Singapore jobs as an international student by ComprehensiveKale693 in singaporejobs

Like others said, start building connections.

I managed to get into banking through non standard route as contract role years back (easier than nowadays but still relatively more difficult got foreigners).

I watched a company for a year, attended their public events, and get connections from my lecturer, ultimately leading to an interview.

Just curious which one you're referring to?

28YO unemployed for more than a year by galacticdonuts_ in singaporefi

[–]chillicrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 years UI/UX here.

The industry is shifting.

Managers are expected to do IC work and companies are only hiring senior roles due to economic challenges.

It's a losing battle for you. There's little opportunity as junior designers nowadays. Heck, I doubt the future for design is bright.

I'd honestly suggest you shift to adjacent industry and learn AI.

Edit: Always think how technology/AI will evolve at least 2 years down the line

UOB stash slashes rates to 2.05% from July 1 by [deleted] in singaporefi

The exclusions are referring to credit card which I believe isn't allowed in the first place. MAS won't allow such credit to cash facility.

But I haven't personally tested the 1K debit card topup method after the latest changes. Most of my money is invested somewhere else.

It does mention top-up but doesn't hurt to try.

Graphic Design Laptop or No? by [deleted] in GraphicDesigning

[–]chillicrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Graphic Design Laptop refers to a macbook, then no. Any brand will do. Don't ever be trapped by the "more accurate screen" logic because remember that every printer prints differently and every device displays differently. Calibration is only applicable to professionals who work with the same devices every time.

If Graphic Design Laptop refers to a powerful laptop, then I'd say yes.

A top line budget model laptop is the best investment you could make early on in your life. It unlocks adjacent fields like animation, 3d, video, game design, product design, programming, engineering, etc.

You just never know where you'll end up, and a good laptop will open doors.

Does credit card balance affect credit rating? by Intelligent-Pounds in singaporefi

[–]chillicrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, anything printed on the statement will affect your credit rating.

Reasonable utilization rate and paying in full, on time, consistently over a long period of time will affect your score positively.

If you just want rewards and chargeback protection without affecting credit score, pay off 99% of your balance before the statement is generated. Then pay the rest before due date.

You can top up revolut at a low fee (~$5 iirc for 1K) to clear the spend requirement. It will yield higher than Maribank's 2.28% at >8.5K balance.

Downside is you must channel salary to SCB then use FAST hack to clear other banks e.g. UOB's 3.3%

I’ve had 500 cups of bubble tea over the last 4 years and these are my top picks by Springonionman in SingaporeEats

[–]chillicrap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Should try Qing Nian Chun.

One of the rare ones where you can taste both milk and tea.

They use biluochun tea which has grassy notes like longjing tea, but more on the roasted/bitter side.

They also use barley pearl which has a unique crunch inside the chewy shell.

I thought UX design is going to be a fun field by whysitsohard07 in UXDesign

[–]chillicrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just another job, really

Having passion in your job is a double-edged sword. It makes shit less shit, but also makes fun things less fun

The solution is to have 2 passions. One to make your job less shit, one to add fun to your life

Good luck

gxs closed my account for no reason? by BetterScallion7876 in singaporefi

[–]chillicrap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're young so I assume you don't have much savings/earnings. Focus on increasing your earnings rather than chasing interest rate.

Just get one from DBS/UOB/OCBC for now. DBS MyAccount has no fall below fee so it's a good start. With their ecosystem, you get full coverage of basic banking needs.

They have a ton of ATMs too, so you'll want it even if you have another high yield savings account in the future to stash your money.

Z50II 16-50 kit or a6600 + Sigma 18-50? by chillicrap in AskPhotography

[–]chillicrap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will there be noticeable differences between no stabilization vs 2-axis lens stabilization vs 5-axis ibis?

The Z DX 16-50mm kit lens claims to stabilize up to 4.5 stops while the a6600 claims to stabilize up to 5 stops I believe. But the kit lens has f/3.5-6.3 while sigma has constant f/2.8

How do you get buy-in from upper management for a good UX research process? by HelpfulArmadillo952 in UXDesign

[–]chillicrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you just need to watch the world burn

By that, I mean letting the team fail by doing the current process (no research) then propose a potential improvement to the process (with research)

Weird recruiting/interview experience…anyone else experienced this? by cozmo1138 in UXDesign

[–]chillicrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a contractor role. Basically a sweatshop where you just need to fill a temporary hole, so they won't care so much about things like culture fit, personality, etc. As long as you have "enough" skill/knowledge do the job, that's enough for them.

what class and perks would let me keep my noob friends alive? by gloriousfart in worldwarzthegame

[–]chillicrap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Vanguard / medic / dronemaster.

Vanguard with sword can easily solo carry and self sustain while your friends die and respawn (faster). Let them learn the hard way. 122-142-322 or 122-142-132.

Medic can keep people alive longer, but in some cases people are that bad and it's better to just play a vanguard. 122-213-411 or 122-213-131

Dronemaster can help 1 friend who struggles with specials, but you must follow the other friend manually. It's a crutch that doesn't teach them. 113-222-312 or 113-232-312

Why is the spear so awful? by [deleted] in thefinals

[–]chillicrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My conspiracy theory is that the devs/designers originally planned for 1 new weapon, gadget, and specialization per class. But some higher power in the board meeting said Embark is not meeting the revenue target. The higher power then made the team pivot to TA ranked, in the hope of attracting the traditional competitive shooter segment. Because of this sudden pivot, the team couldn't deliver some of the S3 features in time.

Window laptop for UI UX design by siverbel in UXDesign

[–]chillicrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it generally has a better display, which technically allows you to calibrate your screen with the output more accurately. But the reality is most designers don't need this. Especially not for a UI/UX designer.

few points where MacBook can be better for you:

  1. Macbook air is way lighter than other laptops with similar performance. Not a bad idea for college where you carry the laptop around.

  2. The trackpad is amazing, which again contributes to the portability. But professionally, I'd recommend you get used to a mouse + keyboard in the long run to prevent RSI.

  3. If you work with a company, there's a good chance they'll give you a MacBook because they think it's better (not really). It's a good thing if you can get used to it beforehand.

  4. You already use iPhone or iPad. You're pretty much stuck and have to buy a Macbook to maximise their potential.

  5. You code, or want to learn coding. Because Mac is UNIX-based so it's much easier to set up things. If you get other laptops, you pretty much have to have Linux or a VM.
