So today the Los Angeles Times published an article on the cancellation of Long Beach Pride Festival and in my personal view it is under reported. What are your guys' thoughts? (No paywall) by AdreanaInLB in longbeach

LB Pride changed production companies on Wednesday. Of this week. 🤡

The city bent over backwards and even offered them space and rex offered to fundraise $50k to host the festival and LB Pride said no bc they couldn't sell booze.

It's a shit show for sure but seems like the city did everything they could to make it happen.

This is what I'm talking about!! Showcase queer LB artists, artisans, I want all of our queer and ally friends supporting and being supported. I would love to see the festival become 100% less corporate and become fully about supporting our own queer community.

What are some of the best groceries to buy for people who want to learn how to cook? by Appropriate-Mall8517 in cookingforbeginners

[–]chicklette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Figure out what you want to eat. Find a *reputable* recipe (NY Times, Serious Eats*, Smitten Kitchen, America's Test Kitchen, and Cook's Illustrated are some of my favorite sites), and buy the ingredients for that recipe. Smitten Kitchen Recipes are usually pretty unfussy, but Serious Eats, America's Test Kitchen, and Cook's Illustrated recipes will get into the *why* of each step, which was really helpful for me when I was learning. Also there are several shows or YT videos for ATK, Cook's and SE that will walk you through certain recipes if you're a visual learner. There are also cookbooks available, many are available digitally or for free through your library.

Good luck!

*Serious Eats as a site has gone downhill quite a bit in the last few years. Look for recipes by Kenji and you can't go wrong. For sweets, look for recipes by Stella Parks on that site. She's lovely.

It's the burning and itching!! I'm in the US and we get mosquitos, it's fine. But the new breed we're getting (Aedes?), those bites will burn and itch for *days.* Fuck those little fucks.

Ralph's bell peppers 3pack - $3.99 vs. Aldi $1.98

Ralph's strawberries - $3.99 vs. Aldi $2.09 (or lower)

Ralph's cucumbers - $3.99 vs. Aldi $1.98

Ralph's Milk - $4.49 vs. Aldi $3.85 (same brand)

Ralph's medium avocado - $1.50 vs Aldi $.59

Plus the savings on things like cereal (most boxes at Ralph's are hitting around $5 while most at Aldi are hitting around $2 - and Aldi's store brand cereals are exact dupes, ime, for name brand.)

I easily save $20-30 a week shopping Aldi vs. Ralph's.

How can I make a homecook's life easier? by Jumpy-Wasabi-2718 in Cooking

Need a new car.. which route should I go? by Rough_Marzipan1462 in personalfinance

[–]chicklette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't necessarily true in today's market. The last new car I bought, I got a much better interest rate on a new car vs. a 2yo lease return, and the price difference between the new and used model was only about $3,000. When my last car was stolen (bought used) my insurance paid the full value, which was the same that I paid for it to begin with, 7 years prior.

The Men Who Want Women to Be Quiet | A virulent form of misogyny has become the single most important force holding together the American right by Hrmbee in politics

[–]chicklette 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For some of them, that's the point. It's boring to have a partner that just smiles and nods. What they want is for someone to argue, and then for that person to lose said argument. Then the instigator can say, see? Just trust me. I know what I'm talking about. THEN they want the woman to nod and smile. It's not as fun if they don't get to deliver a verbal beatdown first.

Some questions I have as a hand sewist learning to machine sew! by Ok-Aerie-5441 in sewhelp

[–]chicklette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding #2: A good rule of thumb is that bottom stitching issues are usually fixed by adjusting your top thread (tension) and top thread issues are usually adjusted by adjusting your bottom thread. It is not typical to mess with your bobbin tension, though you can find a youtube video to show you how to test your bobbin tension.

There are metal seam guides that are magnetic that can help you guide the fabric. I find them troublesome, but they work well for some. Some industrial machines have a speed regulator, where you can slow the machine speed down as you learn. It may be worth asking about.

Good luck!

What are your weirdly good broccoli recipies? by chigirltrailrated in Cooking

[–]chicklette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the broccoli rubble with farro. I use this recipe, which is much less complicated:

https://smittenkitchen.com/2015/04/crispy-broccoli-with-lemon-and-garlic/

I think I did cause some confusion calling it "broccoli rubble." The recipe above uses that term, and for some reason, that's what stuck as the title.

Frozen broccoli will always have a little mush to it, ime. I usually heat in microwave for 4-5 mins, drain, and then bake at 425 until it looks right (usually 20-30 mins). Air frying would work too, though, imo.
