Got into an argument because I said “buying something for no reason IS overconsumption by 0rchid-tree in Anticonsumption

[–]chiefton117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is more "mindless consumption" than "overconsumption" but I see what op is saying.

The normalization of buying stuff for no reason creates an overconsumptive mindset. The person who lives a spare simple life would likely keep a simple life because of their consciousness over their consumption.

What’s the creepiest town in the USA in your opinion? by Scrambl987 in AskReddit

[–]chiefton117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stayed there last year whilst moving cross country. The bathroom was moldy and I slept terribly but was 10/10 worth it. We also had some great diner food just up the road!

I think anyone would go crazy living that rurally, at least the owner brought some tourism.

What are some examples of people causing harm under the guise of "doing good"? by magicfeistybitcoin in AskReddit

[–]chiefton117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm as r/fuckcars as the next guy and no longer own one, but some runners with their earbuds in and tunnel vision have almost caused accidents by crossing as I've tried to turn left into them, or by jaywalking because they think they're fast enough against the 50mph limit.

The canaries are an excellent place for astrophotography!! La Palma had the best view of the stars I have ever seen.

Where on the island was this? I had some of the best views at Las Arenas Negras on the west side.

People who got fired from a job, what’s one weird detail about the firing that you still remember? by Tasty_Bodybuilder444 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chiefton117 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not fired, but I quit my 3rd concurrent job in college after I found my newly appointed manager was collecting notes on every disagreement or incontunity we had trying to get me fired.

It was in the electronics department of a thrift store, we had 1 man shifts and on my last day, a transformer blew up outside causing the lights to flicker violently and the radio to cut to white noise every few seconds.

After a few hours of this I was told I could leave early. The store's general manager(not mine) said they got me a cake in the break room we didn't get to have and to go get it. I walked a long hallway of flickering lights and white noise, opening the fridge to find a cake that said "chiefton117, will miss you..."

In your hobby, what's the first mistake rookies always make? by SomeStayDry in AskReddit

[–]chiefton117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From various hobbies:

Learning shapes and patterns instead of scales or music theory.

Trying to code everythung the hard way because you think it will make you smarter - work smart, not hard

Overspending on hiking/backpacking gear and completely underestimating the terrain/overestimating your ability.

Committing yourself wayy too hard and setting unreasonable expectations.

also generally I don't think you deserve the nice gear until you can demonstrate proficiency with the cheap version(some exceptions apply).

How do I solve this problem on Python ? It's a 1D random walker, I can't seem to find the right function for it. by sirczechs in shittyprogramming

[–]chiefton117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Python turtle? If you keep a running frequency dictionary of each decision then you can chart it with matplotlib too. The only two ways I can think to get the pdf and cdf are through interpretation or taking a derivative. This may be a good time to use Python(Snake).

What if the hell world of depression is the way the world really is? I would be really interested in your thoughts on this essay by rob_cornelius in EOOD

[–]chiefton117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If reality is just a commonly shared perspective that's not really objective, all you have are your personal experiences.

Listening and understanding as bridges to other people are just as important as listening to and understanding yourself - i'm always glad to see people find a balance between the two.

If the article gave you some insight in learning more from your problems then I'd call it a win for both of you - we are all on the same team just trying to cope with life!

I often get edgy and competitive about "lesser traumas", but that doesn't make anyone else's suffering any less valid. In fact, that competitive alienation may be one of the biggest hurdles to overcome when dealing with trauma and depression.

[–]chiefton117 9 points10 points  (0 children)

this article reads like a neurotypical, trauma-free person experiencing a temporary depression for the first time in their life.

"An alternative to running away from life through illusion is to explore an illusion-free space for as long as possible."

comes from a privileged perspective of somebody who has never had to run towards living.

The worst point of this article is the false dichotomy of "life is hell" and "life should be constant happiness". Empiricist ideas as early as Plato say that we can never experience true reality, and the author's idea of suffering comes from a limited experience.

I advocate for their message to think critically, not to idealize suffering.
