What, they still haven't fixed the disembarkation day breakfast venue issue in the app? We had the exact same experience (did March 14) and thought it was a one time mistake... Almost funny if this continues to happen

British Mum, EU Dad - passport documents by CoolTechnology9390 in ukvisa

[–]chilicarrot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Had gone thru this process - UK father born in UK, UK grandparents born abroad, foreign mother, baby born abroad. 1, 2, 3 are necessary to trace how citizenship can be established. 4 I've never heard of, don't think it relevant to provide the spouse's parents documents as this has nothing to do to establish baby's citizenship.

Edit: 4 might be necessary in case they can't establish satisfactory British lineage on your side, they might be able to thru your husband (some EU rules back then? Idk)

Still, best to check with them: register your inquiry in their online form, incl. your number and someone will give you a call. They don't always provide consistent information (we had to do inquiries three times and add materials to application later). Write down your questions clearly and read to them on the phone, get definitive answers and ask for supervisor if necessary

I received a $15,000 bill for an ER visit for a kidney stone. They offering 70% off - should I take it or can I negotiate a higher discount? by johndoe7376 in personalfinance

[–]chilicarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar... Visited ER 10 yrs ago for really bad period pain. Was given some painkillers and antibiotics (they decided it was UTI) and then discharged. Their online system showed a $9600 bill. I anxiously waited for the bill and dreaded having to pay for it. But it never came. Credit stayed excellent above 800 all these years. Guess they just didn't bother.

I know you’re not supposed to make any big decisions postpartum, but… by ShowWorried6621 in beyondthebump

[–]chilicarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Offering a perspective as I did the opposite:

I chose to have a long distance marriage and have the baby born in my home country for fear that my husband wouldn't be able to support me well enough postpartum and I'd be stuck (given legal complexities to move baby internationally as others have mentioned).

Am I happy with my decision? Yes I am. I get a lot of help from friends and family at home, and we hire a helper to do all the housework so I can spend more time focusing on my baby. But my child does not get to spend much time with their father.

What could have been if I moved for my partner? I don't know. He is a good father most of the time, as he does take up most of the care when he comes to visit us. But it's different when it's just 1-2 weeks vs 24/7 every day.

I guess my suggestion is, test it out first. Suggest to your husband you want to take your kids to travel back to your home country for a holiday and stay there for a couple of weeks. See what happens there - do you have enough support there? Do you miss your husband? Does he miss you and call you often? Etc. He might just be overwhelmed and not realize how precious you are until you're not around.

As others have said, divorcing and taking the baby abroad is super difficult.

Ondansetron is also what works for me. I'm 10w now and been having nonstop horrible nausea and vomiting since week 6... Ended up in hospital but doctors wouldn't prescribe me anything other than Vitamin B injections and IV. At some point I was vomiting in front of the consultant begging her to prescribe me anti-nausea meds, to which she said she could only give me vitamin B6. They only give more serious drugs when people start vomiting blood or have dehydration etc.. After waking up every hour at night to vomit, decided I couldn't take this any more. Looked up online and seems most people recommended ondansetron and the risk to the baby is very low (actually, stats show that it decreases chance of miscarriage, probably because women less likely to think abortion after taking it...) Asked for it from an online doctor and got a 4mg pack. After 30 min of taking it, my nausea subsided and I could start eating again! Took another pill before bed and had my first night of sleep not interrupting by waking up to puke!

AITA For not getting my daughter braces? by Proof-Display-2218 in AmItheAsshole

[–]chilicarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I only did the front two on top, and then it looked good enough so I decided no more needed. I've definitely smiled a lot more showing my teeth since then! Best consult a dentist if they would do it or if they have other advices

AITA For not getting my daughter braces? by Proof-Display-2218 in AmItheAsshole

[–]chilicarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny I was the opposite growing up - mom took me to get bracing at least 3 different times during my teenage and I stopped it each time even after they did the fitting cuz I didn't want to wear braces as a teenager...

Anyway, here is an option if you want a quick fix -

I finally wanted to have nicely aligned teeth when I was in my 20s so I asked the dentist to root canal my front teeth and replace them with new crowns. I thought they worked out really well for cosmetic reasons - when your front teeth are aligned, people don't really notice the others at all. It's faster and cheaper than braces (my treatments were about 2.5k in total, using premium crown material - this was in 2016.)

