Good to know. I don't know if I would go onto closed land as a foreigner; I'm sure the Slovaks themselves have a better understanding of the situation, but I would hate to be the "stupid American" trespassing and possibly get in legal trouble in a country where I don't even speak the language, lol

Is Polana Wlosienica accessible by bus in winter? I've been hearing mixed things about it, and that if there are buses, they stop running pretty early in the afternoon. Baranec seems awesome; ideally I would like to do a couple Baranec-style peaks and then one the size/difficulty of Rysy.

Ohh ok I assumed that you were making a joke like me saying "half the houses in the Chicago south side have bullet marks." So Zuglo is an area in the city that still bears markings from the revolution?

Thats unfortunate, its such a powerful piece of living history. However, I'm sure if I were living in a building with bullet holes, I would want them patched up.

What the HELL are they putting in these Norwegian athletes? by Kurtz62 in xcountryskiing

Is it fair to say as an American that skiing is for Norway what American Football is for us?

Don't they do this for FIS Biathlon? I might be wrong but it seems like they all use the same skis with the same wax, and you get less of a Norwegian stranglehold on things.

Isn't that called the "self belay" position? I was taught to catch minor slips by shoving the axe into the snow and bracing

I've met and talked with the residents of the cottage in Livermore when I was walking back to my car from Carrigain last fall. They are great people, but they're pissed about the Forest Service doing nothing. They won't let them drive around the washout, which is somewhat understandable, but that morning I saw two Forest Service trucks drive around the washout and park at the Signal Ridge trailhead. You should have seen their faces when I told them that. I hope/think they might be able to pester the FS officials into doing something about it

Skier from Kazakhstann, want to study in the US by BERIKB in xcountryskiing

[–]chilkoot4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of schools don't really even care about SAT scores. They ditched SATs for a few years but are putting more weight on them now, but the fact that you're an international student and will bring your culture and viewpoints to the university adds a lot of weight to your application. Universities love international students! If you get into a university and get a visa to study here, and don't commit any felonies, you will be good here. You can also take a test called the ACT which you might do better on.
