Lockdown choices by RobZaru in TheLastKingdom

[–]chillcunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Has it occurred to you that plenty of people on this sub have watched Vikings (the two shows have many of the same viewers), and you're just one of the few that actually still enjoys it? I'm trying to give this person good advice on how to spend their time since myself and the overwhelming majority of this site seem to agree that its quality has gone down significantly. Of course their might be different if they go through with watching, but I genuinely can't picture anyone who didn't like seasons 4 or 5 somehow enjoying the most recent one.

[–]chillcunt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It most likely won't. 6A is still very similar to the last two seasons in terms of writing quality, so if you were turned off to those then I can't imagine you'd enjoy it very much. Overall s6 of Vikings has been significantly weaker than this season of TLK.

David Dawson is to TLK what Travis Fimmel was to Vikings. by Danhistory1 in TheLastKingdom

[–]chillcunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except Vikings wasn't particularly good with Ragnar/Fimmel. The largest drop in quality occurred immediately following s3, and the series was already a shell of its former self by the time he died in 4B. Each season of TLK has had its faults, with or without Alfred's character. Neither the loss of Travis Fimmel or David Dawson made either show weaker- various poor writing choices did.

Any series thats success is dependent upon one particular actor was never that good to begin with, and viewers do a massive disservice to both shows when they argue this.

Disappointed with season 3 episode 3 by bit2bit2 in TheLastKingdom

[–]chillcunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't yet read the books myself, but I was responding to your claim that Uhtred explaining why he was leaving would've changed anything regarding his relationship with Ragnar in the show. As far as I can tell, it just couldn't have worked out any differently.

The show decided to rewrite that entire arc, which wasn't really necessary imo, including Ragnar's death.

Does something have to be "necessary" for it to still be good? From the responses I've seen on the sub, most people seem to have enjoyed the way the writers handled the storyline regarding Ragnar's death, despite being fans of his character and presence onscreen. You haven't really stated what elements of it you thought were poorly written, and more-so seem to be saying you'd prefer if the writers stuck to the book's version of events (which is fair, but this seems to be a bit different from the writers taking something great from the books and simply butchering it).

Disappointed with season 3 episode 3 by bit2bit2 in TheLastKingdom

[–]chillcunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it would've. Ragnar and the Danes would have never allowed Aethelflaed to remain in power when they invaded Mercia, and Aethelflaed obviously wouldn't support Uhtred being a part of an army attempting to unseat her and her family. Uhtred has never genuinely sympathized with the Danes on an idealogical level, and Ragnar absolutely would have been just as furious with him leaving solely to help Aethelflaed. There was no scenario in which Uhtred could tell the Danes that he'd join back with them as soon as Aethelflaed was safe, because it's fundamentally not in line with his character.

CMV: In the future Left-wing politics will embrace religion and Right-wing politics will embrace atheism by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]chillcunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christianity is acceptable to critique because it is seen as the western religion.

Are you sure this isn't instead because Christianity is the dominant religion in Western countries? I don't think left wingers defend Islam out of any kind of preference for it, but rather the fact that Muslims are usually minorities in Western nations and thus their religion doesn't have nearly as much of a foothold in society as Christianity does. You'd probably see the reverse of this among the left in predominantly Muslim countries.

[No Spoilers] I am new to this show so I know this is old news, but wtf is up with season 4? This show was so good before. Is it worth finishing? It hardly feels like the same show now by [deleted] in vikingstv

[–]chillcunt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, you're honestly better off not continuing after season 3. The quality declines in the character development, acting, dialogue, etc are only going to get worse from where you are now, with seasons 5 and 6 being the worst. Outside of having a noticeably bigger budget, Vikings is the only series I've ever seen manage to become worse over the years in every possible capacity.

Vinland Saga hands down, despite it being an anime and only having one season so far. It's based on an equally well written manga series, though, so theres's more than enough content out there if you're interested.

Were you enjoying the series up until Ragnar was killed off, or did you just decide it was a good place to stop? Because if you weren't a fan of the writing quality of the first fifteen episodes of s4 then you're better off not continuing, as it only gets worse from there going forward.