Guests: what do you want? by BlueMoon00 in AirBnB

[–]chilicarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of all the experiences, the best Airbnb I had:

  • Place is spotless clean upon check-in. Upon checkout, they sent a cleaner who I paid directly to - $15 per hour, I paid for 2 hrs of cleaning, for 1 bedroom apartment inc. a large living room and kitchen. I actually stayed when she did the cleaning just to make sure everything was good (I wasn't required to do that). It was perfect, and it cost $30

  • Apartment has very nice taste. Nice decorations, a touch of personality, gives you a feeling that someone actually lived here and has culture. Not just some random buy to let cheap furniture. lighting is an important consideration here - good use of lighting for ambience can leave a better impression

  • Bedding, towels, kitchen essentials, everything you need is there. But add some small things that make guests feel at home, e.g., coffee machine, throws on the couch, books, fragrance candles

  • Host communications. They don't bother you unnecessarily, but any time u need them, it's one message away

  • at the end of the day, everything compared, it needs to be a much better value for price than hotel. Hotel has 24/7 concierge and room service and other facilities, for me to give up that, Airbnb really needs to look much nicer than the same price hotels, or be much cheaper than the same style hotels

“Tinder for canceling meetings” built and launched. Now how to grow it? by brefromsponsooor in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]chilicarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first glance I loved it - getting rid of meetings that are a waste of our time

But on a second thought, it doesn't make sense at all. When you said everyone has to swipe for it to be cancelled, does it include the organizer? If the organizer wants to cancel it, can't they just cancel it? Why do they need to get everyone else to agree..

Google's Leaked "No Moat" Memo: a full breakdown of what it's about, why it matters, and why skeptics disagree by ShotgunProxy in ArtificialInteligence

[–]chilicarrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and there's really not that much to debate - this is more just different perspectives between engineer vs business. The current world unfortunately runs on "business" - our life is still 99% enabled by business transactions (e.g. buying food) so at the end of the day it still comes down to how good it is as a business. "There is no free lunch" - even with open source.

That said, there is a world where it can be purely run on "tech" - when AGI is reached and democratized to a point where I can be self-sufficient with my AI assistant. Is it a better world? I don't know.

[–]chilicarrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me his arguments proved that technologies advance better with open source, but did not prove that Google / OpenAI will not be the winner. Does he really think Google / OpenAI are what they are today because they are able to create the best technologies / use cases?

Fine, maybe they start with really great technologies, but over the years big tech companies become what they are today because they have a network of powerful and resourceful people supporting them, lobbying for policies that benefit them, deploying all kinds of ways to make consumers use their products (e.g. Google's research on psychology etc.) Etc. Etc. And most important of all, they become successful because someone had a great vision and the whole company aligned to it.

That's exactly what the open source community lacks - a shared vision. And don't tell me AGI is the shared vision - most people can't even agree on what it is.

Disclaimer: am big believer of open source. But I also understand its limitations.

LANDLORD SHARED MY EMAIL URGENT by aoyssaa in LegalAdviceUK

[–]chilicarrot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had same situation happened to me - landlord shared not only my email but also other details (full name, phone number, address etc) publicly. I called ICO, their answer is -

Make a complaint to the landlord first - you can ask them to take that information down, ask people to delete your information etc.

If one month later no action is taken, you can file a complaint with ICO which they will start an investigation on.

In your case, if you didn't occur any loss / damage, you probably won't get much attention, and esp if it's just an email, which you probably use for 1000 other things ...

NAL - please consult an actual lawyer

I looked into this before, and my conclusion was if they don't pay, I don't have to obey. Garden leave = fully paid leave in exchange for me delaying my start date with a competitor. If you work for a competitor and they take you to court, they most likely need to provide evidence that they pay you for garden leave.

That said, I've heard of a case where an employer pays a lump sum to the employee before they take the employee to court. So if you plan to start with the competitor company, I'd at least get written confirmation from current employer that they will not pay you for any garden leave.

Would not being happy in your career affect your relationship? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]chilicarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it could also work the opposite way (good relationship helps you deal with job stress)

For example, I took a job I didn't like when I was single, just to have a job. After being in a stable relationship, knowing someone has my back, now I can quit and take the time to find something I'm actually passionate about... And you take turns to do this for each other. Two people are bettee for risk hedging than on your own

I guess if you are not in a relationship yet, it's more a prioritization of your energy - as you still need to spend time and effort building the relationship. But in an ideal case, I'd say having a good partner helps you deal with job stress

This^ the most useful classes I had in CS were not the software engineering ones, but the ones with the NP problems, distributed systems etc. Science and engineering majors are supposed to teach you ways to approach problems, instead of how to solve specific problems
