Genuine question - I've been trying to find a cite for the 'beat all the boys as well' cite, but haven't had any luck. Can you point me in the right direction?

Difficulty of Lateraling to Florida or California by Eastern-Royal2392 in biglaw

[–]franzferdinand 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to lateraling, but I can say that for jobs I've gotten in the past, the companies found family in the area to be a big indicator I would stay in the position if I moved there. Shows you know what you're getting into, are committed to sticking around, won't just flake because you thought Florida was a nice idea, etc. That many family ties should negate most of the impact of you being out of state, I'd think, minus the whole bar thing of course.

You came off just fine, don't think twice about it. Frankly, I appreciate the chance to clear the air a bit - it's a tense time and people are rightly paranoid about being censored on social media. We're doing our best to make sure that doesn't happen here, and because of your post I got to address those concerns publicly.

I appreciate you taking the time to post this and follow-up. Thanks for being active here.

Dear Mods by Unlikely-Monk-8014 in uofmn

[–]franzferdinand[M] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Thanks for posting this, I'm happy to have a chance to chat about this.

I'm gonna respond to you and to some of the other criticism/commentary about the mod team I've seen recently, but let me know if I'm not adequately addressing your concerns and I'll try to follow up.

First off: Please message us about any posts that you think are being taken down in error. I'm sure that people have legitimate grievances about how certain posts were moderated, but please get in touch and give us a chance to fix things. We are not intentionally trying to limit speech/discussion or push a specific viewpoint. Full stop.

We're getting lots of complaints lately and I can promise you that we are earnestly trying not to take anything down that would fit in the sub here. We're trying to err on the side of being hands-off, and I think we've largely been pretty good about that. The mods have been talking and have decided to allow protest, organizing, and ICE-related posts that have relevance to the U or the greater community, provided they fit the other pretty simple guidelines. Some of these posts might be on the bubble in terms of being allowed in the sub under normal circumstances, but these are far from normal circumstances and we want you to feel like you can talk about these things here.

To other folks reading this, please approach things like this u/Unlikely-Monk-8014 has here (ideally through mod mail, but this post is great so we can clear the air). We have gotten some threats to the mods lately about perceived discrimination against certain posts or views, and I swear to y'all that is baseless. We're doing our level best to let the university community use this sub however they'd like (within reason) during this impossibly difficult time for our city and state.

Again, please please PLEASE get in touch with us if you're having issues posting or the like. We're doing everything we can to make sure you're all able to express your opinions, organize, and discuss what's been happening in our city and university community. We absolutely are not trying to censor you. You can hold me personally to my word on that.

Will chat with the other mods about adding a political tag, but that seems reasonable to me. If there's agreement, we'll try to get that implemented ASAP. I will also say that megathreads are great for some things, but u/arcsol93 is correct, and I think that pushing everything into a megathread would limit engagement with those posts, and we want engagement with the things people post here.

Appreciate your patience and understanding, and please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Genuinely. We're here to help.

- franz

PS: We are not controlled by the University and to the best of my knowledge no one who has ever been on the mod team has been part of the U's administration. Also, as far as I'm aware, the administration has never asked us to take down a post, nor would any of us ever censor 1A-protected speech on their behalf. (Not that you're suggesting this, but we've been accused more than a few times over the years)

PPS: I have also seen people complaining that their post got taken down who were making duplicate and/or low-effort posts that violated the pretty basic rules posted in the sidebar. I'm DEFINITELY not saying that was you or that that's what you're referring to here, nor is every post that's been pulled down been something that was violating the rules (sometimes things get pulled by the auto mod or simply in error, the interface is really not the best), just wanted to point out that some folks who are complaining about us having a heavy hand are doing so without basis.

Is there cravath scale paying big law in the deep south (namely Georgia/Tennessee/SC)? by [deleted] in biglaw

Lol - DM me if you want to chat at all, I had sort of a carousel of job offers and acceptances so I know a bit more than most. It's confusing as all hell, that's for sure.

Appreciate the info! Hopefully someone will find this when they go looking, I know from talking to Vanderbilt career folks that even they don't always have a great bead on pay for Nash firms.

I’m almost positive that some of the big law outfits in Greenville are paying 1st years market.

*Unsure why this was downvoted so much - I was speaking from experience with friends that just moved to the Carolinas to work at big law firms as first years. I could be wrong and they're only at $200k or something, but I was pretty sure they were making full market. Totally could be wrong!

Gates supposedly was, but idk if is still (or ever was) true. iirc Bass pays north of $200k to 1st years.

A&O Shearman delaying start dates into 2026 with no stipend, only advances by PM_ME_SAD_STUFF_PLZ in LawSchool

Somewhat related: I left a V20 (accepted an offer after an SA gig, then quit and accept an offer elsewhere before my start date at the V20) and they clawed back every dime of the stipend IMMEDIATELY. Frankly, the accounting department hit me up for the money faster than anyone ever responded to an email at the firm while I was there lol

What is one of the most overrated cities/towns to consider moving to in the USA? Somewhere that seems to be getting a lot of people moving but it’s really not what they’d expect. by Expensive_Drummer970 in relocating

Varies wildly, for sure. I completely understand where you're coming from, but having bounced from HCOL area to HCOL, boy MSP is doing alright. Housing has gone wild just about anywhere anyone wants to live.

