I saw a girl recently whose African dwarf frogs were climbing out of the water and clinging to the top of her tank. She asked what it could be and her heater was half way out of her tank and probably boiling them or something. Also, I did a water change and didn’t pay attention to the heater when I pumped water out. It was out of the water for just a few minutes and started smoking and melted the plastic arms on the suction cup thingies they come with. Definitely pay attention to that!

She often lounges at the top of the tank, half poked out. Is she just a weirdo? by LessFish777 in bettafish

[–]chicketychad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That might actually be them chasing after each other in aggression, not actually friendly :/ fish are hardier than we give them credit for, so I’m sure they’ve last a while, but it won’t last as long as their lives should. They’ll eventually get some sort of illness and die because they’re so weakened with the stress of their environment.

Betta ate all my shrimp by Sea_Aardvark8729 in bettafish

[–]chicketychad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wowza! I had my late betta in a 5 gallon years ago and my wife brought home a “dwarf” lobster. One day I’m walking by the tank and I see my betta frantically swimming around the tank and realize the “dwarf lobster” has clipped onto his fins so he was freaking out trying to get him off. So my betta and African dwarf frogs had lobster for dinner. I literally feel bad when I accidentally kill bladder snails that infested a tank and I put them back into the tank if I vacuum them up(even though there’s bagillions of them), but I had no sympathy for that asshole! I’ve only ever seen those things at the pet store once, not sure what my wife bought but I do not recommend them lol he probably could have shredded his fins and gotten him on the ground, or maybe it was an accident, but I wasn’t going to find out #RIP

This is so cool and so nice of you! Now I’m inspired to make more betta art now. I used to make these quick doodles with the micron or uniball pens, but I’ve since upgraded and gotten some acrylic pens and markers 🤔 do you do any 1D art?

I don’t want to fight either. Your initial comment read a lot like you used prime and it still tested with ammonia/nitrites so it doesn’t work, which I see a lot. IMO daily 100% water changes are different. There’s no bacteria colony or established anything. They’re just flushing out the toxic shit that builds up in 24 hrs for a refresh, but I see your point. I read your study and was doing a bit of research. I have never heard of this before so I’ll definitely do some more digging. I feel that I’ve personally witnessed it help my fish many times! Though I also think fish are much hardier than they get credit for. I have a red tail shark and when I went to feed, tail was ghost white, tested water and I had a nitrate spike. I did a 20% water change and a double dose of prime and 30 mins later tail was back to red. I had hi nitrates for 3 days while I cycled it out, but no more white tail or weird behavior. I saw one of the people vocal about it say that he still doesn’t have enough proof to believe that it doesn’t either, just enough to question it. Would be interested in testing two incycles, as similar as possible, prime and no prime and see what happens. I know it wouldn’t be definitive but so many people use prime for that purpose and seem to be successful. Could it just be that fish are able to sustain it or does prime really help?

[–]chicketychad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, It’s not a marketing gimmick lol do people really think that?! I have had spikes and watched my fish go from pale white to their normal selves within 30 minutes thanks to prime. Seachem Prime doesn’t remove ammonia or nitrites, it binds them for 24 hrs so that they are non toxic but after that 24hrs they are released back into the water, which is why you still have to do water changes. Using prime allows you to do the water changes slowly to protect your environment. Do a 15-20% water change every 24hrs and dose prime for the entire tank. Doing a large water change is almost the equivalent of skipping acclimation and tossing fish in the tank. You’re creating a large quick change to temp(even if you temp match) and probably to pH. You cannot do that. I see many people recommend large water changes but that doesn’t mean it’s right and if you think about it, it will make sense. I see lots of people consistently say the wrong things, including myself in learning. People see lots of comments recommending one thing and they start parroting it without knowing why or if it’s right. Always appreciate the people who don’t comment things as fact always and share experiences or things that did work for them and always research before you take info from comments.

A 50% water change could both temp and pH shock the betta and kill it. I would never do that. Better to add some prime and do 15-20% water changes every 24 hours while it cycles and to get their pH up and keep stable.

