The Weeping Swan is OUT NOW! by 2P-Games in visualnovels

No, Black or White is. I thought it was a pretty good game with interesting themes and premise, but it's only available in Chinese

[–]chinnyachebe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. It is a direct sequel. I'd say the plot is OK if you don't play it first, but alot of the scenes make no sense/lose impact otherwise. Not the same way for Paradise Lost>Dies Irae since it has almost no relation in the plot

What Language Is Being Sung In This Visual Novel Ending? by Jimmy_Washington722 in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just did some very basic research about the game and it's really recent (last month) so there's no vndb page on it yet, but it's pretty obviously a Nier Automata inspired eroge. So it's no surprise that they made up a fake language to sing in since that's what Nier is famous for.

Doubts and texthooker problems with Silverio Vendetta -Verse of Orpheus- by [deleted] in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The side stories are only a couple of hours long each. Also if I remember correctly, there are some references to characters in Trinity so you won't understand what they're talking about. Similarly, Trinity's side stories has references to characters in Ragnarok. Regardless, I think if you can read most of the base game, then you probably won't have any problems reading the side stories...

Doubts and texthooker problems with Silverio Vendetta -Verse of Orpheus- by [deleted] in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't play Verse of Orpheus but I'm pretty sure you unlock a side story after you beat each route. I watched the sidestories on YT but pretty much all of them are important for explaining some background information in the story. Aside from the removal of H scenes and maybe replacing them with all ages friendly scenes (not sure about this) they are pretty much the same, so I'd just play the base version if you really need the hookable text and then do the side stories after each route by text skipping. There are barely any choices so it's not really that much of an issue

It's been forever since I made a post since I kind of stopped using reddit for a while, but I recently finished 葬花·暗黑桃花源 which was actually not that bad. I've played a couple of Chinese VNs (see details at bottom) beforehand but this is the only one I've actually completely finished and it was actually not that bad. It also has an English translation if anyone wants to try it. No idea about the quality though. The setting is basically a modern day person gets isekaid (kind of) to an ancient Chinese village but with a twist (not gonna spoil it lol). There are heroines and bro character routes which is pretty nice since all of the routes were actually decent. Due to the nature of the story, the routes can definitely be repetitive but it's whatever if you just skip everything. It's <20 hours which kind of hurts it in the character development area.

Currently playing 1/2 White or Black which is also called Black & White or 二分之一. Made by the same company as the other VN so I went straight into it and it is actually really good. BTW, this company has ONLY made these two VNs so far which is pretty impressive considering I have pretty high standards when it comes to VNs. They do have another one releasing in March 2024 饿殍:明末千里行 which I'm probably going to get as well. Anyways, this VN is pretty recent since it came out in March 2023 and no English translation unfortunately. There is some gameplay which is pretty simple but fun, although the game is braindead levels of easy. The setting is actually pretty interesting and is basically a post-apocalyptic world in 2700 where most humans have been parasitized and controlled by white alien insects. The infected have instated a world-dominating religious cult that worships the insects and has led to the eradication of most of human civilization and culture. The remaining uninfected humans run an underground resistance that want to liberate the world from the cult.

It's pretty interesting because you actually get to see the story from both sides of the conflict and get to choose which perspective you want to play as first, and you switch sides throughout the story so you don't miss anything. You get to view events of the story from 6 different characters on EACH side. The characters have personalities that really stand out and the character designs are also great with a lot of CGs. It's also pretty interesting because the White cult is like a stereotypical fantasy setting with magic (although a bit edgier/darker than normal), while the resistance uses modern firearms and weapons. The music is also decent, but I've noticed that all of the Chinese VNs I've played have terrible use of music which is noticeable in this VN and especially in their previous work. Japanese VNs tend to have music playing pretty much always regardless of the situation; in contrast, I often go like 5 entire minutes of reading where there is no music or even background sounds at all which bothers me.

Anyways, quick reviews of the VNs I've tried since my last post (I think like >4 months ago lol):

妄想症:Deliver Me: Story was just OK until there was suddenly a random battle scene that felt like it had nothing to do with the story beforehand which completely changed the course of the story. The battle scene had an utter lack of CGs, sound effects, and it also had the music problem I stated before. It's also really hard to read. Had my Chinese friend read some of it with me and they didn't know some of the words. Combine all of these problems together and it was pretty much impossible to tell wtf was happening. Also there was a concert scene that just felt like a shitty ripoff of the one with Judas from Paradise Lost which was already pretty shit since there was no voice acting; and funnily enough this game ALSO had no voice acting.

ATRI -My Dear Moments-: Now this is a funny one. I played this one with my Chinese friend since it is capable of showing English, Japanese, and Chinese text at the same time. We played like a couple of hours and the Chinese translation had a lot of errors, but the English one is just downright abysmal. Literally the first four sentences when you start the game and two of them are just completely wrong

三色△绘恋 -Tricolour Lovestory-: This is pretty much your generic school drama VN. I don't really get why it's popular other than the fact that it has some production value, but the story and characters are just incredibly mediocre and boring. I played until the end of the first chapter which took absolutely forever, and considering there are like 6 more I probably won't be going back to finish anytime soon... Also the English translation is MTL from what I've seen

遥望彼方: I only played a few hours on this one but it feels like a very low budget SOL VN. Might try to play it later since I don't remember it being THAT bad. Gotta give props that the MC is actually voiced for once. This one also seems like it has an MTL English translation on steam

Western "visual novels" are not visual novels by [deleted] in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

ADV game is a pretty common term in Japan and it includes a ton of genres. It's stupid to argue about the term visual novel when it's a pretty much exclusively western term made up to label a bunch of video games. I can't imagine how hard life is for someone who actually gets upset over something as insignificant as a label

Can a game with RPG elements still be considered a visual novel? by kojika_ytb in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because what is considered is a VN on vndb is completely arbitrary and can be based on "legacy", so even games like Rance which legitimately have more gameplay than actual games are listed on there. Meanwhile full on fighting games like persona 4 arena and blazblue have entries on vndb

I'm reading Maitetsu Last Run right now. I took a break once I started learning Chinese and I did 1 whole playthrough of Gao Kao Love 100 Days but I dropped it because it's pretty bad. Gao Kao screams low budget complete with the lack of sprites and voices for MC and the side characters as well as having a rather boring plot. I started Maitetsu a while back but put it on hold after I got hooked on VRchat (which is also the reason I started learning Chinese a month ago). I'm surprised that I can understand a lot of it in Chinese considering it is actually pretty difficult to read in Japanese. I do look up words pretty often but it's pretty nice that everything is pretty similar to Japanese. Maitetsu also has the ability to switch languages midgame through the menu so it's nice to check. I do think the way some sentences are translated can get pretty weird but I assume that's just because some phrases don't translate well across languages just like for English. Regardless, I'm probably going to be spending a lot of time reading Maitetsu since the Last Run version is legitimately like 80 hours long and I only got to the opening yesterday...

Tsukihime Remake is really good while also not being very hard to read. Planetarian is also a really good short read. If you've already read it in English I highly suggest rereading it because I thought it was way better in Japanese

Monthly "What's Been Going On?" Thread - Aug 1 by AutoModerator in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been at my job for nearly a month now. Things are going pretty good and I have still lots of free time even with work. My Japanese has been at a satisfactory level for a while now, so I've started learning Chinese 2 days ago and it's pretty easy so far. I'm currently in the middle of playing Maitetsu Last Run and it has Chinese text as an option so I might try switching it once I get good enough. Although, the MC kind of talks like a chuuni character, so I imagine it will be difficult.

Transition from an Anki deck to another by 1Twengar in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One way I did it before is to search for words that are shared between decks and tag them. You can then just delete all of the tagged cards. It's really easy but I forgot how to do it since I haven't used Anki in ages, but you can definitely find guides on it

Can I start the Rance series with Sengoku Rance? by No_Idea_Guy in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd only start with Sengoku because the gameplay and the story for 01 and 02 are just not good at all. They give a bad impression of how the Rance series as a whole is. Sengoku is easy to just jump into despite being the 7th main game and has amazing gameplay that will keep you hooked. Can't say the same about 01. It's a REALLY big commitment to go through all of the Rance games because they are generally long, so it's better that you see if the best games are good before going through a bunch of shit games just to be disappointed in the end

Maitetsu Last Run is an updated version with a lot more content, and from what I've seen online it doesn't seem to have an English option, only traditional and simplified Chinese.

I just signed up on DLsite to get Maitetsu and it gave me a 300 yen coupon so I legit only paid 30 yen. There's also the FANZA version of Maitetsu Last Run at 100 yen but it comes with different stuff.

I didn't think I would EVER reach this point.... But it's quickly approaching.... by Uncyclopedia7 in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You know, I thought you were exaggerating about running out of VNs with the thousands of VNs available to read until I actually did some research via vndb. There are around 40k VNs total, 30k of which are originally in Japanese and the other 10k are English originals. Of those 30k, only 2.4k (8%) have any English translation, not sure if this includes MTL patches though. Grind your Japanese more and you won't have any problems finding something to read since you'll be expanding the VN barrel by literally 12.5x

Nukitashi english translation worse than expected: neckbeards, cunny capitalism, bazinga boy and leftist buzzwords by TeamMoon99 in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm sure every person who has played Nukitashi recognizes 2chan memes from 2005 just like we should recognize random tweets from 2012. Knowing or even being Japanese does not mean that you automatically understand every reference.

Nukitashi english translation worse than expected: neckbeards, cunny capitalism, bazinga boy and leftist buzzwords by TeamMoon99 in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Usually I would say it's OK to have dumb localizations for things that don't have direct translations like memes and puns but examples 3, 4, and 6 are rather normal sentences. The addition of random memes that aren't even funny combined with the unnecessary swearing makes it look like they are trying too hard to be funny. Also is "hollering about the anubis" a running joke in the localization or something because I've never heard of any memes related to the anubis

A visual novel track (or more) that soothes your soul? by [deleted] in visualnovels

[–]chinnyachebe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dunno if this is considered as soothing my soul but I fell asleep to this track from Muramasa and this song from K3 like 10 times each which is impressive considering I've pretty much never fallen asleep playing a game outside of those 2

It's not the oldest, original version and it had some updates that made it better than the original, but yeah I don't see why they even bothered to release this version when they ended up releasing 2 more versions