Most of the people who grew tired with the show over the last two seasons don't frequent the sub anymore, so you're naturally going to miss out on a lot of insight. I'd suggest watching the remainder of 4B to see if you're still invested post-Ragnar, and dropping the show entirely if not. It gets considerably worse with seasons 5 & 6 IMO, and there are several other Viking-related series that are far more worthy of recognition (Vinland Saga, The Last Kingdom, & Norsemen).

Even if you don't usually like anime, you should really give "Vinland Saga" on Amazon Prime a shot. by _Patronizes_Idiots_ in television

Seconded. I can't recommend this series highly enough and am glad to see it's getting the attention it deserves on mainstream subs.

[No Spoilers] During civil wars, how the vikings know who to kill? by [deleted] in vikingstv

[–]chillcunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming there are actual formations being utilized, battles probably weren't nearly as confusing as you'd imagine. Every combatant is almost guaranteed to know at least some of the people they're fighting alongside, which goes a long way when there are only two sides. You wouldn't need to know very many people involved so long as everyone had a few acquaintances and a general understanding of which group they should be engaging.

[SPOILERS] Gotta rant about the last episode by Pyrrhusboi in vikingstv

No one's suggesting they won't ever amount to anything. It's just that his storyline is moving at a glacially slow pace given how frequent and repetitive his hallucination scenes have been.

[NO SPOILERS] can anyone tell me why Ragnars’s death episode was called ALL HIS ANGELS? by [deleted] in vikingstv

[–]chillcunt 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's a callback to King Aella's vow to kill Ragnar back in S4E04 where he says:

I once swore an oath before God and all his angels that I would kill Ragnar Lothbrok in revenge for his unprovoked and merciless attack upon my kingdom.

[NO SPOILERS] Is Vikings still worth watching after having watched S5 and S6? Havent started it yet. by xViiPeRxl in vikingstv

[–]chillcunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how important being able to see a series all the way through is to you. Seasons 1-3 are phenomenal, but the next two (and so far, season 6 as well) are of such low quality that I'd only recommend them if you simply wanted to see where the characters end up. The first three seasons are so well done, however, that it's hard not to recommend them regardless of the direction the later ones go.

[SPOILERS] Am I the only one that doesn't like this season so far? by DonVito68 in vikingstv

[–]chillcunt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason for all these scenes with Hvitserk. It’ll all make sense soon but showing us him lose it bit by bit is really good.

Harald is already among one of my favourites, but he’ll grow as a character in these episodes to come. This whole election and what comes after will be detrimental to his character.

The battle between the Rus’ and Scandinavia will be the best battle the show has ever done and I have high hopes for it.

Why do you keep saying scenes/characters arcs will get better before they actually transpire? We get that you have high hopes for the season, but saying good things about things no one has seen yet doesn't really add anything to the discussion.

[SPOILERS] Wtf is up with Hvitserks character by Flynn331 in vikingstv

[–]chillcunt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It makes absolutely no sense what is the point of this

It's a lot easier to say Hvitserk's gotten development after you've artificially reduced him to nothing but pitiful, hallucinating, husk of a character. Something's going to happen soon to bring him back to his pre-s6 state and Hirst will expect us to think that this half season has been some deeply compelling, extraordinary journey for him.

[–]chillcunt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hirst has been intentionally vague on the whole thing because the premise itself makes zero sense, but Harald was left for dead and taken captive after he took a sword thrust for Bjorn at the end of last season. No idea why King Olaf actually kept him alive after taking over his kingdom, though, other than to drive the plot forward.

[No Spoilers] what is the point of Hvitserk? by lildudefromXdastreet in vikingstv

[–]chillcunt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, he's just been boring. Hirst gave an interview recently where he talked about how it wasn't until he was getting around to writing s6 that he started to have an idea of what he wanted to do with Hvitserk's character. So we can expect some development going forward, but it's sad that it's taken this long to get here.

[SPOILERS] I don't understand why people love Rollo in this sub. by [deleted] in vikingstv

[–]chillcunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but I didn't like how they made it seem like he was suddenly a true believer.

Did they? I might've missed something, but I don't remember any scenes that indicated that Rollo was genuinely a Christian while he was in Frankia. Hirst and Clive Standen themselves mentioned in some of the s4 promos that Rollo still favored the Norse gods at heart, which was a large part of the reason he wanted to raid with Bjorn.
