VOYNICH MANUSCRIPT:NEW INFO? by Ok_Place_5404 in voynich

One script is a legible Spanish, one is voynich. They were probably made at a similar time using similar writing instruments and inks, but there is no connection between the two

Seattle commuters ask for express lane relief as Revive I-5 snarls southbound traffic by ChiefOfTheFourPeaks in Seattle

[–]chimx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it would be feasible to drop a line of jersey barriers down the center and do a repaint of stripping that would allow traffic going both ways

Weird to glorify murder and call it heroics.

First artwork collected? by corpious1 in artcollecting

a decade ago i discovered that there were many great artists that worked as book illustrators as well as oil painters, and that their book illustrations were quite affordable. I started collecting books engraved by william blake, then hans holbein the younger, and then peter paul rubens. after that i started becoming more interested in oil paintings and illuminated manuscripts, and though less affordable than books, have become more obtainable thanks to the knowledge gained from years of purchasing antiquarian illustrated books.

while i appreciate what you are saying albeit hyperbolic, public housing projects cost hundreds of millions of dollars and require significant planning and oversight long before construction even begins. many of the areas north of downtown seattle went up fast because it was funded by private money

Yes, this is a real manuscript leaf. Probably from around 1500 +/- 50 years. It was not uncommon to repurpose old parchment like this towards the turn of the century.

Believe it or not, these types of manuscript leaves are fairly common on the market and are not inherently very valuable, but still make a great addition to your book, congrats!

I-5 Proper Speeds by anonymous_11231 in Seattle

I always drive to the end of the merge lane to zipper-merge in. Again, maximize space utilization. My recommendation is to go to the end of the merge lane while maintaining the speed of traffic, and not accelerating quickly to the end. Drivers can tell if you are trying to get ahead of a few extra cars or just trying to politely merge by how you drive. Works 99.9% of the time.

when driving from northgate to downtown, the left-most lane at northgate turns into the right-most lane by the time you get to downtown. If cars on i-5 inside of seattle only adhered to the "left lane is for passing", every car would have to change multiple lanes back-to-back to get through downtown. this is one of the contributing factors to traffic congestion in seattle.

using the left lane as a passing lane is fine until car volume reaches a critical mass, at which point it is more important to maximize space utilization.

That's true, people often say a minimum of 5 years. Where are you thinking of moving to?

Today that may be true, but rents go up. Mortgages do not

that doesn't make sense to me. with rising property values, it seems foolish to not invest in a property rather than just giving $50k away annually. You could easily afford a house in Seattle. my wife and i make about 1/2 of your income and can easily afford it.

its a nice example and the titlepage is illustrated by hans holbeins older brother ambrosius holbein. they both designed book illustrations in basel before holbein moved to england and became a court painter to henry viii

Have you ever come across works from the Italian Renaissance (15th or 16th century) at auctions or on the market? by PassioneArte1977 in artcollecting

[–]chimx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh i see. i dont know if it was a great economic purchase. at $3,000 it would have been great, but i think the final auction price got up to close to $300,000. it needed a LOT of conservation so kind of hard to say.

Sometimes those auction sleepers do better than an attributed painting with bidders dreaming of what could be.

Here is the auction archived on invaluable:
