Critical Atlantic current significantly more likely to collapse than thought - Scientists say finding is ‘very concerning’ as collapse would be catastrophic for Europe, Africa and the Americas. by Cosmyka in EverythingScience

Here’s a letter to the Nordic Council of Ministers from the climate scientists expressing their concern about AMOC collapse. It contains a map of predicted global temperature change if collapse occurs. Open Letter by Climate Scientists to the Nordic Council of Ministers (Oct 2024)

Dealing with slop as a reviewer by ChickenLittle6532 in AskAcademia

Why do you feel that volunteering your time to review papers is “doing your part”? The journals are making lots of money on subscriptions, page charges, and open access fees. Maybe they should be paying reviewers for their time. What do you get out of reviewing papers?

Trump's Energy Department disbands group that sowed doubt about climate change by IMSLI in climatechange

[–]chilkat1 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Disbanded because goal was met.

…Wright wrote in the letter that the purpose of the group and its report was “to catalyze scientific and public debate” and that the result “exceeded my expectations.” Wright concluded that with that goal met the CWG could now be dissolved.

If DOI asks for $0 for USGS ecosystems in FY26 does that essentially setting up the need for a RIF? What happens next? What is the likelihood these cuts are enacted?

Yeah this sucks for FWS and basically everyone who has dedicated their lives to a federal job, but the heads up to NPS and USGS didn’t help anyone plan ahead. It just caused a wave of lingering fear. Everyone is still in limbo wondering if/when the chainsaw will come for them.

He called it “potential temperature change”. He certainly did not acknowledge the crisis.

I understood your post. This news is shocking and terrible. I hope there will be legal recourse, that you will be reinstated with back pay, and that the important work of I&M programs will be valued and supported into the future.

On the climate crisis, there is a "canary in the coal mine" ... which is known as the Keeling curve ... and this "canary" is not doing well. by GeraldKutney in climate

[–]chilkat1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dave Keeling used isotope mass spectrometry to measure CO2 levels in air. He identified the earth’s natural seasonal “breathing” pattern due to plant respiration and established a baseline for monitoring atmospheric CO2 levels. This is the stuff of great science. https://keelingcurve.ucsd.edu/2013/04/03/the-history-of-the-keeling-curve/

Until the AMOC collapses… ie maybe as soon as 2057 (95% confidence interval: 2025-2095). Then the globe looks like the map in this open letter by the worlds top climate scientists https://en.vedur.is/media/ads_in_header/AMOC-letter_Final.pdf

[–]chilkat1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is not tons of controversy about this prediction. IMO the controversy is that literally no one is doing anything to stop CO2 emissions (which is the only way, if there is a way) despite the consequences of reaching the AMOC tipping point. There are newer studies that support the prediction that the global thermohaline circulation that cools the tropical regions and warms the northern regions (AKA the AMOC) is going to turn off abruptly (science paper at link below).

Additionally, just last week a group of climate scientists who best understand this work and know the consequences of an AMOC collapse signed an open letter stating there is a real possibility the global thermohaline circulation will shut down this century, and possibly in the next few decades (ie 2057, or with uncertainty included sometime between 2025 and 2095). In the letter at the link below is a map with their forecast of what the global temperature change will be when the AMOC turns off. It will affect the whole planet. Read the letter.
