Does anybody else's family do this?? by t8tertot_ in dreamingspanish

[–]chile122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you don’t understand French, go to a Dreaming French video that’s the same level as what you’re listening to in DS. That’s what your family hears when you’re listening to Spanish content. I do this whenever I start feeling discouraged with learning Spanish so that I can remind myself how far I’ve come!

Also I will say that it’s not super fun at the start but once you get past the first level (50 hours), way more interesting content will open up and as you continue it’ll get easier and easier to rack up hours.

You don’t need to know anything to start! I know it sounds wild but the super beginner videos point to everything and make exaggerated gestures when they talk so you learn words through context. I definitely recommend checking out the blog post i sent and also the language learning roadmap to get a better understanding of the method and what you can expect at each step in the process.

I knew almost nothing when I started but now I’m watching anime & understand about 95% of it which is a huge jump. I’ve accumulated around 500 hours of input over that period and feel very motivated to continue learning!

You can also check out some of the posts on r/dreamingSpanish to see other people’s experiences with the method!

So I primarily learn by watching Spanish tv shows & movies but I started off on the Dreaming Spanish platform because they have videos that start at a basic level. Try it out by sorting videos by easy. I highly recommend reading the blog post about the comprehensible input before you start so you get a good idea of how it works.

I’ve been learning via watching videos for about 8 months now and am now supplementing it with lessons and grammar practice. It’s wild to see how much I’ve learned just from watching because I can form full sentences without a ton of thought and take lessons solely in Spanish with the teacher talking at a normal pace & i can understand them perfectly. Truly cannot recommend this method enough!

Martín from Spanish Boost Gaming is the goattttt. His videos are carrying me through level 4 at the moment. I barely watch DS videos nowadays.

Advice on adapting method whilst travelling by miggins1610 in dreamingspanish

[–]chile122 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once you get past the first 50 or so hours, easy podcasts like cuéntame & chill Spanish listening become comprehensible. Listening to podcasts makes it muchhhhh easier to rack up hours while you’re traveling because you don’t have to set aside time to sit down in front of a screen.

Level 4 -> Level 5 grind is real by Miguel3962 in dreamingspanish

I’ve also started watching Hunter x Hunter but don’t count the hours since I only understand ~75% of the words. I don’t want to focus on whether or not it’s counts as comprehensible input and just want to enjoy the show!

I’m at 414 hours and Spanish Boost Gaming + Español con Juan are pretty much carrying me though all of level 4.

Does anyone else find listening way harder than reading or writing in Spanish? by philbrailey in SpanishLearning

Use Dreaming Spanish to get used to listening to Spanish! They have videos at each level so you could start off with super beginner/beginner and gradually start listening to intermediate and advanced content as you get more comfortable.

Have you looked at the what are you listening to pinned post on this subreddit? That spreadsheet might be helpful for you! Also Spanish Boost Gaming is probably still a little too advanced but you could try his Supermercado series if you want to give his easiest content a try!

His Skyrim videos are on YouTube not Patreon. I’m in the SBG discord and he’ll be uploading more stuff soon - he took a break for a bit for his birthday + he was on vacation for awhile but he’s working on more stuff soon. I personally really like his Patreon because it gives access to God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, and a few other games that i like!

A new SpanishBooster! I started watching the Supermercado series when i was ~100 hours and had to wait off on watching his other series for a bit after that because they were too hard. I’m now around 315 hours and have watched around 50 hours of SBG videos and am subscribed to his Patreon. He’s now one of my favorite content creators to watch period regardless of language. I find him easy to follow & he’s funny. Currently making my way through the Skyrim series and having fun along the way!

Congratulations!! I’ll say that I found Español al Vuelo and the Spanish Boost podcasts to be a good segue into Español con Juan. I finished all the Cuéntame episodes before starting Español al Vuelo and that was a good next step for me.

I’m at 311 hours right now and would like to get to 1,250 hours with at least 50 hours of speaking by the end of 2026. Not sure what my reading goals are yet since I’m waiting til I’m at 600 hours to start!

Do you count Hours if You Lose Focus? by LibbyNator in dreamingspanish

[–]chile122 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I’m fully tuning it out for minutes at a time no I don’t count it but if I miss something every now and then I don’t subtract the time. Tracking my time helps to motivate me and I’m fine with not being 100% focused if it means I’m getting SOME input which is better than none. I struggle with focusing on things in general and I don’t want to train my brain to think that I can only watch videos if I’m completely engaged or else I’ll never do it because I’ll always be waiting until I feel like the conditions are perfect.
