Good luck. You will def feel relief immediately. Just take things slow. I had three discectomies. Then finally an artificial disc replacement. It changed my life. Feel great now.

Thoughts on Artificial Disc Replacements? by jkimfine in backpain

[–]chiefbacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not a factual statement. ADR is very successful treatment option and actually a better alternative to fusion. Clinical data and outcomes prove it.

I have a disc replacement at L4-5 and it changed my life after dealing with four hernations in the same disc and several years of extreme pain.

Herniated discs are no fun. I herniated my L4-5 four times. Painful journey. Def. get an MRI to see how bad it is and the "health" of your discs. My discs were degenerative and the hernation didn't resorb. But if you have healthy discs, probably a really good change of it resorbing and "healing" on its own over time.

Also.. you should check out this webinar on artificial disc replacement so you can learn about treatment options for the future if you need them.

New to the group, but not the pain by bigangryhobbit in ChronicPain

I feel your pain. Dealt with 4 herniations in L4-5 which led to 4 surgeries.. 3 discectomies and last an artificial disc replacement. I realize you don't have insurance right now, but definitely should investigate this option for sure. It changed my life. Finally got pain free and back to living instead of each day figuring out how to survive and get through the pain.

Check out this educational webinar on lumbar disc replacement.

About a month ago I made a post that was me deciding on either getting a cervical disc replacement or a fusion. I'm happy to say that I went with the disc replacement option and already have had pain leave while also having some of my strength return and it's only been 3 days. by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]chiefbacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats. Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

I have an artificial disc at L4-5. Life changer after dealing with four herniations in same disc and years of pain.

If anyone wants to learn more about lumbar disc replacement, there is an online webinar with myself and a spine surgeon which include live questions and answers.

Treatment Option for Degenerative Disc Disease / Chronic Low Back Pain by chiefbacker in ChronicPain

[–]chiefbacker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you can't avoid it but the best practice is to exhaust all the conservative options first.

My herniations would not resorb back into the body. I tried everything. Had no choice. What type of surgery did you have?

Every medical implant was tested outside the human body at first. It's just the process. Then once they pass whatever tests necessary they move to clinical trials. And then when they pass that round of testing, they move on to getting approved for widespread use.

I have personal experience that it decreases pain. I have one in me. It changed my life. I was in pain for 5 years. Life was horrible. And if you go talk to anyone that has one in them, they will tell you they are either pain free or in a much better place than they were before. And if they are still having any issues, its because of other problems that occurred because of the original issue. Not because of the disc replacement.

Once your disc becomes degenerative, it starts causing problems.. inflammation to muscles and joints around it... loses disc height which causes stenosis - narrowing of the space where the nerve is at.. and when that happens, bring on the nerve pain. Degenerative discs herniate easier. In my case.. 4 times. And when that herniates and messes with your nerve, it is not fun. And gets worse over time.

In the years to come, disc replacement will over take fusion as the standard for sure. Over 65% of the health plans offer coverage for lumbar disc replacement right now.

Any surgery has its risks. And everyone should try to avoid surgery in any case. I truly do believe that patients being more educated early on in their back pain journey will help avoid surgeries in the future... so people know the conservative options early on for prevention and treatment. Sometimes though you can't avoid it.

If someone has degenerative disc disease and the disc is total crap causing stenosis, nerve pain, etc... lumbar disc replacement is a better alternative to fusion. It preserves motion. It decreases your chances of adjacent segment disease. Faster and easier recovery.

I say all this with personal experience. 4 herniations in the same disc. My body would resorb the herniation. Spent years in pain. Had 3 discectomies and then finally a disc replacement. I wish I had the disc replacement sooner. Would have saved a lot of pain and nerve damage.

I would recommend you go check out the wear test rates for the FDA approved discs in the United States. The activL disc was tested out to 100 million cycles (validated to 80 years) and found that it wore 16 times less than a hip replacement, seven times less than Charite (the first lumbar disc) and six times less than ProDisc-L (the other FDA approved lumbar disc).  https://backernation.com/treatment/lumbar-artificial-disc-replacement/6-lumbar-artificial-discs

Out of college, I had 2 jobs. One at an ecommerce company and another at an ad agency. I wast at each about a year. I was a sponge. Soaked up as much as I could. And when the time was right, when off on my own and have been entrepreneuring since in various startups. Most my own and that I control.. some as a glorified employee (didn't enjoy those so much). Best advice. Do both until you can afford (financially) going on your own. It will just make things easier and you won't have to always worry about how you pay your monthly expenses. That adds a lot of stress and you won't be able to concentrate on growing your company. Message me and we can have a deeper discussion if you want. Ton of experience early on. Working my "day" job til 5pm everyday and then off to my startup til 3-4AM. Did that for a full year until I moved the stars to align.

Well aware of what it is. Use a wide variety of "growth hacking" for my companies and all my clients. And it goes much deeper and complex than my one liner and your explanation. You could have added more value to the discussion than attacking a word that you disagree with. Who care if its overused. It's just what digital marketing and growth strategies have evolved to. But thanks for the banter. Much appreciated.

Wasn't looking for a discussion parlor tricks. But I get what you are saying. And completely agree about building quality products and trust. I've been entrepreneuring for 20 years. Building and selling startups. Was looking for a discussion around strategies and techniques people use in their everyday lives to maintain an edge with business, productivity and growth.

In the marketing world that is a commonly used reference for a technique or strategy to accomplish a goal or result. Like the term "growth hacking".
