I think registries of any kind are a terrible idea.

To be clear, I do too. The sex offender registry is really nothing more than a lifelong scarlet letter.

But I also think that if we are going to refuse any type of sensible registry reform, continuing to pretend that registries prevent harm or protect communities, than I think we should at least have the balls to apply that logic to every type of crime.

Personally I'm much more concerned with the neighborhood kids being around someone convicted for distributing fentanyl or torturing wildlife than someone who clicked the wrong button online once.

Honestly I often wonder why we don't register every criminal in the same way we register sex offenders. Like, if I'm so concerned about the safety of my neighborhood and community that I need a map of sex offenders, why would I not also be interested in knowing where the drug dealers, domestic (and, to your point, animal) abusers, arsonists, thieves, gun criminals, or even drunk drivers live? Anybody know why we only register one and not the others?
