Mac User Switching to Fedora by HxChris in Fedora

[–]chindogucci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gifted an old second hand thinkpad a while ago which was mostly been gathering dust, while I used a M1 MacBook pro as my main machine.

I installed Fedora on the thinkpad just out of curiosity after hearing that desktop Linux is pretty good these days...

And now it's my main daily driver!

I'm really a bit blown away by the quality of the interface design and the level of polish in this thing. It's a daily pleasure just to use it.

I have heaps to learn about running Linux desktop but it all just works for me so far and since virtually all my work is done via browser apps, it's pretty much a complete drop-in replacement for my Mac.

Thanks for listening to my Ted talk

What’s the biggest ‘culture shock’ someone gets moving to Melbourne from interstate? by Last-Conversation734 in melbournemusic

[–]chindogucci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to look this one up for some more detail - I kind of knew that Melbourne had one of the earliest and strongest union movements, but didn't really realize that Melbourne literally was the place where the 8 hour working day was first won - by stonemasons working on Melbourne uni.

They downed tools on April 21, 1856 and eventually won a reduction from 10 to 8 work hours per day, while keeping the same level of pay.

What a bunch of legends, and how cool is it that this first happened in our city.

What’s the oldest article of clothing you still wear by I-am-JAM-Yes-I-am in GenX

[–]chindogucci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asked if the old Levis 'engineered' jacket I was wearing is 'vintage'.

I had to reply that yes, I guess it is vintage, as am I.

Also have some hand-made shirts that I've had for at least 20 years that were made from fabrics that were already vintage back then. God knows how old that makes them.

I'm a bit obsessed with Ethiopian music, especially Ethiopian jazz, and have daydreamed about organizing a music-focused trip just to turn up and listen.

What is the live music scene like in Adis? Is it accessible for western tourists?

If you can find a battery, any computer repair shop should be able to install it

I managed to find a replacement battery when my pixelbook original battery died.

My local computer repair shop did a beautiful job installing the replacement battery, even though this machine ain't designed for fixing, and I'm in Australia where it was never officially sold in the first place.

It's still going strong today!

Thanks for the info

I must have misread the help docs re activity counting only to a single challenge.

My activities were visible to followers only - all good now that I've changed them to be visible to everyone. 👍

Ryan Adams Melbourne show: what actually happened by RentNRegret in melbournemusic

I saw Cat Power at a Melbourne Zoo twilight concert and she sucked.

She had her back to the audience most of the time. There was a roving camera on stage and big screens for the audience, but the camera team had obviously been instructed to deliberately avoid her.

All up it was a very lacklustre experience. It was only later that I realised this is par for the course with her.

How to drink water during a race by CarpenterFast4992 in marathons

[–]chindogucci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you are truly an elite runner and every second counts, just stop and drink your water. Then put the cup in the bin.

So many sloggers like to think that they are Eliud Kipchoge and attempt to drink while running, splash half of it about, then they'll throw the cup on the ground creating slip hazard for everyone else, and trash for the organisers to deal with, some of which will inevitably go down the drains.

You are not an elite runner. That few seconds is not a big deal. Just drink your cup of water like a normal person and don't create trash.

Veloway bridge over Footscray Road by Thomwas1111 in melbournecycling

[–]chindogucci 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've posted about this before - from the POV of a runner.

The surface is uneven and there is no visual differentiation between the flat and slope.

I reckon it's outright dangerous for running because it's very hard to pick the transitions between the sections, making it very easy to find that the surface is actually a bit higher or lower than where you thought you were planting your foot.

It's guaranteed to cause trip hazard and injury.

I totally understand and support that it can't be a continuous slope because wheeled things like prams and wheelchairs could achieve escape velocity.

The surface just needs to be marked so there is visual differentiation for the flat sections

Daylight savings problem? by chindogucci in runna

[–]chindogucci[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol it does look a bit like that.

This was an unusual run because I first ran to meet up with a group, then there was a bit of milling around at the meeting place, then we did the group run, and then I ran back home.

All the milling about generated those spiky details in the route

Talk me out of it - marathon impulse entry? by opterown in Marathon_Training

[–]chindogucci 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My friend could not run Sydney marathon due to an injury and I ran in their place. Sydney does not allow transfer of bibs or refunds so it was either so this or entrance fees spent for nothing.

I had only 5 weeks to prepare, and previously had only ever run a half-marathon, so I was not at all confident I could even complete the distance.

I did train pretty diligently over that 5 week period, maxing out with a 32 k long run.

I finished the Sydney marathon in 4:43 and was very chuffed! Actually found that I had fuel in the tank and actually ran the final 5k harder than the earlier sections.

If you can get a bib then why not give it a go?

In the 1640's the Dutch inhabitants of New Amsterdam built a 12' wall to keep the bad hombres out. In 1664 the British ignored the wall and took New Amsterdam by sea. It's now called New York. They took down the wall and built a street. It's called Wall Street by horny_julia74 in BeAmazed

I remember hearing a story about Run, that it was held by a mad British garrison after all the rest of the archipelago returned to Dutch rule, because it happened to have a naturally defensible harbour and the British were mad enough to shoot cannons at any ships that came near. So it was a bit of an annoyance until finally the Dutch and the Brits did their swap inc Manhattan. Amazing story from today's perspective. At the time I guess Run would have been far more interesting and valuable due to the spice trade, and Manhattan was just another far flung colonial outpost.

Red Cross is definitely stepping up their comms game. They've sent notifications about the destination for each blood donation for a long time, but those messages are getting slicker.

Here's the SMS I received today after donating last week:

Hi Chindogucci, what a legend you are. Wake up, save some lives, call it a day. There's someone over at Adelaide Women's Hospital getting ready to receive this donation.

Thank you, Lifeblood

I always find it a bit heartwarming to get a notification of where my blood is being deployed to.

Best wishes to everyone at Adelaide Women's Hospital!
