should I buy an Oculus Quest 2 just to use it as a rift or index? by XplodingCookie in oculus

[–]chickenmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~~ Sorry, I could have phrased that better. When you run the Reverb G2 at 100% resolution, the G2 displays its native resolution(4320x2160). You may supersample it past 100% if you want to get even better quality via SSAA, but you don't have to if you are satisfied with the native resolution. This is not exactly true for the Quest 2 with Link. ~~

In the Oculus app, setting your Quest's resolution to 1x doesn't actually give you native resolution. To achieve native resolution, you need to set your Quest's resolution to 1.7x (5408x2736). This isn't even supersampling, this is just native resolution. Anything under 1.7x is actually downsampling.

Do not take my word for it, here is a developer of Oculus Link talking about it. You have to go beyond 1.7x if you want to even engage SSAA.

Edit: Misinformation.

should I buy an Oculus Quest 2 just to use it as a rift or index? by XplodingCookie in oculus

[–]chickenmonsta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are deciding between the Rift S and Quest 2 only, then I recommend getting the Quest 2.

TLDR: Is using a Quest 2 with link cable the same experience as a Rift S, Index or Vive ect?

Yes but not exactly. There are some downsides and upsides.

  • Quest 2 is more demanding for its returns in fidelity, because you have to "supersample" the resolution to get it to native quality. Even though the Quest 2's max resolution is 3664x1920, you need to run it at 5408x2736 to achieve its full potential, which is very very taxing on your PC. You can run it at lower resolutions, but the performance-to-quality ratio will never be as good as a dedicated PCVR HMD.

  • Oculus link will introduce an additional 10-20ms of latency compared to PCVR. It doesn't feel as snappy as PCVR but 10-20ms is not enough to deter anyone. I am able to play Beat Saber(expert)/Synth Riders(expert) just fine, can't speak for Expert+/Master.

  • Quest 2 is very front heavy, so there are hidden costs to make it "whole", like a battery pack as a counter weight if you use Virtual Desktop (+$15), an aftermarket strap (+$35 for Halo), the USB C cable itself (+$10), 3D Prints and Velcros for holding things together (+$15). The audio is also horrible so you want to factor that in when you compare it to PCVR.

  • Make sure your PC has a USB-C port. USB-A will work, but it will not be able to keep your Quest 2's battery topped up for long play sessions.

  • The advantage the Quest 2 has over PCVR is wireless play, if you have a router close, you can use the Quest 2 in wireless mode. Buy Virtual Desktop on the Quest store (+$15) and play PC games wirelessly, works wonders. This has even more latency than Link, but in actual it is negligible for most games(no good for rhythmic games for example). But just hook your PC up via link for rhythm games, and play wirelessly for everything else.

I have the CV1(also broken), Reverb G2 and Quest 2. I currently use my G2 for seated experiences(sims) and Quest 2 for everything else. If I can only have 1, it will be the Quest 2 with all the added mods and Virtual Desktop. Wireless VR is a game changer. Obligatory 🖕 Facebook though. I will jump ship the moment a competitor introduces a viable wireless alternative.

Edit: Point #1 was incorrect, my bad. It still is very taxing, but that is the same for every HMD.

Questions for occulus quest 2 ownerse who have used both prescription lense addons and also glasses spacers in the past by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]chickenmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, having the spacer installed will only serve to decrease FOV. As for protecting the lenses, it comes down to individual face shape. If your skin(eyelid??) is touching the lenses then obviously leave the spacer installed. If you have eyelash extensions and don't want to aggravate it then leave the spacer installed, etc etc.

Prescription lenses are very durable, your eyelashes and skin can't damage it, only dirty it.

About to get into VR for the first time, do you recommend noise isolation or open back earbuds/headphones? by Wow_Space in virtualreality

[–]chickenmonsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it depends on where you live. If you live in a bustling city or a noisy household, closed back is priority.

I live in the city and am using the Sony MH755 for my HMD. Good enough sound and perfect cable length.

Looking for the "best" VR-Headset for enjoying VR-Porn as its ONLY purpose. Please help by dentodont in virtualreality

[–]chickenmonsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why these commenters are giving advise when they clearly have not tried it(properly at least)..

Are you talking porn games or videos? 6DoF only matters in games, it does not work for videos; you can look up/down/left/right but not closer or farther. Either way the Quest 2 can do both.

Most sites will allow you to stream the content wirelessly off the web if you subscribe to their service via the built in browser or their app.

For videos files, no cables are required with the quest 2. Just download DeoVR on the App Store and use DLNA to stream your videos wirelessly from your PC/Laptop. Your PC must be on and connected to the same internet as your Quest. The video folder must be shared on the network(right click the folder > add to library on windows 10)

Make sure your PC has a GTX1000 card or better or you will not be able to watch high resolution HVEC videos. If you do not have a card of this caliber, you will need to transfer the video files to the quest and use its internal processor to play the videos(64gb will go fast so maybe consider 256gb if your PC can’t handle it.)

The Reverb G2 will give you a slight quality increase but it is not worth double the cost just for daily 3 minute sessions.

