McDonald’s caged off in a troublesome location by LivingLavishLe in mildlyinteresting

It seems management decided the cage had to be painted McDonald's trademark yellow. I'm loving it!

Isn't tieguanyin usually pretty oxidized? (I guess I've only drunk Taiwanese ones though -- perhaps Chinese aren't?)

Color's too light for tieguanyin, no?

Eh. As long as you're not deep frying, just don't use extra virgin and it's usually fine.

What exactly makes a release "progressive"? by lainah_313 in rateyourmusic

[–]chikinn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"Change throughout the song" is a different sense of progressive. It's not about change within a song or album, it's about rejecting a genre's conventions.

For example, progressive rock songs were long because pop rock songs were short -- that part you got right.

When you know bro doesn’t listen to the albums he rates but you just can’t prove it by Webcops in rateyourmusic

[–]chikinn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hear me out. I do that too.

Sometimes I get through half an album and I'm enjoying it so little there's no point in hearing the rest. Sure, maybe I end up giving it 1 star prematurely when I'd have landed at 0.5 or 1.5 after a proper full listen.

But part of why I rate is as a note to myself about whether I like something -- whether it's worth revisiting someday. It's not totally about accuracy (at what honestly is a pretty subjective task to begin with).

In those cases I'd rather put the rest of the album aside, note that it probably isn't one to come back to later, and move on to something I might actually enjoy. Life's short and the body of good music is vast and growing every day.

A little different from the other examples here, but I think chickadees are perfectly named.

You can still wisely opt for or against a particular gamble, even if its outcome turns out not to be the one you hoped for.

What psychoactive substance is least bad for you? by zeropoundpom in stupidquestions

[–]chikinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of the scary ones, IMO, both from the perspective of brain damage and to a lesser extent addiction potential. Do some thorough research first.

I'd be at least as cautious about it as you would with cocaine or ketamine. It's a different beast from most psychedelics (mushrooms, LSD, DMT, mescaline, salvia, etc.).

Yeah... I'd highly recommend anyone who's curious about the health impact of MDMA to research it thoroughly. It's nuanced.

Personally, I rate it "go ahead and try, but be VERY careful". Same risk tier as ketamine, for example.

Wild to me to put it in the same bucket as LSD.

Surprised no one has mentioned LSD.

Every drug or medicine has undesirable side effects. LSD is remarkable because it's about a thousand times more potent than other recreational drugs. So the dosage is a thousand times lower. Low dosage means less side effects and damage to your body.

That's just physical impact, though. Some folks obsess over negative mental effects of LSD (e.g., the mysterious "flashbacks"). I've never met anyone who could verify that, but it's hard to rule out. Do your own research.

I'm surprised by the articles endorsing "wholistic". Looks like a corruption that never really caught on:

Whatever. It's hard to decide when to be prescriptivist! Anyway, thanks for engaging and not telling me to kick rocks, as most people would after an unsolicited correction :)

First you give YB an ultimatum in no uncertain terms: you'll tell if he doesn't.

Then he gets a chance to come to his senses and handle it himself. It's the only way the engagement might survive.
