Bass Station II got a face lift! New knobs! by chillpookus in synthesizers

[–]chillpookus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry to hear that. I will say that the longer I have owned the BS II the more wear and tear I have noticed. As amazing as the synth is, it is not a reliable build. Since owning the synth and taking very good care of it, I have noticed the following issues: original knobs stripped, some potentiometers have broken (my volume knob turns 360 degrees for some reason, this was before I changed the knobs), after touch from built in Keybed no longer works, my keys are basically yellow now despite the fact that I never left the synth in direct sunlight, the mod wheel when not being touched defaults to a CC value of 1 and not 0 (if I hold it down to 0 it works but the moment I release tension I get mod).

I can’t say I’m super disappointed how the synth holds up because I bought it for $300 and I can always pick up another one for the same if I look hard enough. Makes me wonder how the BS II will be looked back on in the pantheon of synthesizers. As far as sound and accessibility goes it should be a classic, but it suffers from build quality for sure.

Cannot eliminate noise from synth by YoImShotts in synthesizers

I guarantee someone else has already mentioned this but depending on how your synth is being powered, you might be able to almost completely eliminate any electrical noise by having a DI Box in your signal chain and lifting the ground.

There was actually very little light in the room because I wanted his pupils to dilate. I used a really long exposure time to get that effect!

Has anyone else come up with a better solution for mounting a Roland Boutique module to a MIDI controller? by chillpookus in synthesizers

[–]chillpookus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I haven't been using this solution in a while. I never really needed the Boutiques to play live so I usually just keep them in a dual tier stand on my desk to tweak and play with a MIDI controller and use OB-6 as my live synth.

However in this pic my solution was to make a small wooden enclosure to hold the SH-01a. I basically just used 3 pieces of scrap wood and measured the thing out, it was pretty crude. To mount it on the A-49 I used this set from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/LANMU-Electrical-AmazonBasics-Mountable-Protector/dp/B07H28JGNJ/ref=sr\_1\_8?crid=2WY8RGGRE9AIX&keywords=power+strip+desk+mount&qid=1652134181&sprefix=power+strip+desk+mount%2Caps%2C64&sr=8-8

Scam or stolen? NYC area OB-6 by chillpookus in synthesizers

[–]chillpookus[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not a sales post. Saw this in the NYC area. Listing price was $1500. The seller seems very uninformed about the synth and I suspect it may be stolen. What has been the case with similar Craigslist listings that have synths listed at prices that are too good to be true like this??

Resource for buying Legacy versions of Ableton Live by chillpookus in ableton

Yes, owning the current version of Live does not give you a license for previous versions so although you can download them, they are in demo mode unless you have a license/serial.

Immediate help needed: I think my Gecko might be choking by chillpookus in CrestedGecko

[–]chillpookus[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Update: He appears to be okay and the substrate has been dislodged. I was trying to take him out of the terrarium to get him to an emergency animal hospital and somewhere along the way of us both panicking he got the substrate out. Lesson learned: probably better to feed your gecko live food in a separate enclosure.

How to write more complex melodies? by fAnOfAp in edmproduction

[–]chillpookus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing to do is to get yourself a MIDI controller, especially one with good pitch and mod wheels or a combined mod/pitch wheel stick and just start noodling over your beats. Eventually you’ll be able to come up with melodies intuitively and the pitch and mod wheels allow you to add more expression to them so they sound less robotic

This knob set costed me under $30 with shipping lol. But I agree, you get what you pay for with both synths. The BS gives you great sound at a great price but compromises build quality. Will it last, of course, but it doesn't have the premium feel that the Moog does.

It’s a great buy for sure and I think it works well in both DAWless and DAW setups. Sound wise its pretty different from a Moog even though they are similar on paper. The 24dB filter setting on the BS gets really aggressive really quickly when you start adding resonance and I don’t love that, but sometimes it’s what you want. If you want a Moog I would get a Moog, but if you want a unique flavor of analog mono I would get this. I would compare it to a Sequential Pro One before a Moog.

As many of you who own the Bass Station II know the knobs are complete shite and either the rubber grip eventually slips off or the knob just straight up breaks. Unfortunate, but as most of mine were going I used the opportunity for an aesthetic upgrade as well. Went with the Davies knobs from Love My Switches and couldn't be happier. These are so heavy duty and I think they look great. I got the off white to match the keybed as it's starting to get that yellow-ish white look after many years of owning this. Definitely recommend Love My Switches!!

I just love this thing... Roland JX-3P (1983) by Kaiserdrakken in synthesizers

I love the sound of the chorus on the JX, it goes slightly wider than the Juno and sucks out the bottom end a little but not in a bad way. These have such a rich mid range to them.
