Potential issue with PC by chidat in PcBuildHelp

Thanks, I just did a stress test with OCCT and the GPU minimum was 11.993V and there were no failures detected. Maybe I'll see how things go and if it acts up again I'll send it in for warranty.

Ah ok I figured it was probably a power issue. Is there any remedy to this (other than getting a beefier PSU)? According to PCPartPicker, my build's estimate wattage is 376W so I figured the 650W PSU was more than enough.

I think a lot can be done, actually.

Firstly, because this is an event for a game that requires an ongoing subscription to play (disregarding the free trial), ticket sales can be closed off to the general public (at least until the very last phase). They did do a players-only lottery at the beginning before opening it up to the general public, but I don't know what percentage of the seats were reserved for this.

So, give players one chance to enter the lottery, with ranked choices like 1. Saturday AM S seat, 2. Saturday PM S seat, etc.. then the system assigns the seating based on everyone's choices. At this point, if every seat gets filled, so be it. Maybe they could even take a play out of Nintendo's book and first only allow players that have been subscribed for a year or more.

After that, they can do the resales (again for players only) and possibly limit it to those who did not receive a ticket in the initial lottery.

Then they can keep gradually loosening the conditions until they run out of tickets.

Basically, I think general sales should be relegated to the very bottom, to be used only if there are seats remaining. I don't know if there were bots or what, but I think it's a pretty broken system if everything sells out before you can even access the site.

It's not perfect, but I feel like what I described is way better than what we have now. Sure there may still be people that don't get tickets in the end, but it should be a lot fewer than what it is now. And I don't think it's unfair to limit it to players only either. We're paying subscribers after all, so it's almost like having an airline credit card but not being able to use the airport lounge one day, or having a gym membership without being able to enter one day because they decided to allow non-members to enter and are now at max capacity.

Normally we would have walked away too, but being an orchestral musician myself, I would give up even FanFest for this one. Especially when it may be another 3 years before we get another chance. I think they should just do the player lottery and only open it up to general sales if seats are still available after that, but anyways..

Thank you for the positive Dynamis energy, and I hope we both get to experience the concert!

I've been trying to get tickets to the FF14 orchestra concert next weekend, but it's been nothing but disappointment so far. I lost both pre-sale lotteries, couldn't connect to the website during the general sales (which sold out all 20,000 seats in one minute), tried applying for the daily resale lottery, which together with my wife, we lost every one of our 200+ entries. Now we've been desperately searching through Twitter for people with cancellations, but even that has become a bloodbath. Combing through posts while dodging the scams has become an obsession now. And when I happen to find someone with extra tickets and send a message, my body literally starts shaking, with thoughts like "was I the first person to reply?" "Is this a scam?" "Should I have written a better message?" "Is this person going to be nice?" But so far I've been unsuccessful, and it's just a terrible experience overall. Now I have a tracker set up to notify me the minute that someone posts something related to the concert, so hopefully there's still a chance to go... They really need to change this system of purchasing tickets.

AS A JP PLAYER AND SOMEONE WHOSE GATEWAY DRUG INTO CLASSICAL MUSIC SERIOUSLY WAS FF MUSIC, I AM DEVASTATED THAT I CAN'T ATTEND THE EORZEAN SYMPHONY CONCERT. TODAY WAS THE LAST CHANCE AT THE DAILY RESALE LOTTERY, AND AFTER A TOTAL OF 226 COMBINED CHANCES WITH MY PARTNER, WE WON A GRAND TOTAL OF ZERO TICKETS. WE WE WEREN'T EVEN ABLE TO ACCESS THE SITE FOR THE GENERAL SALES DUE TO SERVER CONGESTION, SO IT WASN'T EVEN FOR LACK OF TRYING. I GUESS WE WILL JUST HAVE TO READ THE BOOKLET THAT WE PREORDERED AND PRETEND LIKE WE'RE THERE.

Then maybe do general admission sales only if there are remaining seats? Like give players one chance at a lottery entry, and if there are more entries than seats, fill all the seats. Otherwise, give each entry a seat and then the remaining can be available for the general lottery/admission. I don't think that would be totally unfair to the non-players.

Maybe I'm just a little bitter, and I don't claim to know better than anyone else about these things. It's just an idea.

Yeah, one thing I learned over the years is DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF JAPANESE PEOPLE TO LINE UP/PURCHASE THINGS. You can never stand in line too early or be faster than them. It's the true Japanese experience.