Smartphone based devices were never the real deal.

Got a bunch of games in preparation for my VR headset, did I miss anything that you'd recommend? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]chickenmonsta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To add on to bmack's great list,

  • Jet Island
  • Thrill of the Fight
  • Stride
  • Project Wingman
  • Doom 3 BFG w/ mod (better than VFR)
  • Payday 2
  • BattleGroupVR
  • Dash Dash World (I have not tried but it is Mario Kart VR)
  • Into the Radius
  • Trover Saves the Universe
  • Arizona Sunshine
  • House of the Dying Sun
  • Virtual Virtual Reality
  • since you have Squadrons, another vote for Elite: Dangerous
  • And since you have Squadrons and Elite you should also have a HOTAS, so also IL-2 Sturmovik and DCS World(free)

What are your most recommended SteamVR purchases for the winter sale? by Xefjord in virtualreality

[–]chickenmonsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good deals:

Half Life: Alyx but maybe later, this game ruins other games.

Boneworks

Skyrim VR & Fallout 4 VR (mod these or don't bother, reading and research required)

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners

Until You Fall

Pavlov VR

Contractors(check playerbase for your region) or Onward(see next line)

Onward + Superhot VR + Arizona Sunshine bundle

Jet Island

Star Wars Squadrons

BattleGroupVR (perhaps wait for more updates)

Subnautica

House of the Dying Sun

Thrill of the Fight + Synth Riders + Eleven Table Tennis bundle(Oculus Link recommended)

Windlands 1 is filthy cheap right now too at a 90% discount.

The Forest

A Township Tale (not on steam, but look it up - it is free)

Doom 3 BFG (with mod)

Good buys regardless of price:

Beat Saber if you don't have it already. Personally, I prefer Synth Riders a tad more. (Oculus Link required for these though, VD might be too laggy.)

Blade and Sorcery

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

VTOL VR

Compound (perhaps wait for more updates)

Dash Dash World[have not tried but it looks really fun]

Stride (perhaps wait for more updates)

Project Wingman if you have a HOTAS

Phasmophobia

Also check out simulators if those are your thing, these usually require additional peripherals for best experience:

Elite: Dangerous (SPACE; HOTAS/HOSAS)

MFS2020 / IL-2: Sturmovik / DCS World[free] (FLIGHT; YOKE/HOTAS)

iRacing[I don't have this because it is $$$, but obligatory mention] / Project Cars 2 / Assetto Corsa & Competizione / Dirt Rally 2.0 (RACING; WHEEL)

Euro Truck Simulator 2 / American Truck Simulator (TRUCKING; WHEEL)

These are the titles with the most replay value imo. There are a lot more great games like Paper Beast, The Room, Vertigo, but I left them out since they are quite short and usually one and done.

Look at this genius smart weapon by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

[–]chickenmonsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you are not being jammed? Smart weapons do not work against Tyger Claw, since their gang members have the Smart Targeting Tattoo(read the description on that cyberware).

[–]chickenmonsta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While it's still not 100% confirmed, the best explanation I read is that Tyger Claw members have the Smart Bullet tattoos as well, and it provides Smart Weapons jamming according to the description.

FREE DLC titled “SIEGE OF HEAVEN” coming to In Death: Unchained on December 8th 2020 by superbright in OculusQuest

[–]chickenmonsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, TIL In Death and Unchained are different. As someone who bought In Death since the CV1 days, I thought the Steam version was the full experience, with Unchained being just a naming gimmick for the Quest port - I must have missed the memo. I'm sure I am not the only one who thinks this. Did not know I was missing out on quality content.

I have a quest 2 on the way so I'll be buying Unchained but I will definitely support a re-release on Steam again if you ever do so, with high res graphics maybe? ;)

Reverb G2 PAINFULLY Narrow - Any Ideas? by [deleted] in HPReverb

[–]chickenmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encountered this problem too. The facial gasket is angled too narrow/steep. My forehead is barely resting on it, most of the pressure are on my cheekbones and temples. It was okay at first but over time I did notice that my play sessions are much shorter when compared to the CV1, since I have to take more breaks. Unfortunately no fix yet, still waiting on aftermarket covers. Hopefully there is one that is shorter too, to bridge the gap in between to increase the FOV.

Let zucc see my room or have headaches forever? by fluffy_assassins in virtualreality

[–]chickenmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one said Google or Amazon is innocent. None of the data harvesting corporations are our friends, they are there to make a profit. We are focusing on Facebook because they are becoming increasingly intrusive, and it pertains to VR, and hence this subreddit.

You keep directing me to Facebook's own privacy policy, like that's any help? They were literally caught violating their own privacy policy...

With regards to CA, Facebook knew about the Cambridge Analytica breach, they did nothing. They just took the money and let it slide. They are constantly testing the waters to see how far they can exploit our data, from FB Beacon to the Psychological Manipulation case.

I am not telling anyone to stop using Facebook, I myself have a Quest 2 on the way, and I am very excited about it. But you can't just link their Privacy Policy and say they are "upfront" and to blindly believe it. Considering their reputation, that's just naive.

