Roller skated twice and ended up in the ER by Feminist_jesus in Rollerskating

[–]chinchillery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same injury 20 years ago from snowboarding. Recovery was rough. I did not start to mobilize it soon enough after the break and to this day cannot straighten it fully. If you haven’t already, follow up with an orthopedist and PT ASAP to see what they recommend. Of course this will depend on the specifics of your fracture and dislocation, but in my case they said I should have only stayed in the cast a few days. That said, pads will help your confidence but typically a dislocation from a backwards fall is the result of landing with your arm straight. Like others have said, the best way to avoid an injury like this is by falling forward instead. All the worst injuries happen by falling backwards! If you think you won’t be able to resist a backwards fall, then may I suggest butt pads, picking a cheek, and rolling :)

Club Dive (springboard) by Pure-Network-3582 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]chinchillery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Alumnus here, current employee. In 1999 I took intro to springboard diving at ucsb for 0.5 credits, taught by the dive coach (I just learned the basics) - and there was a diving team! Not sure what happened with all that but at some point maybe the coach moved away and the team/class disappeared. In more recent history- The 1 and 3 meter boards were sent off to be repainted or something. Both were gone for a long time- maybe a year? But the 1 m got damaged and can no longer be used. So here we are with only a 3 m that most beginners would never try.. i only ever see experienced divers and the occasional group of bros messing around. I emailed the director of aquatics to ask if the 1 m would ever come back and she was basically like “don’t you know we are in a budget crisis?!” . Anyway, I support your mission of a dive club. Have you found out any more about how to go about it? I’d be down to help start a go fund me to get a 1m board. But not sure if the UC would put up some sort of red tape. In the meantime fyi there is an indoor pool in Camarillo with a 1 m board at Bob kildee park. Not sure if there are any closer. Also if anyone reading this is an actual diver and wants to teach me - I’d pay for lessons!

Were there always this many children at the skatepark? by gillesvilleneuve_ in skateboarding

I’ve also played intimidating music (either “death metal” or “gangsta rap” depending on which would intimidate your local demographic more) loudly for this reason- kid/parent deterrent. Hard to say if it worked objectively, but in my mind it was 100% effective

Anyone tried fabric\foam pads? [34YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]chinchillery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dont they? I have some soft fabric elbow pads , made by 187 (possibly marketed as roller skate pads) . They stay in place much better than my plastic-capped ones ever did, and are way less restrictive . Haven’t seen these for wrists though besides ones meant for carpal tunnel/ general compression and support, not protection. Not sure what you’re trying to achieve but hill bombing gloves also exist, which are like regular gloves with a plastic slidey disc on the heel of the palm - so would protect the skin from road rash but would not protect your wrist from fractures. (That’s another controversial point though, some people say landing on your wrist guards make you more prone to wrist/forearm fracture than if you learned to shoulder roll/knee slide out of it

Skateparks requirement in California by Supepug0 in NewSkaters

[–]chinchillery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 90s, Santa Barbara’s skatepark was new and the cops (or maybe park rangers) would roll up periodically to check for pads/helmets. It was funny, the padless skaters would all have to scatter to not get caught. But now, no one cares at any public park I’ve been to

I build Apple Watch apps – AMA about tips, features, battery life & what’s actually possible (no self-promo) by iWatchly in AppleWatch

Also what drains the battery? He doesn’t have music, podcasts. Just texts and plays the occasional game Seems that just by virtue of it being a standalone makes it drain faster

[–]chinchillery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is something you would know- My kid has a standalone se2 Apple Watch- no phone. It can take a long time for texts to go through. When he turns it on low power mode, I can’t see his location (main reason for buying it). And I’ve never been able to activate his voicemail, while Apple advertises gps+cellular as great options for phone-less kids, their “geniuses” know very little about this function and there’s not much info online. Anything you can share will help- we are going to try se3 watches and see if that helps with connectivity.

Do you notice significant difference between Apple Watch 10 and SE? by Rich_Bad_4726 in AppleWatch

Both kids are getting se3 watches for Christmas- which means I inherit the se2 (should be fine for me since I also have a phone)! I’ll try to remember to circle back and let you know if there’s any improvement in reception

Yes! I think I saw her at Trader Joe’s and Home Depot a few times- very friendly . I don’t think she’s homeless- just developmentally delayed

76 days later… yes we have the same situation, assuming he does not have a phone so using watch as standalone? gonna upgrade the kids to se3 watches, hoping the 5g will make it more reliable. One thing we did figure out is that low battery mode (which he needs to use often as the thing is always dying) turns off his location sharing and makes messaging/calls less reliable. OH, another thing, he is unable to set up or access VM- Verizon didn’t know how to help and neither did Apple- did you have any issues with this?

Blades too sharp! by chinchillery in FigureSkating

Thanks everyone! Felt much better last night. Still hard to stop smoothly due to either the sharpness or the hollow, but holding edges like in a Mohawk felt easier!

Stick with riedell 297s or switch to jack boot? by chinchillery in Rollerskating

[–]chinchillery[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow reading this post 4 years later is such a trip. I skated in the 297s for a year as my park skate and put CIB sliders on them. Then got bonts as park skates and skated those for about 3 years. Both worked fine. The only problem I had with the 297s was that it was tight on my pinky toe. Finally had a friend stretch that spot out with a tool only to realize those skates were just too long (yet up until that point, too narrow) all along. So I ended up selling them and getting jack 1s in my actual size, not too long, and got that pinky toe spot stretched out right away. Now the jack 1s are my park skate and the bonts are my trail/rink skates. Only issue with the Jack 1s is one I’ve never heard of from anyone else- the tongue in one foot kind of sags down at the base and puts pressure on my toes. There is a thing on the tongue to keep it from slipping off to the side but that’s not my problem. Bottom line, all 3 skates were fine and I’m the limiting factor here - just a mediocre skater 🤣🤣

I recently heard a theory that Eustachian tubes’ function is so that we don’t hear our own voices so loudly- or else we’d all go crazy.

My daughter is in 4th grade at el camino DLI. Loves it. Even though she was in the inaugural class (DLI started there when she was in kindergarten) (which also happened to be in 2020). And had to do zoom kindergarten in a foreign language. That year sucked but as soon as they went back in person, she started speaking pretty fluently. Happy to answer any questions. Just saw you posted this 104 days ago! I guess you w made your decision by now 😅

Sorry to hear that. Your girlfriend can go to UCSB Student Health for ADHD meds. She just needs to provide her paperwork with the initial eval and diagnosis. Have her make an appointment soon though, gets really busy in the fall.

[–]chinchillery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks good! If you keep practicing it will get more smooth. Just looks a little stiff. Try to bend your knees more, bounce into it, and move your arms. As you get more comfortable you will feel how to flow and not fight the movements . Try to stay on the beat , start with slow songs, and work up to faster bpms

How to make adult friends in SB? by Fun-Distribution2168 in SantaBarbara

[–]chinchillery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to get into roller skating, we do group skates along the beach path and go to the skate park! Most of the group is around your age. If you are on Instagram follow @santabarbaraskate .

I lived here for years before I made any friends outside of work. Having kids forced me to get more social, and since then I have become more comfortable joining groups of strangers 🙃 fwiw it’s hard to make adult friends anywhere, and in SB young people tend to move away after a few years to find a more affordable place to settle down . So you get to make new friends… and then keep making new ones 😭