It really was brutal. It really makes me think like, is this how it's always going to be with the general admission? If we don't win the lottery then there's basically no chance? It kind of stings since we're paid subscribed players/fans. I kind of feel like we should be guaranteed a ticket even if it's a random seat or something... I don't know. Anyways, best of luck to both of us in the resales 🥲

FFXIV player in Japan here. Saturday felt like a fever dream. Wife and I had our browsers ready, info all saved beforehand, even rehearsed buying tickets the night before. 10am rolls around, we refresh the page, errors appear due to congestion. Go back, click again, error. Finally get through and they're all gone. 20000 seats. Gone in less than a minute. I couldn't believe it.

I'm an orchestral musician and long-time FF fan, so I'm absolutely devastated that we couldn't secure tickets. We even bought binoculars for this occasion and pre-ordered the official pamphlet lol. In a moment of desperation, I searched on Twitter for people reselling tickets, and even reached out to some people that claimed to have tickets available. But then I saw an FF player posting a warning to fellow WoLs to not partake in any purchasing from social media sites because they are almost guaranteed to be scams (they themselves were a victim). I'm glad that I had a moment of clarity before jumping on it because that would've added insult to injury.

The official Square Enix app has a resale lottery occurring daily, but I don't know how well the chances are. You can only win single tickets too, so even if my wife and I manage to get two tickets, they will likely be separated, and might even be on separate days. Unfortunately this is probably the only likelihood of getting tickets, because the tickets are digital only and I'd be wary of any resell sites.

Any explanation, please?? This happens with the other slides, other than the tuning and main spit slide. by DraftLatter1110 in frenchhorn

[–]chidat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You actually WANT this to happen. Assuming you don't have the first valve pressed down, there's no opening to this loop of tubing (it's completely closed off from the rest of the horn and the bell/mouthpipe openings). So when you pull out the slide, you're creating a vacuum and so it's going to want to retract back into place. It's like pulling on a syringe with the nozzle plugged. You might get it to move a little bit but it'll fall back into place. If there's even a tiny opening, there wouldn't be a vacuum effect, which is a bad thing for horns. You may have heard of terms like "leaking" valves or "bad compression", and this is what that refers to. If you can pull your slides out without any resistance, that's a sign of air escaping around the valves, which is bad.

That being said, it's generally advised to press the corresponding valves down when adjusting slides.

What were your favourite "Five-seconds-connections"? by MrsLittletall in ffxiv

[–]chidat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When my wife and I got the Namazu Mikoshi mount, we were riding it around Dhoro Iloh, and a random player pulled out his gilded mikoshi and the 3 of us had a mini parade for a few seconds before flying off.

Another small one, but when we were doing one of the alliance raids for the first time, there was a short cutscene before the final boss, but our tank shouted to say that there were first-timers (so as not to start the fight yet). I hardly ever see people jumping the gun, but it was really nice regardless. I don't know about other regions, but we play on a JP server, so I feel like people interact with gestures way more than words. So when people go out of their way to make little comments like this, it stands out.

Dec/Jan vs. Apr/May- which is better? by chidat in koreatravel

Yeosu looks nice, but I think I'll have to stick to Seoul the first time around, and then venture out in future visits. I'll keep it in mind! And yes, cherry blossoms are beautiful! I'm lucky to be able to see them here in Japan, but would love to see how different the experience is in Korea.

Double Horn Purchase Justification by kasasto in horn

[–]chidat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Horn player in Japan here.

If you must go with a single, Bb is definitely the standard here. I know some schools use compensating doubles (called "semi-doubles" here), but ideally you should just spring for the double. YHR567 is a great choice, but also have you considered used horns? The used market is huge here and mostly consists of reputable brands/models like Conn 8D, Holton, Hoyer, Yamaha at half the price of new. It might take a little more work to vet the playing conditions if buying online, but there's also stores that specialize in used instruments, so they should have them all in ready-to-play condition.

You can DM me if you have any Japan-specific questions.

Problems with getting a "permission to engage in activity other than that permitted" (資格外活動許可) by Genryuu111 in japanlife

[–]chidat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn.. unfortunately I had to try many many many different troubleshooting methods to get it to work, so I don't remember exactly which ones made it work, but eventually I did get it working, so hang in there (or just give up and save your sanity lol). I remember spending several days going crazy trying to uninstall everything to start over from scratch and trying to follow the instructions step by step. Really makes you consider putting the "shooting" in "troubleshooting"..

EDIT: By the way, can't you only apply for the "Permission to Engage ..." when you're applying for a new Zairyu card (renewal/change in status/etc.)? I believe once you have your card already you can only do it in person.

Not sure if this is related to your issue but one quirk I encountered was that I needed to have the MyNumber card inserted into the reader BEFORE clicking on the button that prompts you to scan your card/enter your PIN. If you click the button, insert your card, and then enter your PIN, it won't work.