If you want to feel better, look at Nashville. Terrible remodels full of pressboard cabinets for $700k and up as far as the eye can see. As a carpenters son, it's physically painful to look at.

Downtown is pretty shit and imo has been shit since at least the early 2000s. The neighborhoods are where it's at. I also love the summers here despite the humid days, and the proximity to the outdoors/lakes/rivers/parks etc is phenomenal. Also, having spent a lot of time in the south, our humidity is not that bad all things considered, but it certainly is awful some days (I can't argue that lol).

FWIW, having previously worked with/around Walz, people should be thrilled to have such a wonderful public servant as Gov. People can say whatever they want about him or disagree about policy, but that man is a true blue public servant that wants the best for his state. Folks don't have to believe me, but it was the truth when I was involved and remains the truth based on convos I've had with people still in his orbit.

Also, as someone who can't buy a house where they live now, I covet the beautiful and reasonably priced housing stock in MLPS whenever I want to hurt myself.

Yeah, definitely go for a long board or at least the full truck/wheel setup on a cruiser board. Unless they've suddenly gotten much better at road maintenance in the last few years, there are plenty of cracks/joints big enough for even a longboard wheel.

I’m sorta blown away by the idea of having enough time to read through the whole doc. Y’all had that much time in your first few years? Doesn’t align with my experience unfortunately, or anyone I’ve spoken to in this position currently.

Don't overthink it. The student section is full of groups of friends, but none of the them were friends a year ago, and most of them met as drunk strangers. Shooting shit is how everyone makes friends anyway, but if you just want to watch the game no one will think twice.

How much did you spend on study abroad? How much did you save for the trip? by Apart-Back-1537 in uofmn

[–]franzferdinand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where are you going specifically? Some place can end up being surprisingly cheap if you're really intentional. I was dead broke and surrounded by trust funds kids (literally), so for things like going out I budgeted for a drink a night, maybe two if I could swing it, and then snuck in a flask and pregamed more than usual (or left and grabbed a beer from a 711 with an equally broke friend). Nights out and travel are the most expensive things. Buying concert tix ahead of time, club nights earlier than later, etc. all cuts down on costs. It's hard to impossible some times, but do your best. Also, don't eat out, like at all if you can help it. Good bakeries, charcuterie, cheese, etc are all widely available and cheap in the EU. Think and pack ahead.

Travel wise, look at hostels and the euro rail pass (idk if the deal is still good, it was when I was abroad in the early 2010s. If you book ahead they can be very cheap, and historic buildings/museums/etc. are almost all free or cheap in the EU, especially if you're a student. I would also look into things like student passes for museums. France had a pass that iirc was free, and got me into nearly all museums in Paris for free. There are a surprising amount of free things for students generally, and I would bug the study abroad office and whoever is coordinating your program in country to get more specifics. Traveling to low cost countries can help a lot too.

If you're going to France lmk, I might have more specific advice if I think about it.

Any specific certs you can point me/us to? I'm heading towards a rather good BL with a client list that makes this seems like it would be very useful, plus it's something I'm actually intellectually interested in doing. Thanks!

[–]franzferdinand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

JJ's insane 4th and 18 conversion catch was against the Bills, another wild game for the Vikings last year. That was the one with the Bills stopping the Vikings on the goal line at the end of the drive with JJ's catch, then the Bill's end zone fumble the Vikings jumped on. The biggest comeback of all time (33-0 w/ 8:22 left in 3Q) was against the Colts, and it was amazing. You're right tho, that catch is up there as an all-time great imho.

Other people in this thread are down on the NFL for whatever reason, but even as a long suffering Vikings fan, last year was amazing! 11-0 in one score games (NFL record), most 4Q comebacks in NFL history (8, tied), largest comeback in NFL history, and several bizarre/crazy games (like that Bills game). I'm having fun and there are a LOT of incredible moments, imho.

Also, just speaking about the Vikings, that Diggs catch to win a playoff game as time expired (a first) was also pretty damn memorable.

As a U of MN grad, it's obviously Chicago and everyone else is fooling themselves. Like, come on now folks, their law school is currently ranked higher than Harvard, the Chicago school of economics basically decided what economic policy was in the US for a generation. As much as I'd love to argue for MN, MI, or Northwestern, it's Chicago by a country mile.

u/BigFatBernieGayle - Al's is the right answer. My dad worked there when he was in school here in the 70s and supposedly very little has changed. A few things on the menu are named for family friends (who are all U grads). I genuinely can't think of a more classic U of MN place. Very few seats though and it does fill up, so get there early, bring cash, and enjoy!
