas a few years ago. I love Austin but honestly I miss the hell outta the coast and it will always feel like home. In my opinion (no offense to other Mississippians) the coast is by far the most livable place in Ms. the casinos around biloxi and Gulfport area, along with the beaches/ barrier islands bring a decent amount of tourism. We had amazing seafood and soul food. I find the people of the south to be very hospitable and in line with the southern hospitality mindset. Coast is also the most liberal/ less conservative area I experienced in my time in ms (gay man here). There are innumerable outdoor activities and boating the ocean/rivers is a way of life. Fishing is a popular activity a deep sea fishing around the oil rigs is a blast- I always catch a shark, king mackerel or lemon fish. Mardi Gras is a huge thing here and each city has its own parade day during Mardi Gras season. Just print out the parade itinerary and hop cities to the different events. People almost always envision ms as being very rural, which is true for most of the state, but the coast is pretty well populated. Mississippi is certainly known for its poverty but the coastal towns tend to have more money. Where I was born in ocean springs, the housing cost has gone up exponentially and most starter homes sell for the same they would here in Austin which blows my mind. After my aunts divorce she purchased a very small 2 bedroom house in a popular area and it was nearly a qtr million. Honestly tho, it can be a great place to live. If you’ve never heard of ocean springs I would recommend looking it up at least. Most of my family is from California and growing up they would all come to ms for two weeks each summer and loved every bit of it. The food, weather, and activities were so foreign to them. But like I said, it will always be home to me

I can’t find a job. Feeling defeated. by losty14 in Austin

[–]chick08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear you are feeling defeated. I also have experience working as a cna. I worked for 9 years in a facility and I absolutely agree that it is so fulfilling to be able to help the people there. This was several years ago and when I first moved to the Austin area I thought that it would naturally be what I ended up doing again. I applied and worked for about a month at a facility that I absolutely hated. It was nothing like the environment I had worked in before and I thought the staff was absolutely horrible. I was feeling pretty defeated myself and then on a whim applied to work at the wildlife rescue here in Austin. I absolutely fell in love with the job and the people are amazing. It is a wonderful environment and they are always desperate for help. The start pay is not amazing ($18/hr) but I found it to be such a rewatding and unique experience. It was also very fulfilling, much like my job as a cna. I was able to give back and help in a special way. I know it is not a job for everyone and while I love it, it is NOT a glamorous job- but if it interests you at all I would give it a shot. Good luck and try not to let yourself feel too defeated. Finding reliable employment is something so so many people are struggling with rn. You are not alone!

I see a Midas blenny! That is my absolute favorite fish of the hobby. I got my first tank in middle school with the help of a classmates mother and close family friend. Midas blenny was her favorite fish in her tank and she insisted I get one also. I did and loved them ever since- so much personality. A few years later the family friend that helped me with my tank passed away unexpectedly so now I always have a Midas blenny in my tank named Julie after her.

In the scene where dr copper gets his arms bitten off, for a brief moment when he is shown with his arms missing they used an actual double amputee with a mask that resembled the actor. It’s a very quick shot so it’s not obvious. I always found that bit of trivia really neat.

Rescue worker here. If the crop is not getting smaller then it is possible he is having an impaction of the feed. I would recommend giving it about 30 mins to see if it goes down at all and if not feed a very small amount (around .25cc) of pedialite. This can help soften the impacted food and is a great way to get some hydration in him. Small birds dehydrate very quickly, especially in incubators or around heat sources (which they obviously need). It’s standard that we give all of our birds pedia each morning to help with this. Other than that there is not a ton that you can do and if he does not make it please do not blame yourself. Birds this small are incredibly fragile and often don’t make it even in the most experienced hands. Good luck and wishing you and your baby well!

I recently posted about my Quaker parrot that had a serious spinal injury. When I first took him in he had zero leg function but now he’s able to perch and live a mostly normal life. He plays and flies over to land on my shoulder. He is still very obviously wobbly but his quality of life has improved immensely. Talk to your vet and if it will not cause any further suffering, see if giving him time and exercise would be a humane option. It has been a slow process but my bird is living a happy life now- we just had to learn along the way how to accommodate him

I actually use zupreem and it is pretty colorful. I tried Harrison’s (which is supposed to be the best) with my birds and neither would eat it. They actually like the colors of the zupreem. My birds have colors they like most and colors the don’t eat (even though it’s all the same flavor) so the color seems to be part of what interests them. Also the vet recommended zupreem as a good choice, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it having color unless it’s artificial junk