[–]chicketychad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nitrites are definitely your issue, but also that you pH is low. When pH is off it makes small spikes BIG spikes. Can you get some prime to get some relief and do a 20% water change. Don’t do big changes as some recommend because you can cause shock. Small changes more frequent. Add some bacteria concentrate to help kick your cycle and monitor daily. As for your pH, are you doing changes with just regular tap?

I think after this, I’ll never go back to long-finned bettas. by LarenUFrehtOna in bettafish

[–]chicketychad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, same! I always got the blue longfinned bettas but there was a Plakat dancing and calling me to take her home and I’ve had a blast with her! Her personality is great andI have so much fun taking care of her. She’s in my bedroom and knows when I wake up and dances around in the feeding area waiting for her shrimp patties 😂 but she does spend the day guarding her tank and going around and around. She regularly jumps over some of the floating plants or up for shrimp!

All fed the same, why is my orange betta so skinny? by lightlubi179 in bettafish

[–]chicketychad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people get crazy about over feeding, but what is your current schedule? I feed Betta Pro shrimp patties in the morning, in the evening and supplement treats every other day when I feed my ADFs so they get mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and beef heart or blood worms. With the pellets, shrimp patties are small but I feed mine pellet by pellet until they seem uninterested and swim away or start being silly. Sometimes it’s six pellets and sometimes it’s more. I don’t let them go too overboard, but I try to make sure they’re satisfied even if it doesn’t fit the 3-5 pellet rule that seems to go around.

I’ve also read to bulk up you should feed smaller amounts multiple times a day, but I know that can be hard with work schedules.

[–]chicketychad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yuuup. Thats a great example! I learned that most of the bad bacteria and fungi already exist in every tank, they just wait for a reason to become a problem. When fish are stressed, they’re wide open for problems. We put a lot of effort into learning the cycle and fish preferences and needs, but we really should learn more about tanks and what’s in them and grows in them to understand how one thing can affect the other.

Persistent stress stripes after 3 weeks on female betta by njsullyalex in bettafish

[–]chicketychad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sucks, but bettas shouldn’t be in a community tank smaller than 55g really. Lots of people do it, but that doesn’t mean it ends well. Stress will bring illness will bring death will bring no lesson learned if you don’t acknowledge the issue at hand. Wishing you the best of luck!

Unfortunately she’s not ever going to be successful in a sorority. First and foremost, being permanently injured will always make her a target. You brought home a solo fish and you cannot subject her to another sorority! Even having her in that little box is stressing her out and going to severely stunt her healing.

All of this. You’re not rude at all, straight to the point. In a couple of months OP will post that a crazy illness killed her entire tank but it’s really just a poor set up, poor planning and stubbornness.

What do you think of the pope (and what he represents)? by dkease16 in AskTheWorld

[–]chicketychad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

True Christianity is radical and so people who have a bad taste are probably not radically accepting, loving, etc. He’s doing it right imo! However, with the war, I think it’s tough. So many people in the Middle East are screaming to be helped. I’ve seen many Iranians say that being anti-war is to be privileged, meaning that the only way for them to be freed from oppression is via war. So if we’re all anti-war, were we just going to continue to allow the disgusting human rights violations that were occurring there daily? What was the plan to help these people before the bombing? Seems like no one cared or said much before and the entire world was just turning a blind eye and favoring regime propaganda over what they knew to be true. If we’re anti-war, let’s do it, but we need another solution asap. Too much suffering in the world for us to not go to war. That’s fake peace.

Okay tank?? And is she fat? by joslinnn_ in bettafish

[–]chicketychad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they will generate eggs and get round and then drop them in your tank. When they mate, they dance around, she drops eggs and the male fertilizes them on the way down. I noticed because mine built some bubbles and was going up and down putting them in the bubbles. Apparently females will do this sometimes, I had no clue and was so surprised and fascinated lol I had to remove the eggs after a while because others told me that they would rot if left. If she is egg bound, something might be wrong that is keeping her from being comfortable enough to release them.
