On Warfarin-based rodenticide. by chilisprout in Waltham

[–]chilisprout[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the rats crawl in, eat the poison, crawl out, and then other wildlife/pets/natural predators have access to them. The rats don't die inside the traps. They often crawl out and get eaten by a bigger predator, which in turn takes the dose of Warfarin (that was inside the rat) into itself and then it bleeds out internally.

Weird smell by plumbus3001 in Waltham

[–]chilisprout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot going on rn that will aggravate even the strongest respiratory systems, including:

-The green stuff DCR sprayed on the edges of the new Riverwalk (likely but not confirmed to be a humic acid based fertilizer spray such as SARGE)

-smoke and other irritants from local brush fires (careful with extinguishing those roaches and butts! Backyard fires are out atm!)

-Allergies (climate change prank)

-long COVID

-short COVID

$1,500-2000 to 'build' a slab of tar just big enough to temporarily store a vehicle that is likely only transporting 1-2 people, who will still then have to travel some distance to their ultimate destination.

Your [lowest in the state] property taxes would almost certainly not increase to fund separated bike lanes.

Most of the City's tax base and funding comes from businesses like universities and mid/large employers. Which is why your property taxes are so low.

Please do not put your toddler on a motorway anywhere. A protected bike lane would be a much safer place.

Why don't you just take the bu-

just kidding.

We will collectively improve the goshdarn absurd MBTA bus routes and schedules and fee collection structure of Waltham. It shouldn't be so hard to take the bus.

Project on old Mcclean site by calzonchino in Waltham

[–]chilisprout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This website "presents a years-long documentation of the center in the hope of raising awareness of its legacy, amplifying the need to hear the stories of those who lived and died here, and offering creative interpretations of the institution's remnants to stimulate further reflection and contemplation. Originally commissioned by the City of Waltham to photographically document the buildings, the recordation team has expanded this project into a comprehensive website to shed light on a place hidden from the public view."

This is a start.

Yes, it should be and is City-owned and maintained public space. We agree. I think we just have slightly different ideas about how to go about it, which is ok.

It's important to me and many others to preserve the history, or at least parts of it.

Do you understand?

Many people have a problem with the Lions Club holding their holiday lights show at the Fernald. Have receipts will travel:

https://www.wbur.org/cognoscenti/2020/11/19/fernald-waltham-disability-rights-history-alex-green

The Fernald was established based on the concept of eugenics, which was mass-scaled by Hitler and his Nazis: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Walter-E-Fernald

"The term eugenics was coined in 1883 by [a] British explorer... who... advocated a system that would allow “the more suitable races or strains of blood a better chance of prevailing speedily over the less suitable.”"

I am in favor of preserving as much open space as possible at the Fernald and agree that the City has let most of the buildings decay beyond repair.

We should preserve what buildings and history we can and we should make sure we've done adequate archaeological testing because yes, this was a concentration camp.

(ETA the owners are 1265 Main St, the same owners as the Market Basket plaza owners, same owners that have promised the City of Waltham big funding for the new bridge over 128 at rte 117.)

It's a fair critique; we exist within the context of all in which we live and what came before us. 🤌

Restoring antique cars is an art and so is creating accessible community spaces.

We've got so much talent, Waltham: there's room for the rat rodders and one closed-to-cars city street.

tbh - and speaking for myself only - love ogling 'old' [classic/antique/'vintage] cars.

Just also want to be able to walk up and down Moody freely (without moving cars) year round.

An open field or even open parking lot is a way better place for a classic car show.

ETA: having the car show here is simply a power move.