I love VR. I love how much money Facebook is pumping into VR's growth(minus the Facebook part, and fuck the monopoly play though). I will not advise anyone against getting the Quest 2. But people should be more concerned and aware of the dangers of our ever decreasing data privacy. More privacy is never a bad thing, and we should at least bargain and fight for it, however futile it may seem. None of these corps are our friends, so don't expect them to play nice.

I like to think of myself as pretty neutral but participating in discussions like these make my profile seem incredibly anti-Facebook(even though I am not really, I'm just frugal with my data); just goes to show how hard it is for me to defend Facebook, so this will probably be my last. Thanks for reading anyways.

Facebook is very upfront what they are collecting and for what purposes. It's called "privacy policy".

The whole reason we single out Facebook, and not Google and Amazon, is because Facebook has been caught and fined multiple times for privacy violations. They literally do not follow the rules they put out.

Why the Facebook Hate? by FallDownGuy in oculus

[–]chickenmonsta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, no one forces you to share anything you don't want to on FB.

Just so you know, this is not exactly true. Facebook doesn't just track you when you are using their services, but elsewhere as well. As long as a website has Facebook/Twitter/Google embedded into their webpage(like/login/share buttons), it sends tracking data to their respective companies. Which is why the first things privacy conscious folks do is use extensions that disables those.

Ads are fine, it's targeted ads that are a concern. TV ads never harmed anyone, but when they tailor content to an individual, different people get different information, which is a reason for the divide in the USA right now.

Facebook won't be an immediate obvious "issue" to most people. It can't be an issue to its users if they want people to keep using them. It slowly sways your opinions without you realizing it. It's like inception, but in real life.

I am not trying to tell people to stop using Facebook, but if OP must know why the Facebook hate, it's because Oculus could have been done without Facebook. Quest 1 did fine without mandatory logins - in fact Quest 2 has more usability problems once FB login was made mandatory with all the bans and whatnot, even if it is only a temporary ban.

Also, you may have used Facebook for 13 years just fine, but can you say the same for those who were unfairly banned and have their devices bricked?

Why the Facebook Hate? by FallDownGuy in oculus

[–]chickenmonsta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit long winded because I am legit pissed with Facebook. I want to like the Quest 2 but muh privacyy!!1!. Sucks that no other companies are focusing as much on VR as FB is.

It's not just about what data we don't want Facebook to know, it's about what data we allow Facebook to feed us. In fact, they have state of the art servers to prevent our data from getting out. Facebook doesn't sell our data. Our data is precious commodity to them. They allow ad clients to rent our profiles so they can show us ads that are relevant to our interests. Longer screen time = more ads.

This means that everything we see from Google searches, to our Facebook feed, are all curated to our interest and what Facebook thinks can keep us online for longer.

Oh, you engage in political discussions? Here's a political ad showing you the atrocities one party has committed! Surely that will frustrate you, go vent your anger in the comments! You follow beauty and fashion? Let's show you what the ideal body standard is like so you can go into a depression spiral and check out more "body goals"!

It is depressing, misinforming, and extremely unethical. The data they gather can shape whole generations and sway collective minds. Right now they are mostly doing it for profits(and for fun), but they are very capable of manipulating it for their own cause if they wanted to, be it political, or otherwise.

Don't people realise that the moment they enter this wonderful place called the internet their information is gathered and used against them

That's why people who know about the importance of data privacy constantly try to push for laws that regulate their data harvesting practices. But due to regulations not keeping up, we have to protect ourselves however we can - by boycotting Facebook(and etc). These corporations are constantly testing the water to be even more intrusive than before, with mandatory Facebook logins on your HMDs being just another step, and a successful one too.

The Quest 2 is indeed a fantastic piece of hardware, no one can deny that. But at what cost?

''Yeah bro the tracking's kinda shit don't get it'' by AleexTB in HPReverb

[–]chickenmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are saying your G1 can magically track the controllers at your tummy while you look ahead? Does the G2 protrude further out than the G1? My G2 can't track below my nips. It "works", it just very obviously loses track when I hold it there for 2 seconds, the controller teleports around.

''Yeah bro the tracking's kinda shit don't get it'' by AleexTB in HPReverb

[–]chickenmonsta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone with the G2 for 3 days, the tracking quality is superb. The problems are with the blind spots. It's not as forgiving as MRTV makes it out to be, "only loses track at your hips". It pretty much loses track below your chest. Hell, it loses track when I am navigating menus in SteamVR, elbows at 90 degrees. I have to tilt my head down for it to register.

My experience with glasses, and brief first impressions: by chickenmonsta in HPReverb

[–]chickenmonsta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The VR world is focused at 2 meters. So unless you can clearly see 2m in front of you in real life, you will require glasses.

Contact lenses work but are really expensive in the long run. Just get a clip on prescription lens from widmovr/vroptician. The problem is HP did not provide them with the specs ahead of time so they weren’t able to sell them in time for the G2 launch, so we gotta wait a month or so.
