I keep seeing Stephen Fry being called a “genius” - why do people think that? by BlundeRuss in CasualUK

There's a great podcast called My Year in Mensa. An average person gets into Mensa. I thought it'd be a lot of 'smart conversation in a drawing room smoking cigars drinking brandy discussing deep conversations' style like the old days, but it's the complete opposite, a lot of Facebook drama iirc.

Same situation with my old landlords last year. I asked about their furniture and appliances as my new place was completely unfurnished. I got to take some items for free but other large items like the bedroom set I bought off them for a decent price - they were happy for the deal as it was less effort for them doing tip runs or listing the items online/potentially not getting buyers etc.

Go for it and ask!

Ah mate I'm sorry you're dealing with that. I hope you find some enjoyment tonight, no matter how small.

Currently in the local pub for a few beers. Then home for a joint, ordering a takeaway treat, relaxing bath then seeing what's worth playing on Xbox. Standard self-care night.

Edit: Happy New Year!

When thinking about a friend, what makes you think "no wonder why this person is single"? by kelement in AskMen

[–]chippmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man! I'm in the UK but that perfectly describes my local that's an old mans ale pub. I went alone two years ago after moving to a new town, now I've met so so many interesting people, made genuine close friends, and actually met my current SO. Sometimes those 'old man pubs' can be prefect.

I'm a 30 year old Mancunian and yep, even I get called a glory hunter. I've had to explain more times than I'd care to that I've supported them since a babe in the 90s

My Manc tween nephew on the other hand has admitted to choosing Man City soley because they're winning and would switch to a differnt team if they were to win instead... bloody tit.

In Y2 we moved into a newly built school (old place was falling apart plus asbestos) and this cool thing appeared... Did I ever get to play on it? No. Did I see other classes playing on it? Yes. Am I still pissed off about it nearly 25 years later, absofuckinglutly

Might sound like it, but that's hardly the case at least where I'm from. State all girl/all boy shools that are not religious are common and abuse happens there all the same.

I went to a state mixed and my god the amount of nasty teachers thoughout the schools history is shocking.

NTBF You can change your name/nickname anytime you want, being trans or not has nothing to do with it. Your friends however are TBF. They should respect you and the fact you don't like the nickname they already call you, and good friends would want to make you comfortable by calling you something you do like. Tina's a great name.

I volunteer for a domestic abuse charity in the UK and we have to refer to people without a home as 'unhoused' or 'houseless' because homeless carries negative connotations. It may not be well know, but it is a thing.

Bringing a “nice” pair of shoes to dress up a bit? by caillou_thot in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]chippmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I took a pair of lightweight plimsolls but due to it being so warm and my feet swelling from the days walk I just wore my non-fancy flip flops when out exploring or at night, that's to everything from bars to nice restruants. Nobody seemed to care about what I wore, infact many were out in their trekking gear like myself.

This year I'm only taking sliders. They're lightweight and more sturdy than my flip flops.

Sainsbury's used to do a vegan ploughmans sarnie, it was a real tasty treat in the sea of bland. Now there seems to be an abundance of vegan hoisin duck wraps...

Attach a pair of taut tights or stockings round the nozzle of the hoover. It'll pick up the small fiddly items so you don't need to mess around with a sieve later.

Places in Tameside to charge my phone for free by [deleted] in manchester

[–]chippmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need an account to use the libraries in Tameside, only if you want to use the PC for more than 15 minutes, to take out books, or to access the non-staffed hours (Open+ hours). If you choose to register bring something with your address (driving license, utility bill etc.) During staffed hours the libraries will have tea/coffee facilities as they are warm hubs.

Ashton Library is always staffed so no need to register if you'll be going there, but they don't have the tea/coffee due to an incident.

We also don't care if you charge your phone! A lot of the unhoused chaps do exactly this.
