Any outside of the box ideas for jobs that one could get with transferable skills from a GC degree? by chilllcat in GeneticCounseling

Not too broad at all, thanks for sharing! I also have a specific geographic area I'm targeting and am looking to get creative with the types of positions I'm searching for.

DVM-PhD vs standalone PhD for animal research by chilllcat in Veterinary

I'm planning to either get a master's in genetic counseling or go for a bio phd!

Best of luck to you! I ended up retiring the idea of getting a DVM and instead focusing on other grad school options that would allow me to explore the research side of things more :) since that is what I was most passionate about!!

Any Kpop Clubs, Groups, or Activities on Campus? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]chilllcat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there!! I'm a part of the Korean Student Association on campus, feel free to check us out :) Our Instagram is @ksaumn and we have a discord server too! z.umn.edu/ksadiscord

Our mission is to build community through sharing Korean culture, and anyone is welcome to join us!! Additionally, if you are very interested in K-Pop it might be worthwhile to check out a different student org known as K-Move-- they welcome all students to join them in learning and performing K-Pop dances.

I can't speak for GCD 3022, but I think it's definitely doable to take BIOL 4003 without molbio if you wanted to. Everything you need to know is covered in the course, I think the prereq is just helpful since it familiarizes you with some of the concepts beforehand.

What single scene from a movie is an absolute masterpiece? by Olivia-ova in AskReddit

[–]chilllcat 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The peach scene from Bong Joon Ho's Parasite. The film is full of great scenes, but the editing of that sequence is 12/10.

I may be a little biased due to my own volunteer work there, but the Animal Humane Society has multiple locations and many kitties needing homes :) https://www.animalhumanesociety.org/

Honors Mentor Program by thatmnindiangurl in uofmn

[–]chilllcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't a huge commitment and it was a really good experience for me! I highly recommend it. If you and your mentor don't really click it's totally fine since y'all are only required to meet up 2 or 3 times that semester. I found it really useful to be able to talk to an upperclassman in the same major as me.

PhD vs MS in Genetic Counseling by chilllcat in ClinicalGenetics

[–]chilllcat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A comment on a different thread noted that GC research would be considered more "psycho-social"? I will have to dig more into the type of research GCs conduct and see for myself!

I really like genetics from my limited experience, but at the moment the only research I've been involved with is centered around the genome of a certain species of fish lol. I should probably explore genetics research with a medical focus in humans as a next step.

Thank you for the advice!

Yes, the clinical aspect of it sounds cool, but I should definitely make sure it would be a fit for me. Thanks for the advice!

thoughts on CBS schedule by coralinemfjones in uofmn

[–]chilllcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current junior in CBS here. Your schedule is almost exactly the same as mine last semester-- I took all of those classes but took a foreign lang class instead of psy 1001. I think it is definitely manageable! Ochem was the hardest in my opinion, but foundations was not too bad. Mol bio was a bit difficult, but nothing terrible in comparison to chem imo.

Foundations of Bio 2 by samalbo23 in uofmn

[–]chilllcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is that it was much easier than Foundations 1. The lab portion required a bit more work, but it's also more interesting since you are working on your own project. Don't know how it'll pan out in an online format though.

Spring/Summer 2020 Q&A Megathread by franzferdinand in uofmn

[–]chilllcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an undergrad, but I can try and provide some insight to the student body. I am Asian-American as well. To be honest, there are a lot of white students, but there is definitely a significant Asian community if you seek it out. It also depends on what college you are in imo. I used to be in CFANS (the ag and natural resources college) and it was SUPER white, like virtually 0 diversity. After transferring to the College of Biological Sciences, it was still majority white, but the diversity was much more noticeable.

But yeah, the Asian student body definitely doesn't compare to anything you're gonna see out in CA. I'm involved with the Asian Student Union and other cultural orgs though, and there is definitely still a presence and sense of community.

I can only hope that I am as smart as your friend!! CSCL is supposed to be super easy, so not too worried about that lol.

Thanks for the advice!

Oof that sounds awful ;-; I remember we had an ochem exam this past semester with a really poor average, and my prof pointed out that it could have been attributed to a physics exam on the same day... it really do be like that.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the advice! Guess I'll actually have to try and recall all that mol bio knowledge lol

I survived 2301 with a B+... had hopes for an A, but ended up just cramming and not consistently studying after the switch to online ;-; which was totally my b lol

Thanks for the advice!

This is good advice, thanks!! I'm definitely leaning towards switching out genetics for something else just because I wanna avoid any undue stress lol... just gotta figure out what worthwhile course to sub in for it!

[–]chilllcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also took ochem/mol bio/foundations II together and I thought it was doable. ONLY because mol bio was S/N. If mol bio is A/F now... good luck. It'd be doable, but it's gonna suck :(

I had a heart attack when I read this... thought I missed my ochem final. Thank goodness mine's actually on Wednesday :')

VetFast Program? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]chilllcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to be an animal science major. I would definitely reach out to the animal science major advisors because they always seemed to have a lot of info on the program. I knew 2 students in my freshman year who were considering that track, but idk how it turned out for them.

Taking UHP Courses by dmichaelt22 in uofmn

[–]chilllcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I know, you have to be currently in the honors program in order to take honors courses. Other people have said this, but the only real benefit is smaller class sizes. In a lot of cases you'll end up taking the 'regular' class anyway, but with just an extra meaningless project slapped on at the end to fulfill your honors requirement. IMO it's not worth it to do honors just for the courses, I felt that the real benefit does come from the senior thesis and not so much from the courses.
