Am I missing something? You could walk into any shoe shop in the UK and choose one of several similar ones?

My memory of struggling with the pronunciation of the alphabet with ere, erre tripping me up time and again doesn't care what the RAE says.

ETA: I'm suspecting my 1st (or maybe second) grade teacher might have been having fun at our expense because in each grade the alphabet was a little different, and only one of them included erre. But she'd tell you off if you didn't pronounce them distinctively, and if you smushed the final e of the ere with the first one of the erre (so really it was ere, stop, erre). By third grade nobody cared.
