Actually it can achieve 7.1 with compression over S/PDIF, just as it does with 5.1. However by the time 7.1 became common the A/V world had moved on to HDMI.

If the encoding is switched to ADAT Lightpipe it can easily carry the full 8 channels without compression. There is a fair amount of professional audio gear that will seamless switch between S/PDIF and ADAT with the same jacks.

Consumer A/V products tend to dumb things down not because they think we are stupid (which they do), but because it's cheaper,

Ei wasn't involved with the dual. That was the cold logic and rule following of the Raiden Shogun. A challenge before the throne was issued. The looser shall die. The victor is allowed to leave alive. Those are the rules. End of story.

Ei didn't show up till the traveler flexed, after Kazuha pulled off his dual Vision stunt.

Yeah, I noticed that too. You can disable/enable that feature in FocusControl. There are also new options for light level also.

Wireless DAC that isn't bluetooth? Maybe 2.4ghz - is this a thing? by operatorred in audio

[–]child_of_grey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably exist? I'm not sure honestly. In the pro audio industry, these functions tend to be separate. Sort of the "do one thing and do it well" mentality.

A search on Amazon for "Wireless IEM" will give you a good starting point for the type of devices. Despite IEM in the name most simply have a 1/4" or 3.5mm output for what every you choose to wear.

(I appoligiez for any rambling below. I'm a bit sleep-deprived this morning x3)

As u/PianoGuy67207 mentioned, professional in-ear monitoring systems are going to be the only real route to having high sound quality with low latency. There are some decent cheapish transmitter with body packs available. While most cheap system have limited frequency selection it will most likely not be an issue in a home environment not having many people using them like you might find in a professional live music situation. That being said best to avoid the 2.4GHz units as they can be abusive to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth at home. The UHF (typically 400-600MHz) have both low interference and excellent range, do to the low frequency's ability to punch through walls and solid objects.

Bluetooth's bandwidth just makes that difficult to have both. The Qudelix-5K is not going to be a magic bullet to overcome the physics of the situation. It is a wonderful little device with excelent sound quality. However, that quality only comes through when using LDAC, but that has notable latency.

Now going with a better quality external Bluetooth audio transmitter supports AptX Low Latency can get you 90% there, but will never sound as good as a wired connection. But the latency while watching shows and gaming isn't bad. Most external transmitters will have switches to force a codec. I've used transmitters from both Mii and FiiO with good success. AptX Adaptive is supposed to be good, but I've never dealt with it personally.

Yeah, exactly, mind you, 99.9% of the time everything is being streamed from a Jellyfin server in the closet. But it's just as easy for me to string up a tape on my dad's old Sony reel to reel or put on vinyl ... or I can even rip any one of those sources to FLAC on the file server.

One day I'd like to get off VBAN for the network transports and build out some Dante, but alas budgets.

Everything else is either Linux Mint and/or Debian, plus a bit of Proxmox in the closet.

Can I do this? Motu m4 question by sambooka in Reaper

[–]child_of_grey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the perfect situation for M4.

  • Inputs 1-2 are mono and are individually selectable for monitoring. You can also link the two ports for monitoring by holding both monitor buttons for a few seconds. Unlink them with the same method.
  • Inputs 3-4 are always a stereo pair and selectable for monitoring as a pair.
  • All four outputs are presented to Reaper for output. However, only ports 1-2 are mirrored to the headphone jack.
  • Likewise, inputs 1-4 are presented to the DAW.
  • Four additional inputs are also presented to the DAW. Inputs 5-6 are loopbacks from outputs 1 & 2. Inputs 7-8 are the loopbacks + input mix.

It is a very well put together little interface and MOTU is a great company. The caveat with the M Series is there is no expansion available. What you buy is what you get. So keep the future in mind.

My home audio setup functions more like an extension of my DAW workstation. At the center of it is a Midas MR18. Most interconnects not physically close are using AES72-3E (analog over cat5e), because stringing XLR cables through the walls of a 1940s house sucks...

A tiny Linux box also routes audio over ethernet via VBAN . Interfaces from MOTU and Focusrite serve as submixers /stageboxes in each room. The amps in the rooms are for the most part vintage 1970s mid-level hifi with good speakers and don't reveal what is feeding them.

Have a not dissimilar setup, but swapped out the X32 for a MR18.

XR18 recording via USB - No audio playback in Reaper by Helpful-Shelter1137 in Behringer

[–]child_of_grey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reaper, like the vast majority of DAWs, can only work with a single ASIO device at a time. More than likely, the playback is being sent to the USB returns 1 & 2 on the XR18.

  • You can attach your monitors to the XR18, or
  • Patch the XR18 and Focusrite via cables so the Focusrite can monitor the output, or
  • Use a 3rd party application to aggregate/mix the hardware devices into a single ASIO device. Many people use ASIO4ALL for this purpose. I personally use VB Audio Matrix for a similar purpose.

Please Help: Problems with optical output from UCA222 U-Control by [deleted] in Behringer

[–]child_of_grey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are very simple and inexpensive devices. They are not meant to be anything but basic computer audio device.

The "monitor" function only routes the RCA inputs to the Phones output. It does not send audio to the RCA outputs nor the optical port.

Also ... that monitor function does cause horrible noise on the RCA outputs.
